FROM THE EDITORS' PUKA By Aki Nosaka

First, Ray and I would like to sincerely thank you all for the many phone calls, get well cards, prayers and hospital visits. We truly appreciated your kind concern regarding Ray's condition after his rec~nt heart attack. He is doing fine now and will soon be back to doing his normal activities. We are very grateful to Stanley Tanaka who "volunteered" to print last month's PPP in our absence.

In the last issue, part of the editor's messaage was inadvertently cut off - we would like to continue with the pitch about the WWII Monument which did not print out. SEPTEMBER BOARD HI-LITES by Joe Muramatsu

Editor's Note: President Stanley M. Akita is 071 a well-deserved vacation.

Ms. Jane Komeiji of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii presented an interesting discourse on the up-coming art and historical exhibition entitled "Crossings." She asked Club 100 members who participated in the liberation of Bruyeres and Biffontaine to be prepared to share their stories and memorabilia for the exhibit. The JCCH exhibit will focus on the relationship between Hawaii and France.

The Board approved a donation of $5,000 to the Sons and Daughters for the wonderful painting job that was done on the Clubhouse building.

The Anniversary Committee is slowly getting the program into shape. They are planning to send out a survey to find out what the members would like to have for the Reunion in 1997.

The Memorial Service Committee promised that we will clear the Memorial Service area in time . for the 25th Infantry Division to hold its ceremony on September 29.

The only nominees for officers for next year are: Joe Muramatsu, President; Don Matsuda, First Vice President; Ed Ikuma, Second Vice President, and Yukio Tanji, Secretary/Treasurer. Nominations are still open if there are members willing to run for office.

The Board approved $50 for the refreshments for the Spark Matsunaga Institute for Peace poetry reading event. As a co-sponsor for the event, Club 100 was asked to provide refreshments and 25 lei.

Four volunteers were needed to ride the sons and daughters float in the Aloha Week Parade, but there were no takers. So, Robert Arakaki (B), said, "Joe, if you go, I'll go." That made two of us. Robert volunteered Roy Nakayama and Drusilla drafted Mits Furumoto (A). The float was a thing of beauty. The Sons and Daughters of both 442nd and lOOth must have put in a lot of effort to decorate the float. Riding the float is an experience that will always be remembered.

The PukaPuka Parade is the monthly newsletter of Club 100, the 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans. Published at 520 Kamoku Street, Honolulu HI 96826.

The Poetry Reading was attended by more than 40 people. Helene and Matt Matsunaga welcomed everyone and Martin Tohara spoke about Sparky. The poems (haiku and tanka) were read in both English and in Japanese. Light refreshments were provided by Club 100. Because of your generosity, there were enough lei for each of the poets and the special guests. We used the "leftover" dendrobium sprays to decorate the refreshment table and then took them over to Pier 19 to be used for the Aloha Week Parade Float. Several of the poets were unable to attend, so the extra lei were given to the fleat riders.

In last month's issue, we thanked former Legislator David Hagino and his father for their donation of artwork to Club 100. David was at the poetry reading and said that the artwork was contributed by himself and his wife, Louann Ha' abeo Guanson, who is the Director of the Matsunaga Peace Institute.

A special thanks goes to Frances Okazaki (HQ) who attended the poetry reading, and jumped in to help with the refreshments and clean up. Earlier in the afternoon, she came to the Clubhouse to help put finishing touches on the lei. After the poetry reading, she drove to Pier 19 to give some moral support and encouragement to the sons and daughters who were working on the float. She deserves an award for her "continuing service." She reminds me of the Ever Ready battery rabbit--she just keeps on going and going and going.

The poetry reading event is a good example of how Club 100 is firmly net-worked in this community. I applaud the Board's decision to have the Club co-sponsor the event not just because of Spark Matsunaga's relationship to the Club, but because the mission and goals of the Peace Institute are in keeping with Club 100's. The days of building bus shelters, raising money for orphanages, and painting Kuakini Hospital may be over, but Club 100 and individual members can still make significant contributions for the good of the community. and thereby fulfill its motto, "For Continuing Service."

. Many thanks to the following PPP volunteers who turned out on Augu,st 29 to collate: Bernard Akamine, Otomatsu Aoki, Robert Arakaki, Kunio Fujimoto, Ralph Fukunaga, Mits Furumoto, Saburo Hasegawa, Tokuichi Hayashi, Ted Hamasu, Chester Hada, Michael Hamamoto, Mary Hamasaki, Kenneth Higa, Ed lkuma, Isamu Inouye, Shigeru Inouye, Seiso Kamishita, Gladys Kawakami, Kenneth Kaneko, Susumu Kunishige, Arthur Komiyama, Al Matsumoto, Yoshikiyo Mugitani:'Joichi Muramatsu, Roy Nakayama, Tommy Nishioka, AId Nosaka, Takeichi Onishi, Susumu Ota, Leo Sato, Kenichi 'Suehiro, Tamotsu & Yoneko Shimizu, Goro Shimida, Stanley Tanaka, Yukio Tanji, Masa Totna; Marie Yoneshiige, Jerry & Carol Yamaki, Kaoru & Sadako Y onesawa

ABLE CHAPTER NEWS By Tommy Nisbioka

Recently, Dr. Takashi Manago had a surgery and was confined in the hospital for a few days. He is now at home recuperating, and doing very well with the loving care of his won~erful wife.

During Dr . Manago' s absence from the office, his son, who is also a dentist, is taking his place, so there is no need for his patients to worry in case of any emergency. Here's wishing Takashi a speedy recovery.

Our sincerest condolences and sympathy go out to the family of Mrs. Eleanor .Y oshikawa, who passed away in August. Mrs. Yoshikawa was the wife of our late member Mac Yoshikawa. May they both rest in peace.

In August, "Doc" and Mildred Hosaka took their family (children and grandchildren) to the island of Kauai. Each year the whole family takes a trip before school starts.

Robert & Kay Yoshioka will be going to Reno & Tahoe on September 18th returning on the 24th. Kay tells me instead of going to Las Vegas, for a change they will be going to Reno & Tahoe. Who knows? you may be luckier there! Also on the same tour will be Ed and Kay Harada. I would like to suggest to Kay that instead of taking a good luck frog charm, to take an elephant charm--just might change your luck.

While shopping at Kahala Mall reently, I met Helene Matsunaga who was babbysitting her granddaughter. The baby is so cute and she has a terrific personality, always smiling. It was nice seeing you, Helene .

. "Biffa" Moriguchi's Japan tour group will be having an important luncheon on Saturday, September 28th at 11 :0.0. a.m. at the clubhouse. Besure to be there.

Honolulu Club 10.0. Golfers: The Club 10.0. super senior golfers held their 1996 golfing safari at the Volcano Golf & Country Club and Sea Mountain Golf Course on September 5 - 7. Eighteen super seniors from the ages of 76 to 82 years enjoyed their stay at the Kilauea Military Comp (KMC), courtesy of Randy Hart, camp director. Tak" Stanley Takahashi, leader phoned this writer night before coming to Hilo asking whether he sould bring his electric blanket. The reply was "no need, the cabins have heaters nQw"-,_ T~e_ r~por,t w~ tha(the nights }V~re Warp:1 so thcl.t th,ey did not need the heater~. The weather during the stay for the golfers was good with sunshine--surnmer weather. I can agree with the wives of the men, their ages have caught up with the former samurais. After the first day of golf they were in bed at 8 o'clock, - no TV, no drinking and no monkey business. They were up before 6:0.0. a.m. hungry, looking for their breakfast. A few of the guys drove about 20. miles to Naalehu to' eat their breakfast. After 4 days of golfing, one day in Honolulu, and three days on the Big Island, the former warriors were tired and eager to catch an earlier flight for home. Their lunch and followship at Cafe 10.0. were short this time due to age and physical condition. Our thanks to Tak Takahashi for being the leader, managing the safari, keeping the golf scores and distributing the prizes.

Observation: It was good to see th.e super seniors enjoy the sport of golf in spite of their problems of poorer vision and hearing, and unable to have their legs move faster. I believe 'the wives are happy to see them get out of the house and enjoy their days out doors enjoying golf and fellowship. The score is secondary.' Yes, it is better to spend some money for the sport of golf, then taking their money to the doctors, clinics, medications and hospitals. The bottom line is KEEP HEAL THY!

He has been living on the "easy" with nothing to worry about but his bonsai. Everyone seemed to have enjoyed the food which was the chefs menu with my request to delete all pork and beef dishes. The "talking story" portion of the program brought out some forgotten com at acgion and some funny stories. George Fujikawa who was our first supply sargent before going to MIS gave us a brief summary of his wartime service. For the entertainment part of the program, Kazuto Shimizu led the group in community singing with song sheets he prepared covering familiar songs from the "good old days". The program closed with door prizes.

He says Windy Aoki in Kona and Morris Kihara in Hilo are still around and kicking. I called Tatsuo "Baker" Miyashita at his Hilo Pastry Shop but missed him as he had just left the shop. I talked to his wife and she says he is okay. I also called "Jacko" Isami Mayahara but no one answered the phone. According to Hisanaga, Jack is now a farmer.

· RURAL CHAPTER CHATTER By Ted M. Hamasu

Our annual picnic was held at the Yamaki' s home on the beach at West Loch. It was a beautiful Sunday, 21 July '96, promising a fine picnic day. Members and wives were assisting Jerry set up the place for the expected crowd when we arrived there.

We felt that young people were needed to pep us our gatherings, so the S&D and their children were invited at no cost. The picnic was enjoyed by about 60 people. Kudos to the following families for encouraging their children to join us. Hayashi, Iwasa, Kapuniai, Kihara, Yamaki and Yoshida. Somehow, I found that having them around was mo fun. ..

At 1l:00 a.m., Prexy Hamasu called the picnic to order and said that there will be a very short meeting prior to the picnic. He said that he will only read the itineraries of the coming trip to Japan. After finishing, he introduced Mrs. Mimi Nakano, the Director of the Oral History Program for the S&D orgainization. He in turn introduced Carl and Sheilla Tonaki, who assists her in the program. She commented that both are dedicated to the Oral History of Club 100 and that Carl's dad was a member of Dog Chapter. The prexy asked for a motion to adjourn but was asked to take up an unfinished business business by Hakaru Taoka. The business at hand was the criteria to which a members must qualify to be nominated for the outstanding membership award~ The written briefs were passed out earlier, so 15 minutes was alloted for questions. Since there were none, the Prexy called for a motion for acceptance, which was unanimously approved. There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned.

Lunch was served at 12:00 noon, led by the children of our S&D. Most of them only went for the hot dogs, terri beef and chicken on sticks, but no stew and rice. Why? We had ono curry and tomato stewk which goes great with hot rice As always, the Yamakis donated varieties of tsukemono which compliment's the stew very nicely. Oh yes, before I forget, I would like to thank our ladies for the many kinds of dessert which was appreciated very much. After about an hour to enjoy the lunch, we passed out the bingo cards and enjoyed the game because it was promised that everyone would win a prize, even the keikis.

"'M~lt~'gr~~ia;"pai;ru;H~KaI~il~~wa' ior·p~cliasing all ofihe prizes for the game .. BAKER CHAPTER NEWS by Bernard Akamine

At our August Baker Chapter meeting, there were 17 men and Mrs. Evelyn Tsuda in attendance. China Yamashina's bread pudding this time was different--he used pineapple in the recipe and it (the bread pudding) disappeared even before the meeting ended. Mrs. Margaret Kimura donated $200 in memory of BJ Kimura. Our condolences to Iwao Takamori of Maui whose wife Miyoko passed away.

Our September family night was attended by 58 adults and 11 children. Donations were plentiful--Joe Muramatsu, demitasse set, disposable cameras, caps and wine; Sakae Tanigawa, tsukemono and bingo prizes; Sonsei Nakamura, rice; Rikio Tsuda, cake; Ken Kaneko, beer; Roy Nakatani, watercress; Bernard Akamine, pomelo; Stanley and Drusilla Tanaka, bingo prizes; Hachiro Shikamura, Okinawa mochi; Toshikatsu Nakahara, cake; Ben Yamamoto, desserts; James Inafuku, namasu; Robert Arakaki, soft drinks; Tom Tsubota, soft drinks; Hiromi Fujimura, rice; Bessie Ichimura, cake and bingo prizes; Louise (Katahara) Ching, plastic storage

Mugitani, Hajime Kodama, John Kihara, Ray Nosaka, Ben Yamamoto, James Inafuku, Sakae Takahashi, Tokuji Dno. Yoshio Hirose couldn't attend, but he sent his donation and his greetings to all the members. The food that Bob Aoki prepared was fabulous--roast ,beef, ,b~be~u~, ~hkken, miso butter fish, garlic bread, steamed broccoli, and tossed gree~." To~ujLrui.d I buttered the French bread that were already sliced. I don't remember the number of loaves, but when we got to the end, I mentioned that Aoki knew just how much butter to : soften with garlic for the amount of bread--everything came out even! Tokuji,s~id some credit should also be given to the people applying the butter, too! Robert's response was, "Just like a school teacher--he doesn't want to give me extra credit!" I got to the clubhouse at 9:30 that morning and to my surprise the tables were already set up. The shaved ice was a huge success. Rikio Tsuda said shaved ice again for our Christmas party on December 14.

The continuing mystery of N gain Yee--at the August meeting, someone who thought Yee was assigned to the cook section said to ask Hachiro Shikamura about him, At our Family Night, I asked Shikamura, but he has no knowledge of Ngain Vee.

Since my daughter started working in the Club office, she calls me frequently about all sorts of things. Just before our September Family Night, she received a call from Ernest Coz, who was a replacement for Baker. Shortly after the Rescue of the Lost Battalion, Ernie was separated from the unit and when the war ended, he was with a communications outfit near the French/German border. After returning to his home in California, he received a few issues of the PukaPuka Parade. However, he re-enlisted during the Korean War and lost touch with the Club after that. Upon retirement, he cared for his wife until her death two years ago. This was his first trip to Hawaii, and of all things, he heard a bus driver mention the veterans of the lOOth Infantry Battalion and their Club 100. He found the telephone number and called the Clubhouse, still not believing that such an organization existed. The next day on her way to work, Drusilla and her husband picked him up at the Hale Koa Hotel and took him to the Clubhouse so he could see for himself. Heard he had a great time meeting the boys and looking at the property. We invited him to the Family Night, but he took a rain-check. He promised to come back next year and spend more time at the Oubhouse. Interesting thing-since he's a kotonk (hapa-haole) and never been on a plantation, he had a hard time understanding pidgin. He was the radio-man and had to call in the Medics to tend to the wounded. Often he was told to call for "hapai-ko," which he did, not knowing what he was saying. All these years he wondered what that meant. His question was answered after more than 50 years when he visited the Clubhouse and asked President Stanley Akita about it.

The Aloha Week Parade was a huge success from the standpoint of our sons and daughters. They worked hard to put together a beautiful floral float. A floral replica of the purple heart medal was on the front of the float. Floral replicas of the insignia of the 100th, 442nd, MIS and 1399th were beautifully done. Joe Muramatsu, Roy Nakayama, Robert Arakaki, and Mits Furumoto (A) were the lucky ones able to ride the float. Stanley Tanaka and Avin Oshiro (A) carried the banner walking ahead of the float. Tokuji Ono and Robert Arakaki donated a huge amount of greenery. Central Pacific Bank gave $5,000 to help with the expenses. This is a comment made by Roy Nakayama after the parade, "After witnessing the efforts made by the Sons and Daughters on this float project, I can die in peace knowing that the Sons and Daughters can take over the club and its programs." Someone else mentioned that the most important thing about the float was that children of all the Nisei Veterans worked together in harmony to make this project a success. This is the same sentiment taken by a fellow member. His vision is to have in his lifetime ONE Nisei Veterans Club--all four veterans clubs consolidate and promoting the same causes.

See you all at Punchbowl on Sunday, September 29. Come early to decorate the graves. Memorial Service begins at 8:30 a.m.

HEADQUARTERS CHAPTER NEWS . By Kenichi Suehiro

Our sympathy and condolences to Harry Amaki's family. Harry was an origianl Headquarters member under Calvin Shimogaki and recently passed away. Harry was a rugged person who didn't mind swiping the wild pig in the forests of Shelby. He had me taste armadillo which was good--like roast pork.

Arthur Tamashiro says that Tom Nosse may not be the winningest player with his golf, but he sure can hit long balls, and is in good shape for his age of 82 -he can outwalk the other players Tom you may be a winner soon - just keep practicing.

Nancy Nakamura - to Japan again with Biffa in October, and went to New York in August. Have a good time, Nancy--you can't take the money with you into the next world.

Gathering news for our chapter is a pain! the team captains are not home or are without any news. Yet the members enjoy reading about their friends.

Ak.i Akimoto won the last HQ Ace, so at least he wins sometime. Not so with Marshall and Margaret Higa who never seem to win at all. Marshall, I suggest that you pay Richard Hamada to teach you and Margaret how to play golf--he might give you a discount for his lessons--who knows--it might help even though you are a hasbeen, hopeless golfer.

Our IOOth Golf Club went to Hilo to golf at the KMC facility. They had a good time. Richard Hamada won all of the prizes. It seems that he is always a winner

Headquarters Members--please remember that after our Memorial service on September 29th, we are having a reunion at the clubhouse This is your chance to meet old friends and to talk stories. Judge Saruwatari is in charge and he must know how many members and guests will be present--members, wives, children, widows" grandchildren-~please phone the judge at 373-4050 and he'll be happy to hear from you.

My son-in-law, Earl, and I went to Juneau, Alaska to fish for salmon. Too bad the salmon were still out at sea. I hooked only 2 and both were eaten each night as sashimi. Even the haole fishennan who never ate sashimi before enjoyed the fresh salmon sashimi. Others who hooked salmon did not volunteer their catch, but took theirs home. One can be sure of hooking halibut and other fish~-plenty for everyone. Anyone intrested in going to Juneau should contact Alaska Conection who will take good care of you. Lots of women are part of the group - no danger or fear about the boat, sea, or elements. As safe as being in a pond ..

I called Arthur Tamashiro who came up with a suggestion about our children taking over our club. "Split our resources and establish scholarship funds for our children or grandchildren. If we have something to offer members they may be interested in becoming active. At least if we offer the membes a stake in a scholarship, it would be more interesting than just being a member of a club with plenty of money."

KADAI CHAPTER NEWS By Tsugi Takemoto

Sorry late as usual but I just got back from the mainland and after going through the mail, relized that due date ofPPP was the next day. I am still waiting for part of my luggage Found out that since Hawaii is overseas, it is not considered domestic, so we have to go inside for check-in and not the convenient outside drop-off. Some day Hawaii and Alaska will be domestic.

As we prepare for the Memorial Service on Spetember 29, our committee has been busy. As I understand it, Ben Morimoto is the general chainnan, but the committee members are hustling. This is the way it should be. Kazu Senda will be the Master of Ceremonies. Mayor Marianne Kusal<a is the guest speaker. The Rev. Yukiko Motoyoshi of the Lihue Hongwanji Mission will offer prayers.

Light refreshments will be served by the following committee: Lillian Takiguchi, Shimoe Mukai, Nonna Senda, Esther Shigeta, Ann Y otsuda, Y oshie Nishio and Matsuko Doi.

DIS & DAT HEALTH WISE By Raymond Nosaka

While being confined in the hospital, many thoughts kept going through my mind--Why and How did I come to be here in the hospital. Could it have been prevented? If so, how?

As a patient, you go through various pains and discomforts, and at times you feel that your time has come when you would be joining your deceased buddies, but then that all passes. Advancing in age does not mean w~ are hopeless-- we can still lead a healthful, useful life. Many of us will have to change our life style--by that, I mean we must discipline ourselves. Eat the right food, exercise daily, relax your mind, and all of this takes perseverence and· discipline.
