From The Pastors Desk
Now I want to tell you about a man named Charlie
Shacochis. You see Charlie was an active member of the
parish and a member of the the Knights of Columbus.
Charlie saw a need for this new organ and decided he
would lead the charge to raise funds to buy it. Charlie came
up with the idea to collect our spare change. He built
simple tri-pods, attached buckets and week after week
Charlie and his Bucket Brigade would be out collecting
spare change after Mass.
It would take Charlie quite a while to reach his goal but he
finally did it! Today, as a result of the determination of one
man (and the help of the Knights of Columbus) ; we have a
beautiful organ in the Serra Center.
Now, when you drop your spare Change in the buckets
for our Sports Court/Parking Lot, think of Charlie and think
of the power we have when our entire Community comes
together to rebuild our Church!
Charlies BucketsArticle by Lee Bickford
So you may be asking Why is the
parish using those cheap buckets to
collect spare change for the SportsCourt/ parking lot? Well, let me tell you
the story of these white buckets that we
have come to call Charlies Buckets
Years ago when we had finished
building the Serra Center we had a huge need for better
music in our Liturgy. A fine organ was just what we needed
to enhance our Spirit at Mass. But this was an expensive
wish; it would cost in the area of $65,000. How could we
come up with that kind of money?
Sports Court News!
Dear Members of our Parish Family,
Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice.
wrote the celebrated American poet Robert Frost. From
what Ive tasted of desire I hold with those for fire. The
apocalypse, or the end times has been a source of
constant meditation, reflection and concern for people of
every generation, including our own. War, natural disaster, civil unrest, and economic disaster in one part of the world
or another are the staple of our daily news. We have lived
in the threatening shadow of nuclear war for so long now
we no longer give it a second thought.
On the more immediate and personal level, people we
know and loveand sometimes we ourselves-- have had to
confront personal apocalypse in the form of death, life-
threatening illnesses, loss of work, home and family
stability. When we lose someone we love, it certainly
feelsat least for a timethat our world has ended.
Jesus speaks directly to this experience in this weekends
Gospel from Luke (21:5-19). He predicts the imminentdestruction of the city of Jerusalem, which actually took
place in 70 AD-- nearly four decades after his death and
Resurrection. This political and social chaos would be
accompanied by a period of virulent persecution of His own
followers as well. Yet, while He is prophesying a scene of
almost unthinkable destruction, Jesus is at the same time
offering tremendous hope: . not a hair on your head will
be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure yourlives.
It is this unfathomable hopea deep-seated and radical
confidence in Gods presence, care, and faithfulnessthat
has both propelled and sustained Christians in the faith for
over two millennia. And it continues to inform and
encourage us in our own time. Even in the midst of disaster
and disasterwhether personal or global-- we are
sustained by the promise of Gods presence and healing
care. That reassurance, of course, by no means lets us off
the hook. We are at the same time reminded to work
participate actively in Gods healing through our own
actions and commitment. . .
In just two short weeks, we will be celebrating the first
Sunday of Advent, the beginning of our liturgical year.
Christmas will definitely be here before we know it. Bishop
Robert Brom will be with us to inaugurate this holy seasonas well as the start of a Year of Prayer both at the Mission
and Parish. He will lead a service of solemn Vespers on
Saturday, November 27, in the Old Mission Church, at 4
pm. All are welcome.
Also, this year we are working to prepare ourselves spiri-
tually to receive Christ more deeply in our hearts through a
parish-wide Mission. Our own Father Larry Dolan, ofm,
Guardian of our Franciscan fraternity here at Mission San
Luis Rey, will be leading the English-language component
of the Mission, starting with preaching at all the English
Masses on the weekend of December 4-5 and continuing
with nightly sessions in the Parish Chapel December 6, 7,and 8 (7-9 pm each night).
The Spanish-language component of our Parish Mission
will be lead by Frs. Andres Rivero, Luis Guzman, and my-
self, with presentations on December 9, 10, and 11
leading up to celebrations of the Feast of Our Lady of Gua-
dalupe on December 12. These sessions, as well, will be
held in the Parish Chapel. Please check the bulletin for
complete details.
All are welcome to take the opportunity to participate in
this time of personal reflection, preparation, and spiritual
renewal.
Peace and all good,
Fr. Chuck

PARISH IMPROVEMENTS
Over the past months we have seen many significant
improvements to our parish campus. I encounter visitors
every day and every one of them always comments on the
beauty of our facility. We are now embarking on a project
that again will have a major impact on our physical plant. The Our Lady of Guadalupe Sport Court will not only give
ALL of our parishioners a place to play and exercise, it will
also provide puddle free parking for the first time in our
history. I have heard some parishioners say oh its just a
parking lot or oh it will be a nice place for the kids to play,
however, this project is more than either of these comments
give it credit for.
You all know by now that it is a major investment (the
budget is $330,000) but it is also a major improvement. I
urge you to think of this level of improvement as one worthy
of a significant contribution. We started off with doing
rummage sales, talent shows and the like and raised enough
to get started on the project. It is now time to recognize thevalue that this project brings and make a decision to
contribute significantly to its success. Allen Hartman.
THANK YOU AL MAYEN
Al Mayen has decided to retire again, but this time it is
from a church ministry head position. Often you do not see
Al present at Mass but he is there in the AV room bringing
an electronic form of life to our celebration. He has been
doing this for over ten years, through operators forgetting to
show up, computer crashes, and sound system failures he
(and his team) has persevered. Again thank you Al for yourmany weekends of service, you will be missed.
We welcome Jackie Bickford, who has volunteered to take
her years of service as an AV operator to the next level and
lead this important ministry. Jackie can use your help. If you
are interested in becoming an AV operator or just think that
you might be interested, please give Jackie a call or sign up
on the volunteer sheets in the AV room. A general training
and retraining session is being planned so there is no better
time to get involved. Allen Hartman.

BOOK OF THE WEEK:
With a Listening HeartBiblical & Spiritual Reflections on the Psalms
by Fr. Bertrand Buby, SM
The Book of Psalms is a collection of ancient poetic songs
whose beauty and meaning are often obscured by language,
culture and the time in which they were written.
Biblical scholars have done much of the work for us and we
find their conclusions set forth in this remarkably brief and
highly readable book. As the title indicates, we need an open
heart and an attentive ear in order to enter into the spirit
and meaning of these great prayers of the Hebrew and
Christian faith. The author has painstakingly taken each of
the 150 psalms in order and succinctly pointed out what to
look for if we are to cull the maximum benefit from them.
With this book in one hand and the psalms in the other, the
reader will reap the abundant rewards reserved for those
who have a listening heart.

Estimados Miembros de la Familia Parroquial,
Paz y Todo Bien!
Padre Charles (Chuck) Talley, ofm
MEJORAS PARROQUIALES
Durante los meses pasados hemos estado
viendo muchas mejoras significativas de nuestros
alrededores.
Yo he escuchado a algunos

truir nuestra Iglesia!

Friends of Koi care for the Koi and turtles in the parish pond by the
chapel. This pond was built in 1955 by the Sisters of Precious Blood, and
several of the fish in the pond are more than 55 years old.
Our volunteers fall into three groups: Koi Keepers, Gardeners and Fund-
raisers. Koi Keepers ensure that Fish and turtles are fed once a day, the
water is kept clean and clear and the filtration and skimmers are looked todaily. That means every day, 365 days a year, a pond keeper is spending a
half hour or more caring for the pond and fish. All Koi Keepers receive spe-
cialized training about how to care for Koi.
Our Garden volunteers thin, rake and prune the plants in and around
the pond and waterfall because they are part of the eco-system that sup-
ports our healthy fish. Fundraising Volunteers help us run food sales to
pay for the food, chemicals, equipment and expertise that support the
pond.We need your help! Please call Karen Willson at 760-547-0701 to
volunteer or donate to help support our parish pond.
