A liquid, gas, or solid that exhibitsexplosive flammable characteristics suchas LPG, butane, gunpowder, paint storage, fuel, oil, etc.

Tyco Fire & Building Products is a leadingmanufacturer and distributor of water-based firesuppression systems and components for special hazardrisks, offering one of the broadest lines of fireprotection system equipment worldwide for SpecialHazard Systems to meet your needs.

Our complete line of standard sprinklers have afantastic record of performance, consistency, anddependability. However, many plants and buildingscontain fire hazards that standard automatic sprinklerscannot control or extinguish. These are termed"Special Hazards". In general, a special hazard is anarea, process, piece of equipment, or building that anormal sprinkler system will not effectively protect.

Generally the following “Special Hazards” fall under these criteria:

Special Hazards systems are sometimes foundwithin plants or areas that are protected bytraditional sprinkler systems. With the advent ofnew and different synthetics, sophisticated paintlines, flammable liquid handling, and criticalprocess equipment, the risk of serious fire scenarioslooms greater and greater. These circumstancesdictate the need for Special Hazards protection. Acompany should never assume that they do nothave a high hazard that requires additional specialhazards protection.

Tyco Fire & Building Products is availableworldwide under the leading brand names:CENTRAL®, GEM®, STAR™, and GRINNELL®.

Single interlock preaction systems are used toprotect areas where there is danger of serious waterdamage that might result from damaged automaticsprinklers or piping. Typically, such areas includecomputer rooms, storage areas for valuableartifacts, libraries and archives. Also, preactionsystems are effectively used to protect propertieswhere a prealarm of a possible fire condition mayallow time for fire extinguishment by alternatesuppression means, prior to a sprinkler discharge. In the event the fire cannot otherwise beextinguished, the preaction sprinkler system willthen perform as the primary fire protection system.

Single interlock preaction systems employautomatic sprinklers attached to a piping systemcontaining 10 psi (0,7 bar) supervisory pressure, with a supplemental electric fire detection systeminstalled in the same area as the sprinklers.Preaction systems with 10 psi (0,7 bar) supervisorypressure may also be activated by either wet or drypilot sprinklers instead of electric detectors.Actuation of the fire detection system from a fireopens the deluge valve, allowing water to flow intothe sprinkler piping system and to be discharged

only from those sprinklers that have been operatedby heat over the fire. Loss of supervisory pressurefrom the system piping as a result of damagedsprinklers or broken piping will activate a troublealarm to indicate impairment of the system. Thedeluge valve will not open due to loss ofsupervisory pressure.

Double interlock preaction systems are designedfor applications such as refrigerated areas that requirethe maximum degree of protection against aninadvertent operation that could result inunnecessary flooding of the sprinkler system piping.

The double interlock system consists of a delugevalve and swing check valve with releasing trimfeaturing both a solenoid valve and a dry pilotactuator in a series configuration. The swing checkvalve isolates the body of the deluge valve from thesystem air or nitrogen pressure that holds the drypilot actuator closed. The solenoid valve remainsclosed until it is electrically energized by a delugereleasing panel that responds to the operation of afire detection device.

In order to actuate the double interlock preactionsystem, two independent events, caused by a firecondition, must occur. The sprinkler system pipingmust lose air or nitrogen pressure due to theoperation of one or more sprinklers, and the delugereleasing panel must energize and open thesolenoid valve upon the operation of a firedetection device.

The double interlock system will operate onlywhen both the dry pilot actuator and the solenoidvalve are open at the same time. Opening of thedry pilot actuator only (for example: a forklifttruck accidentally dislodges a sprinkler) or of thesolenoid valve only (for example: accidentaloperation of an electric manual pull station) willcause an alarm, and will not trip the system orflood the sprinkler system piping.

The “deluge valve” is the automatic water controlvalve that is used to control water flow into deluge, preaction, and special types of fire protection systems inresponse to a fire.

Deluge fire protection systems are normally used inspecial hazard installations where an entire areaapplication of water is required for protection. Typicalapplications may include flammable liquid handlingand storage areas, aircraft hangars, and other high-hazard installations where water is the most effectiveextinguishing agent. Deluge systems employ opensprinklers or spray nozzles attached to a piping system. The system is connected to a water supply through thedeluge valve. This valve is opened by the operation of afire detection system installed in the same areas as theopen sprinklers or nozzles. Deluge systems may beactivated by wet or dry pilot sprinklers, or electricdetectors. When the deluge valve opens, water flowsinto the piping system and discharges from all opensprinklers and nozzles.

AQUAMIST® Systems utilize the newest and mostunique nozzles developed and approved for fire protection. They offer an alternative to gas systems, foam systems, orheavy density sprinkler systems. By utilizing a higherpressure than a normal sprinkler system, but a 50-80%lower water flow, the AquaMist Systems use less watermore effectively, reduce costs in pipe sizing and labor, andminimize cleanup and water damage.

a) By using smaller droplet sizes, a larger droplet surface area tovolume is created. This larger surface area allows heatextraction (evaporation).

b) Vapor is created that displaces, removes, and excludes oxygenfrom the fire tetrahedral equation.

c) Flammable vapors are diluted by the entrainment of watervapor, to the extent that the flammable vapor will not burn.

d) Larger droplets are designed to penetrate the fire plume andcool the combustibles similar to a standard sprinkler system.

e) The suspended mist will cool and “pre-wet” othercombustibles in the area and cool any fuels and gases.

AquaMist Systems are used in total compartmentalized areas andare pre-engineered systems that have specific guidelines as to theavailability of installation, design, and components. With theadvent of the publication of NFPA 750, the introduction andawareness of mist technology has never been higher. These pageshighlight some of the products available in the AquaMist productline from TFBP…the innovative leader in fire protection.
