The Year 1066 is one of the most important in the history of Britain. Prince Edward had a lot of Royal blood in him. His father was King of England. His mother, Emma, was the sister of a Norman Duke. Edward enjoyed a care free childhood. In 1013 and 1016 the Danes attacked England. Edward’s father died, and his family ran off to Normandy. England was run by a fearless Viking called Canute. Edward’s mum is forced to marry Canute, and they have a son called Harthacanute.

In 1035 King Canute dies. Canute’s two sons argue about who should become the next King. Emma encourages Edward to return to England and claim the throne. Edward gets as far as Southampton but is forced to retreat. Edward finally claims the throne in 1042. He then marries Edith, sister of Harold Godwin in 1045. Edward and Edith fail to produce any children. But Edward decided to name a few others as his heir to the throne:-

• King Estrithson of Denmark

• Prince Edward Atheling

• Duke William of Normandy

• Harold Godwinson

On Christmas Eve 1065 Edward dies. On his deathbed Edward looked at Harold and said “I give you this Kingdom for you to protect” Harold had been named by Edward as the next person to take the throne of England. In January 6th 1066 Edward was buried, and Harold Godwinson crowned King of England. Harold’s position was not safe – the three other people Edward had named all wanted to become King of England.
