OUR CAMPAIGN2020 Women on Boards (2020WOB) is a globally recognized brand and advocate for promoting the competitive business advantage of women in the corporate board room. Founded in 2010, the campaign’s namesake year, 2020, honors the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, the women’s right to vote.

The campaign is not a membership organization, so we effectively collaborate with other organizations committed to good governance and advancing this business imperative.

Based on our 2019 Gender Diversity Index, for the first time, 20.4% women now hold board positions on the public companies within the Russell 3000. While we reached this initial milestone achievement a year sooner than expected, the campaign’s ultimate goal is gender balance.

While there still remains a gap between today’s 20% and gender balance, the 2020WOB campaign is pleased to have played an influential role in this accomplishment.

WHAT WE DOEDUCATE:Our “Get on Board!” workshops, held in ten cities every year, are intensive one-day seminars for women executives, providing personalized, strategic roadmaps and tools to navigate their careers toward corporate boards. Betsy is also a sought-after speaker and author of two books on this subject.

ADVOCATE:Using our Gender Diversity Index (GDI) research, which tracks and analyzes progress of women on boards made by the largest 3000* companies in the US, we proactively engage in outreach efforts and build relationships with alliance partners to raise public awareness and support for the campaign. The stats regarding women directors on every company board are available in our Gender Diversity Directory on our website, along with the GDI report.

COLLABORATE:More than 10,000 women and men attend our 35 Global Conversation on Board Diversity events around the globe every November to hear CEOs and corporate directors discuss the business advantage of having women on their boards. Previously known as the National Conversation on Board Diversity, this fundraising event, supported by corporate and regional partners, sustains our education programs, research and critical operations.

*The Russell 3000 Index includes the 3,000 largest US-traded stocks which represent about 98% of all US incorporated equity securities.

THE BUSINESS LANDSCAPE

Women on boards is strictly a business issue—numerous research studies demonstrate that companies perform better in profitability and productivity when they have women directors on boards.

Key findings from the 2020WOB Gender Diversity Index for 2019:• Despite reaching the 20% milestone, women hold only 5,261 board seats of the

total 25,770 directors of the Russell 3000 corporations.• 60% of the 941 female board seats added this year were new seats created by

expanding the boards, not by replacing current male directors.• 17 states, compared to only four states in 2018, now have surpassed 20%

women on boards among corporations headquartered in their states.

According to a report by Credit Suisse Research Institute, shares of companies with a market capitalization of more than $10 billion and with women board members outperformed comparable businesses with all-male boards by 26 percent worldwide over a period of six years.

INSTITUTIONAL INVESTORS and CA LAWWe need leaders to help us move the needle and make a meaningful difference. Here are some notable examples:

Along with 2020WOB, CalPERS, CalSTRS, Paradigm for Parity and 30% Coalition proactively urge CEOs to add women directors to their boards.

BlackRock, with more than $6 trillion in assets under management, announced it will vote against chairs of nominating/governance committees at boards with fewer than two women directors.

Institutional investors, including the New York State Pension Fund and State Street Global Advisors, recently announced they may vote against directors of corporations that don’t have women on their boards.

Starting in 2020, ISS will vote 'No' on the re-election of Nominating and Governance chairman if their company does not have at least one woman on their board.

On September 30, 2018, California enacted the first law in the country to require at least one woman director on every public company board headquartered in the state by December 31, 2019, and two more by 2021.

Similar legislation mandating women directors on company boards are being explored in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts, Michigan, Maryland and Illinois.

BE A ROLE MODEL FOR GENDER BALANCEHistoric change doesn’t happen overnight. Our initial effort of 20% by 2020 was a

milestone toward gender balance in the boardroom, the ultimate goal.

It takes the commitment of corporate champions, supporting the business imperative of accelerating gender balance in the boardroom, to make the goal a reality.

BECOME a GLOBAL or NATIONAL SPONSORWe commend your company for achieving at least 20% women on your board long before the Russell 3000 crossed our original 20% milestone goal! You are an example of good corporate governance. While progress is clearly being made, one-tenth of companies within the Russell 3000 companies still have NO women directors on their boards and one-third have only one. Therefore, your sponsorship powers our continued efforts.

The value of a 2020WOB sponsorship:

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION: Raises company profile as a catalyst for women in board leadership, enhancing your D&I business

strategy Demonstrates your commitment to responsible D&I practices

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT: Network with senior-level and C-suite executives at our Global Conversation on Board Diversity

events and “Get on Board!” workshops. Engage with clients and industry partners by helping them pursue corporate board seats.

BRAND & REPUTATION: Visibility within the global business community can attract talent, augmenting recruiting and

retention initiatives. Build credibility with prospective business partners and shareholders who want to align with

companies committed to advancing women.
