Dear reader, Welcome to the second Student Board Newsletter of 2011. The year is almost over, but some things are still to happen on our side before we welcome 2012. In this newsletter we‟re sharing the latest news, with a focus on the main projects we are working on and other things that are happening in the CEMS Alliance which are relevant to us students. The last week of September we held our second meeting of the year. It took place in Milan, and was kindly hosted by Bocconi University and Corporate Partners Vodafone, Reckitt Benckiser and Beiersdorf. Many topics were discussed, and a lot of work was done to wrap up ending projects and plan new ones. Among the main happenings of the meeting is the formation of a new, fifth work group in the Student Board. The Globalization Team will have the aim of representing students in matters concerning the expansion of the CEMS Alliance and the challenges tied to it. Moreover, the meeting featured a workshop with Beiersdorf, which is a newly entered Corporate Partner, on best practices in CEMS corporate partnership. The cooperation with the CEMS Alumni Association continues, and the Student Board meeting was rounded off with a joint session with the CAA, who were holding their meeting simultaneously. The session featured a workshop in which different aspects of student-alumni cooperation were discussed, with the aim of implementing measures to improve this in the time to come. At the end of the publication you will find the list of Student Board contacts, If you have questions, or if you have any sort of input which you think is of relevance to the CEMS student community or CEMS in general, please share it with us. A word from the Executive Team

At the meeting in Milan, MIM affairs played a central role. This week gave the team the opportunity to share the results of previous projects and to gather further insights towards the ongoing project aimed at improving the curriculum. After Tommaso and Romain joined the team, the whole of the Student Board took the opportunity to focus on a subject we had been developing for a couple of months now... Cross-Cultural Management... This subject is at the core of our curriculum and also defines CEMSies as being true citizens of the world. However, teaching style, topics covered, workload, etc. still vary amongst the member schools. We took this chance to have a workshop on the future of CCM. It was interesting to match the expectations of those who will have the course this year facing the experienced members who had taken it in the past. This enabled us to put to the test our past research and come up with a set of tangible recommendations. All the learnings of our projects will be put together and communicated to the Programme managers. Next to this project, the MIM team has been running a feedback project in cooperation with all the members of the SB and the Programme Managers in order to get a broader point of view on this issue. 2. Global Values Statement – “A student-driven commitment to responsible leadership and global citizenship” statement will be handed in to graduates during the graduation ceremony. All the graduates will have the opportunity to proudly sign it on the stage and take it with them as a part of the official documents and as a nice/valuable memory. Our team is responsible for the promotion of the statement to increase awareness among students and graduates until the actual Annual Event (so you all will definitely hear from us soon again) and for the smooth logistic process during the whole event in Lisbon.

And for our other activities, until December we will bring up our cooperation with SENStation by helping them to promote Social Business Competition and ask you for your inputs for a CSR Booklet – the collections of the best practice examples from all the areas connected to CSR.

CEMS Social Responsibility Team

The CSR Team continues to promote and emphasise the importance of social responsibility among individuals as well as among the whole CEMS community. Social performance and CSR policy is becoming an important part of many companies‟ development strategy and we, as future leaders, already have a chance to participate and make a huge impact. Therefore the CSR Team works on projects to encourage your involvement and initiate your own ideas to increase CEMS social impact in the world. Our time in Milan was spent fruitfully; we proceeded with our on-going projects, discussed new ideas, brainstormed current threats and challenges and spent some great and highly valuable time together - five enthusiastic members, finally met after months communicating only through Skype and E-mails. As the CEMS Career Forum is just around the corner and the CEMS Annual Event is slowly approaching we are currently working mainly on CSR Toolkit Package for CEMS Clubs and logistics and promotion of Global Values Statement among the community. 1. CSR Toolkit Package – is a manual for CEMS

Club Presidents and their teams to propose them ideas and best practices from the CEMS community and how CSR can be executed at each university. This manual motivates and encourages new initiatives around CSR. Currently, each team member is working on a particular part of the toolkit, collecting the information and the most valuable knowledge. The CSR Toolkit will be sent to your CEMS Clubs already before the Career Forum.

The Student Board meeting in Milan ended with one final session together with the CEMS Alumni Association. While the good relationship between the Student Board and the CAA Executive Team continues, it was important for all of us to be able to discuss how we could improve the student-alumni relation on all levels of the Alliance. As both the SB and the CAA were holding our meetings at the same place and at the same time, we grabbed the opportunity to meet and share some views. The joint session featured a workshop in which four crucial aspects of the student-alumni relation were discussed. Firstly, we discussed how a Student-Alumni Mentorship Programme (SAMP) could be set up in countries missing one. A SAMP would be a very useful tool for students and alumni to be able to stay in touch not only on an institutional level, but also on a personal level, and experience shows that such a programme has the potential to bring about great benefits.

Secondly, we discussed how to promote the CAA and encourage students to become dedicated paying members after graduating. This is important to all of us, as the spirit of CEMS should not fade after graduation, but remain in the alumni. A third topic concerned joint student/alumni events, in order to map out the challenges in organising events together and understanding which are the events which most likely would ensure the attendance of both groups. Finally, we gathered idea on how to match academic needs of students in the different components of the MIM curriculum, with the availability and competencies of the alumni. The topics discussed during our session are highly relevant and cover many aspects of the relationship between students and alumni, but it is only a beginning. The next step will be putting all of our ideas into action, and we need everybody‟s commitment, both from students, and from alumni. Thank you, CAA, for a very nice cooperation so far!

After the large number of different projects carried out by the Student Relations Team over the course of the last year, we decided to redefine our goals and prioritise among the tasks we have. Accordingly, we have voted on changing the name of the team to Marketing & Communication (M&C), because these are the two areas which we are really focusing on now. We communicate with you, our fellow students, and other stakeholders of the CEMS Programme in many ways.

Also, our team is taking care of the CEMS Online Store. We sincerely hope that you‟ve been satisfied with our product offering and prices. It is important to note that the Student Board is not making a profit on the sale of the merchandise, our target is to just cover the production and shipping costs. We are convinced that wearing and using the CEMS merchandise are a really good way to raise awareness in and outside the alliance and to cultivate the sense of belonging to this awesome community. Hence, it is planned to broaden the product line and raise the quality of all the merchandise in the future. So, all your ideas on this topic would be more than welcome! We are really happy to introduce the new Google+ Page for CEMS. We are one of the first organisations to have one, and we now have 1 more tool for promotion ! So guys, let‟s +1 that ! Lastly, after our joint session at the Milan meeting we would like to further deepen cooperation with the Alumni Association in the form of joint projects in order to help bring the alumni and student communities closer to each other. So, besides the above-mentioned this will

be in the team‟s focus in the upcoming months.

Marketing & Communication

One way is Social Media. The official Facebook page developed in cooperation with the Head Office and the Alumni Association is a major tool of information sharing. As you may have noticed, activity has been rising, although there is still room for improvement. Therefore, we kindly invite you to share your local events as well as the pictures you take at the get-togethers in order to help us foster the CEMS spirit. Besides, we would like to draw your attention to the Welcome page from where you can redirect to the popular areas of cems.org, and the Flickr page that contains a lot of cool pictures taken at the Annual Events in Rotterdam. Secondly, there is the Newsletter that you receive three times a year following the Student Board meetings. The aim of this letter is to give you a sense of what the Student Board is doing and an update on the progress that we are making meeting by meeting. Having mentioned our work, I would like to remind you that you will have the chance to meet Student Boardies and some of the members of the Alumni Association in person at our stand during the Career Forum in Budapest and ask any questions you have in mind. Thirdly, we are taking part in the editing of the CEMS Magazine. The next edition will be presented to you in Budapest and will feature a lot of great input from the student side. We would like to express a special thanks to CEMS Club Copenhagen and all the other students that have sent us their input for this issue. Introducing the GlobalisationTeam… The meeting in Milan saw the formation of a new project team within the Student Board: The Globalisation Team! Facing the challenges that the rapid globalisation process of the CEMS alliance brings about, both academic and extracurricular in nature, it is the team‟s mission to foster equality and integration of CEMS academic members and students on a global scale. The founding members of the team are Hannes Klaeger, Henrietta Dreyer, Zeynep Hazal, Meilene Lam and Remo Drost. Being aware of the problems and challenges the globalisaton process of CEMS entails, we strongly believe that we can play an important role in the integration process of new CEMS academic members and their students, and to make suggestions for them to enjoy and especially profit from the benefits CEMS has to offer. In order to achieve such a Global Alliance, we need everybody‟s help, input and support. By everybody, we mean the entire CEMS community including Universities, Students, Corporate Partners as well as our strong Alumni network. Globalisation is not only a topic that matters to some of us, but will affect each one of us at the end of the day. Of course, next to the challenges, it entails major opportunities such as to even further enhance the reputation of CEMS or to reach out for global careers with Corporate Partners around the world; still, all these opportunities only prevail as long as all carrying members of the global CEMS vehicle turn at the same speed, maintenance and especially into the same direction. Of course, addressing and incorporating all CEMS students, academic members, the CEMS Head Office and last but not least also the Corporate Partner community is a challenging task in itself, but HEY, isn‟t CEMS supposed to be for exactly those that love the challenge?! We as new Globalisation Team are ready to face the upcoming challenges and are very committed and dedicated to make our projects a success, to foster a mutual learning process and hence to make a contribution to the establishment of an alliance of equal opportunities available to all its stakeholders around the world. So what are our plans? Currently we are focusing on 2 important points on our agenda:

1) Conduct a survey among all CEMS students in order to learn about how students experience the globalisation of CEMS, what their expectations are towards that process and what they recommend to do in order to meet them. Given that information, the Globalisation Team will have a clearer picture of what the topics are that it should put its focus on in a short and long term. The results of the survey will be published among all students late November / early December and will be forwarded to the CEMS Executive Board. We therefore encourage all students to fill in the survey and to motivate your friends to do the same if they are not already motivated enough themselves. Your opinion is very important to us and will play a major role for our upcoming projects. It„s your chance to help us make a difference! 2) The second focus point of the team is to organise a Global CEMS Day, which will involve all CEMS Universities around the world. This clearly is a long-term project that shall bring the entire alliance closer together. It shall be a mixture of an academic, career related and social event, asking all member schools, Corporate Partners and of course students to actively participate at any given CEMS location. The exact content of this day has not been finalised yet but we are confident that it would be great to bring the whole CEMS community together, to celebrate and experience the CEMS spirit on the very same day at every CEMS location in the world. We are happy that we are able to inform you about the Globalisation Team‟s existence, its projects and why we are there for you. We are also very much looking forward to working together with the local CEMS Clubs, who will be important entities for us to communicate with in order to coordinate global CEMS Student activities and ensure the wheel turns in the same direction. CEMS Club Support goes coaching!

After 3 months of intensive virtual work on the approaching CEMS Club Conference the new and “old” members of the CEMS Club Support team finally met. So, what are the news for our team and how do you actually get in contact with us? The next big thing is the CEMS Club Conference which will be held 16-18 November, just before the Career Forum in Budapest. The event is devoted to sharing knowledge and experience as well as fostering continuous communication between the clubs and the Student Board. The Clubs will also be updated on new initiatives started by the Student Board as well as to facilitate a better cooperation with Corporate Partners through an intensive session with company representatives of Google and P&G. The CEMS Club Support team has agreed on coaching the CEMS Clubs in a more customised and at the same time more individual manner. From now on all the clubs are divided between the team members. Each CEMS club will be contacted shortly by their “coach” for interactive coaching and support. Are you active in a new CEMS club? Having noticed that the communication between the CEMS Clubs and CEMS Club Support team is becoming even more virtual with only one annual meeting instead of two, we realised that we need to take more care of our communication tools and platforms. Therefore, the team is going to enrich the Hand-over Package with a new IT Package for the Clubs. After a successful test run of the new Facebook President group we will continue supporting this platform as an active exchange opportunity between the CEMS Clubs and information channel next to emails for the Student Board.

Last but not least we set up the next CEMS Club Awards for which all of the current students should have received a survey – please fill them out to give great CEMS Clubs the chance to be honored during the Annual Event plus receive prizes of up to 1500 Euros! For the ones active in the CEMS Clubs: don‟t wait until your CEMS Club Support Coach will contact you, but contact him or her soon for more efficient cooperation! We hope we will have enjoyable and at the same time helpful sessions together in Budapest that will contribute to making our great CEMS life even more amazing! 2 years ago a CEMS student of the RSM/NOVA class started an online housing platform: HousingAnywhere.com. The idea of Niels van Deuren idea was that “if you have outgoing exchange students who are leaving a room behind in a city, and if you have incoming exchange students who are looking for a room in that city, it should be fairly easy to match these students and to make housing a lot easier for everyone”. As simply as that. The platform was launched at the RSM in 2009, and with the help of other CEMS students the platform expanded to a few more schools. Half a year ago the HousingAnywhere Team collaborated with Information System Manager Pascal Vuylsteker (CEMS Head Office) to launch this platform for all the CEMS students as well. Housing is often a challenge when we CEMSies move and we hope to boost the number of CEMS students who rent out their room to other CEMS students using this platform. This would save a lot of time and irritations for students looking for an apartment abroad! We also hope that this initiative gives inspiration to other CEMS students to create something for the CEMS community as well! Remember
