Bring on the NewcomersTexas State will have nine newcomers to the team this year, with six trans-fer players and three freshmen right out of high school. The team’s lone four-year transfer is D.J. Brown who was a three-year starter at San Jose State and played against Texas State when the Bobcats were in the WAC.

Five junior college transfers are JaMarcus Weatherspoon, Cameron Naylor, Ojai Black, Ethan Montalvo and Ed Seay. The five come from all around the country, ranging from Missouri, Florida, Nebraska, and Texas.

The three freshman are all Texas products with Brian Herring, Jonathan Wiley and Austin Evans. Evans is one of the bigger players in Texas State history at 6-11. He will need to put on some muscle as he is 225 and is viewed as a player who can be dominant in time.

Coach Kaspar said about the newcomers “I do think we brought in some players who can help us immediately and will have to help us immediately. Only five players are returning from last year’s team, therefore, our new-comers will be very vital to our success, both in terms of their talents and playing abilities as well as their leadership.”

Familiar FacesTexas State will have five re-turners from last year’s team. Coming back from the 2013-14 team are Wes Davis, Emani Gant, Victor Bermudez, Kavin Gilder-Tilbury and Kendell Ramlal.

Davis and Bermudez are the two returning seniors, joining Brown who only has just one season of eligibility. The five returners averaged a com-bined 26.0 points per game and 12.3 rebounds per game.

All-Sun Belt Second-Team SelectionJunior forward Emani Gant was named to the All-Sun Belt Second-Team. Gant is coming off a season in which he averaged 8.9 points per game and

5.0 rebounds per game. Both totals are most among returning players from last year’s team. He began his career with a 19-point

game at Houston in his first Division I game. Gant finished second in the Sun Belt with a field goal percentage of .546 (118-of-216).

“Emani had some very good games last year, and then struggled in others,” Kaspar said. “He accumulated fouls in

several games which left him on the bench last year more than I’d hoped. He has to become more a consistent of-fensive player and become a better rebounder and de-fender. He is very capable of doing this. He has gotten himself in pretty good shape. He has improved his of-fensive game.”

Fourth All TimeDavis made his mark on the defensive end last season. Davis held NBA First Round Draft Pick Elfrid Payton to 10 points at Strahan Coliseum. Davis led the team in steals with 36, giving him 134 for his career.

Below is where Davis stands all-time at Texas State.1. 192 David Sykes 1999-032. 161 Donte Mathis 1995-993. 154 Ryan White 2007-114. 134 Wes Davis 2011-pres.5. 123 Brandon Bush 2005-096. 114 Terry Conerway 2002-047. 106 Dameon Sansom 1993-978. 104 Kevin Stiner 1985-899. 101 Brandon Thomas 2006-0810. 99 Jeff Foster 1995-99

Learning to Win the Close GamesTexas State’s record of 8-23 last season can be misleading in some ways. According to Ken Pomeroy, one of the leading advanced statistical web-sites in college basketball, the Bobcats were ranked as the sixth unluckiest team last season.

According to KenPom.com Luck is defined as “A measure of the deviation between a team’s actual winning percentage and what one would expect from its game-by-game efficiencies Essentially, a team involved in a lot of close games should not win (or lose) all of them”

Texas State had 10 games decided by six points or fewer, within two pos-sessions and went 1-9 in those games.

Skilled ShootersThe Bobcats hope to have better shooting this season, and have brought in players to help that

cause, along with developing their returners. Two of the players that are most thought to be able

to help the shooting are Ethan Montalvo and the improvement of Victor Bermudez.

“Ethan is an excellent shooting guard,” Kaspar said. “He is a very tough young man who knows how to play without the basketball. He is one of the better shooters I’ve coached in my career. We will need his shooting abil-ity.”

Bermudez, struggled from the field last sea-son, but the team hopes he will look more like the player who was recruited when he was top-10 in the country in junior college with 98 made three-pointers, good for seventh.

“Vic is another senior guard that has shown a lot of improvement for us this year,” Kaspar

said. “I’m hopeful he will be a big help to us this year. His at-titude has been great, his work ethic has been great, and he’s shown good leadership in preseason and summer workouts.”
