Is the tide turning for the

    financial industry? A lot of

bets are riding on the RBI

    switching its credit policy

    stance and cutting rates and

    perhaps, the cash reserve

    ratio, on January 24. The

    central bank started hiking

rates in February 2010 in atight policy that continued

    until December 2011, when it

    left rates unchanged.

    A fall in food inflation

    coupled to increasing signs of

    distress from India Inc. could

lead to a rate cut. Easier credit

would take a while to work

    through the real economy and

    indeed, I think policy rates

    would need to drop 100-125

basis points before it makes a

    perceptible difference.

But any cut would have an

    instant, maybe short-lived,

    beneficial effect on share

    prices, especially in rate

    sensitives like financials, auto

and real estate. It would also

    have an influence on the

    rupee's exchange rates.

    Rate cuts may not happen.

    Inflation is politically-

    sensitive and there are

    impending assembly

    elections. If the US-Iran

    argument gets more heated,

    crude oil prices will spike,

    guaranteeing more inflation.

It's a different matter that rate

    cuts (or hikes) have zero

    influence on crude-driven

inflation; it's more a matter ofbeing seen to do something.

However, if there is a rate

    cut and some promises of

    more rate cuts, the market

    will bid financials up. The

    rupee will probably harden,

due to FII inflows rather than

    fundamentals. In fact, in

    anticipation, the market is

    already bidding financials and

real estate shares up. We may

see a buy on rumour, sell on

    news effect playing out.

If there's a minimal cut of

    25 basis points, prices will

stabilise. There will be a sell

off if there are no cuts and a

big sell off if there is a rate

    hike. If there's a larger-than-

    anticipated cut of 50 basis

    points, rate-sensitives will

    shoot up.

    The highest-risk, highest-

    return segment is listed real

    estate firms. The major NBFCs

    are also high-risk, high-

    return. Both sectors have

taken a battering so, a big

return could occur even on a

    dead-cat bounce. On the other

hand, if the RBI disappoints, a

    huge sell off may occur.

It's also possible to go longin the futures of specific

banks directly, or to go long in

    the Bank Nifty futures. Given

    banks have good, high-beta

    correlation with the Nifty, it's

    possible to hedge via the

    Nifty. Due to the hedging

    possibilities and also because

    banks are seen to have

    sounder balance sheets, they

are less high risk than real

    estate or NBFCs.

    Keep that January 24

    deadline in mind. Settlement

    comes upon January 25, and

it could get chaotic if the RBI

pulls a rabbit out of the hat.

    There may be frantic volume

    action in these two sessions.

    TALK SHOW

    2

Policy flip flops, delays are concernsHow are the foreign institutional investors

viewing developments across the US and Euro-

zone post the bailout packages? Do you think

Europe is nearing a resolution to its debt crisis?

There is a level of nervousness in the global

markets regarding the ability of Europe to

develop an imminent resolution to the Euro-zone

sovereign debt crisis. The markets are looking

for a solution faster than what political

    compulsions will allow.

Does India still figure as apreferred investment destination

    among emerging markets (EMs)?

India has been one of the worst

    performing emerging markets last

year, due to a combination of

global and domestic factors. In this

backdrop, the FII outflow of only

$500 million in 2011 has been a positive

surprise as compared to the outflows

    experienced by other emerging markets.

However, the long term attractiveness ofinvesting in India remains intact, and we do

expect some investors to use the current

    slowdown as an investment opportunity.

How are the foreign institutional investors

(FIIs) viewing the so-called policy paralysis

with respect to the reform process in India?

Do you think that these concerns are

    somewhat overdone?

In a world where India is competing for

investments, any slowdown in growth ordecision making is bound to have a negative

outcome. Policy flip flops and delays are a

concern area for investors and the governments

decisiveness in an uncertain environment will

do a lot to change sentiment.

What is your own strategy at DSP Blackrock? Did

you move into cash in the process of the fall in

2011? What are your top picks (sectors) in the

    current market conditions?

The returns of the DSP BlackRock Equity

Fund during the period from January 2011

    through November 2011 have

outperformed the CNX500 benchmarkby 4.40 per cent. We are looking for

value investments in some of the

    interest rate sensitive sectors.

Are you looking to increase your

    exposure to the interest rate

    sensitive sectors?

We are looking for value investment

opportunities in rate sensitive sectors. The RBI

has already articulated their view that the cycle

of rate increases is at its end and that monetaryeasing is likely to come through.

What are the downside risks to earnings

growth going forward? Have the markets

factored in the worst? What are you advising

    your clients at this juncture?

Although the Indian market has already seen a

~10 per cent downgrade in earnings and may

see continued pressures in the December and

March quarters, we believe that FY12 earnings

growth could be near 10-11 per cent. What willbe more relevant for the market, though, is the

outlook for FY13 and FY14 earnings.

    The outlook for power

    transmission line EPC

    (engineering, procurement and

    construction) sector is more sanguine

    than other segments in the

    infrastructure space as business

    visibility is relatively better and

    margin pressure is less severe.

    KEC International is among the

best bets in the space not only

because it is the largest player but

    more due to well-diversified order

book both in terms of geography as

well as business mix. In fact, post the

bagging of orders worth Rs 1,253

crore last week KECs order book

position of Rs 9,000 crore has reached

the highest level in its history.

Analysts expect the company toreport high double-digit sales growth

    and maintain its operating profit

margin in FY12 and FY13 despite

    competition and high input scenario.

    Besides strong fundamentals,

valuation of 4 times FY13 estimated

    earnings is at the trough.

    STRONG VISIBILITY

    Besides geographical diversification of

order book (60 per cent internationaland rest domestic), venturing into new

    areas namely power systems, water,

    cable and telecom, which contribute

35 per cent of the total order book,

has also helped achieve a milestone.

    According to Ramesh Chandak,

managing director of KEC, the strategy

    of becoming an overall infrastructure

    player instead of purely a

    transmission company has helped.

    KECs globally diversified model

has enabled it to gain an edge over its

    domestic peers in the transmission

    and distribution space. While

    domestic players have struggled to

    secure orders amid the slowdown,

    KEC has consistently maintained its

average quarterly run rate of Rs 1,200

crore since the past several quarters. In addition, new businesses of water,

railway and telecom are faring well

(pace of new orders is gradually

    increasing), points out Shailesh

    Kanani, analyst, Angel Broking.

The company expects to grow its

order book at 15 per cent in FY12 as

the pipeline remains strong with large

    number of tenders pending from

    Power Grid followed by private

utilities and also in some overseas

    markets (Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia,

    South Africa, Nigeria, Central Asia,

Brazil and Canada), and margins to be

    maintained around 9-10 per cent.

    According to Rahul Garg, analyst,

    HSBC Securities and Capital Markets,

The Rs 9,000 crore order book is

likely to drive annual sales growth of

20-25 per cent in FY12-13 as majority

of these orders are scheduled for

delivery over next 18-24 months. He

    expects margins to surprise positively

in FY13 as new ventures improve and

    mark-to-market losses reverse.

    RISKS, VALUATIONS

In the medium term, though, the

    mark-to-market loss on account of

rupee depreciation remains a key risk.

The company incurred a forex loss

(notional) of Rs 17 crore in September

2011 quarter, which along with jump

in interest cost (85 per cent) led to net

profit margin drop more than 200

    basis points.

The other risk emanates from the

progress of generation projects. If the

pace of execution remains slow, it

could impact KECs longer-termprospects as transmission projects

    typically start 12-15 months after

    commencement of construction of a

    generation project. High working

    capital intensity of business

    (consolidated debt-equity ratio of 1.5

    times), increasing competitive

pressures and project execution risk in

the MENA (Middle East and North

    Africa) region are other concerns.

While these concerns had seenthe stock touch Rs 31.8 (52-week low)

on December 20, 2011, it has

recovered 29 per cent since then to

    Rs 42 currently. Analysts believe

there is steam left given the target

    multiple of 6-7 times one-year

    forward earnings. Says Kanani, Given

the latent potential of the company

and healthy return ratios (25 per

    cent), valuations well below its

    average historic multiple are

    compelling. Garg, too, reiterates his

overweight rating and has a target

    price of Rs 80.

KEC InternationalDiversification has enabled it to gain edge over domestic peers

    Markets consolidated on

    Wednesday to end flat after

    investors remained cautious on

concerns of muted third quarter earnings

    growth and November industrial

production data. However, the broadermarket outperformed the benchmark

indices after renewed focus was seen in

select mid-cap and small-cap stocks. The

markets traded in a narrow range for most

    part of the trading session.

    The BSE benchmark index- Sensex

ended at 16,176, higher by 11 points and

the 50 share Nifty ended at 4,861, up 11

points. The Sensex traded in a narrow

    range of 117 points.

Hindalco was the top gainer among theSensex stocks, up nearly 6% to end at Rs

130 after Novelis Inc, also part of the Aditya

Birla Group, renewed its can-body sales

agreement with Coca-Cola Bottlers' Sales &

    Services Company (CCBSS). Sterlite

Industries also jumped 4.8% to Rs 100.

DLF ended up 4% after it received Rs

440 crore from sale of 28-acre land at

    Gurgaon.

The broader market was in action on

bargain hunting by investors. The BSE

mid-cap index added 1% or 54 points to

close at 5,505 and the small-cap index

shut shop higher by 79 points at 6,075

    levels.

Real estate sector stocks were on the

buzzer today on anticipation of a rate cut

by the central bank and positive

    announcements by certain companies in

the sector. The BSE Realty index was the

top sectoral gainer, up nearly 5% or 69

    points at 1,547 levels.

    Anant Raj Industries, Sobha

    Developers, Unitech, Oberoi Realty,

    Parsvnath Developers, Prestige Estates

and Phoenix Mills were the top gainers

    among the realty stocks.

IT stocks were subdued ahead of the

Infosys results which are to be announced

tomorrow. The BSE IT index ended lower

by 1.4% at 5,832 points. Teck and FMCG

    indices also ended lower.

From the IT pack, HCL Tech, Wipro and

    Infosys were the laggards.

In a recent report, analysts at Nomura

suggest that Infosys will post on-par

growth compared to peers such as TCS in

the near-term (which have been more

upbeat on commentary). This coupled with

    bigger potential gains from rupee

    depreciation and low expectations built

into valuations makes them positive on the

stock. They reaffirmed a Buy rating on thestock with a target price of Rs 3,300.

    However, analysts at Angel Broking

expect EBITDA margin of the entire tier-I IT

pack to improve because of sharp INR

    depreciation against US dollar.

    Among the individual stocks, Sangam

India surged 7% to Rs 36 on receiving Rs

63 crore toll projects from the National

    Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

NMDC moved higher by 2.2% at Rs

173 after the company signed a contract

for By Product Plant (BPP) package for the

upcoming 3-MTPA integrated steel plant at

Nagarnar, with the consortium lead by

    Shriram EPC Ltd (SEPC).

Wockhardt soared 11% to Rs 337,

extending its Tuesday 3% gain, after the

company said it has received final

approval from the US health regulator to

    market generic Fluticasone nasal spray

    used for treating allergic nasal

    inflammation in the American market.

    The market breadth ended positive

with 1,868 gainers and 951 losers.

classified as a large-cap equity fundunder CRISIL Mutual Fund Ranking

where it has ranked in the top thirty

percentile since the last eight quarters

    till September 2011. The consistency

in ranking is an indication of the

    funds superior performance and

    disciplined portfolio management.

Mahesh Patil has been managing this

    fund since November 17, 2005.

PERFORMANCEBirla Sun Life Frontline Equity Fund is

a flagship fund of Birla Sun Life

Mutual Fund. As on January 3, 2012,

    the fund has posted annualised

returns of 20.06 per cent over three

years vis--vis 17.29 per cent by the

category and 16.73 per cent by the

benchmark (BSE 200). It has also

    outperformed the benchmark as well

as the S&P CNX Nifty over 1,3,5 and

    7-year time frames.The funds performance vis--vis

peers and the benchmark can also be

gauged from the growth of an initial

investment of Rs 1,000 in the fund at

the time of its launch which would

have grown to Rs 8,001 as on January

    3, 2012. A similar investment in the

    category would have returned Rs

    7,253 while the benchmark index

would have appreciated to Rs 5,302.

A systematic investment plan of Rs

1,000 per month invested for 7 years

    (principal Rs 84,000), would have

grown to Rs 1,22,497 vis--vis Rs

99,127 by the benchmark delivering a

    11 per cent return vis--vis 4.6 per

cent by the benchmark. In terms of volatility, the fund is

    comparatively less volatile (25.55 per

cent) than the category (26.43 per

cent) and benchmark (29.17 per cent).

The fund has close to 90 per cent

exposure to CRISIL defined large cap

stocks over the last one year.

Traditionally, large cap stocks tend to

be more stable than mid cap stocks

    during times of market volatility.

    PORTFOLIO DIVERSIFICATION

    The fund remains well diversified

with an average of 57 securities in its

    portfolio for a three-year period.

    Portfolio concentration, defined as the

    relative proportion of individual stocks

and sectors, is an important parameter

in C RISILs methodology used to

    assess risk mitigation in portfolio

construction for a mutual fund. A

    combination of risk adjusted returns

    and portfolio based parameters makes

    CRISILs proprietary ranking

    methodology unique.

    INVESTMENT STYLE

An analysis of the portfolios over the

past three years reveals that the fundmanager has taken active cash calls in

    reaction to volatility in markets.

During the calendar year of 2008,

when the equity market was going

through a tough phase, the fund had

    maintained an average equity

exposure of around 80 per cent. The

fund had reduced its equity exposure

to as low as 71 per cent in November

2008. Once markets recovered in April

2009 and volatility began easingtowards the mid of 2009, the fund

    steadily increased its equity

    investments. Since then, the average

    equity exposure maintained by the

fund measures 91 per cent till

    November 2011.

A look at the funds sector

    holdings across a three-year time

frame reveals that the fund had

highest exposure to banking (~16 per

    cent) followed by software, petroleum

    products, power and industrial capital

goods with exposures in the range of

    6-8 per cent.

    on damages claimed

in a suit filed against its

    former board of directors,

    certain employees and audit

    firm Price Waterhouse (PW) to

    avoid paying a higher non-

    refundable court fee initially,

sources said.According to sources, the company

has to pay 1% of the total damages

claimed in the petition as court fee and in

future, it may seek more damages once

    they settle all the issues.

    The damage claim will assume

    significance once the trial against

former Chairman B Ramalinga Raju and

others in a local court is finished. If the

    judgement goes against the accused,

the damages claim will have strength, sources explained.

"One per cent becomes big if thedamage runs in to thousands of crores. It

is not wise to pay such amount initially as

the company is yet to make payments in

some of the issues that the company

agreed to settle," sources told PTI.

"Though the company agreed to settle

    some issues which involved huge

payments, the total cash has not been

paid. Once they are settled, the damages

may go up. To that extent, the company

reserved the right to seek more damages,"sources added.

The Nifty as expected faced stiff

    resistance around the medium-term

    moving average of 4,880. Tomorrow

could be a decisive day for the index,

for if the index is able to break above

4,880 then we could be in for another100-150 points rally with upside

    targets of near 4,980-odd levels.

However, on the flip side in case the

index breaks below 4,825, then the

index runs the risk of falling to 4,750-

odd levels. On Thursday, the Nifty is

likely to face resistance around 4,875-

    4,885, while seek support around
