Maintenance Challenges
• Lots of electronics• Lots of antenna connections (corrosion)• Aging vehicles• But, there are really no single-point failure modes (baring some cataclysmic event) that would cause an extended down time: Multiple systems with multiple transmitters, receivers, computers, but final transmitter tubes now run about $80,000
11/20/2003 2003 November NSF Panel Review of Jicamarca Challenges: 4
Budget Challenges• Additional operational costs for new instruments
• JULIA – cost was not previously included in the main budget• SOUSY – fuel expected to be $8K/yr for 500 hours of operation• Bistatic – Equipment funded separately; routine operational costs • Operating with 4 big transmitters – increases peak demand billing
• Replacement of aging vehicles• Need a new one approximately every 2 years
• Replacement of any failure of transmitter tubes • $15K for drivers (expected lifetime is 15K hours: 2 at 13K hr, 1 at 3K hr)• $80K for finals (expected lifetime is 15K hours: 2 at 13K hr, 1 at 3K hr)• $40K for SOUSY finals
