Intercessors are needed to stand in the gap for Turkey after a recent hearing on the murder of three Christians in the Eurasian country’s southeastern city of Malatya paved the way for further investigations into the connection between the fi ve defendants and unclear elements of the Turkish state linked to criminal activities.

e 13th hearing at Malatya’s ird Criminal Court on November 21, 2008 in the murders of Turkish Christians Necati Aydin and Ugur Yuksel and German Christian Tilmann Geske presented little new evidence, according to Compass Direct News. No witnesses were called to testify.

On April 18, 2007, the three Christians were tied up, stabbed and tortured for several hours before their throats were slit in what Turkish media have dubbed “the Malatya massacre” at the Zirve Publishing Co. offi ce in Malatya, Compass reported. Five Turks, who have been in jail for the past 21 months, are accused of the murder. ey are all between 19 and 21 years old.

e court prosecutor and plaintiff lawyers are pursuing proof that there are links between the murderers and Ergenekon, an ultranationalist group of retired generals, politicians, journalists and mafi a members under investigation for

conspiracy in recent murders, Compass Direct News reported.

A separate criminal investigation has linked the group to high-profi le attacks, murders and plans to engineer domestic chaos and ultimately overthrow the government. Evidence in the Malatya case indicates that a local journalist, Varol Bulent Aral, allegedly acted as a bridge between the fi ve murder suspects and Ergenekon, Compass Direct News reported.

“ is case has tremendous implications for democracy and deep-state (criminal) elements in Turkey,” said Orhan Kemal Cengiz, who Continued on page 15►

Targeted prayers are needed for ailand after the Southeast Asian country got its third prime minister

in four months on December 15, 2008, when former opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva was voted into power in a deal that many hope will end six months of political paralysis.

Abhisit, a 44-year-old economist who was born in Britain and educated at Oxford, won a parliamentary vote against former national police chief Pracha Promnok, according to the Washington Post Foreign Service (WPFS). e vote was called after Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat was removed from offi ce on December 2, 2008 by the country’s Constitutional Court, which found his party guilty of irregularities in elections held in December 2007.

Over the past few months, political mobs have become an increasingly powerful factor in ailand’s politics, WPFS reported. Violent anti-government demonstrations made it diffi cult for Wongsawat’s administration to function. e protests culminated in a

weeklong occupation of the country’s two main airports, crippling ailand’s

vital tourism industry.

Abhisit has promised a rapid disbursement of

government funds to try to revive the economy, but with tourism,

foreign direct i n v e s t m e n t and exports reeling from the double blow of a global e c o n o m i c

slowdown and domestic political turmoil, his government faces substantial challenges, WPFS reported.

Political observers have what wondered what, if anything, King Bhumibol Adulyade, 81, will do to lead ailand out of the dangerous political crisis, according to the Los Angeles Times. Revered as a demigod in ailand, Bhumibol is the world’s longest-reigning monarch. Although the king has a mostly ceremonial role under the ai Constitution, he has been called on to help resolve numerous political crises during his 62-year rule.

ailand is often promoted as the “most thoroughly Buddhist country in the world,” and the common belief that “to be ai is to be Buddhist” pervades all of ai society. According to W I N’s Praying rough e Window 9 prayer calendar, the day of prayer for ailand is on day 6.

In a signifi cant praise report, a Supreme Court judge in Egypt on November 22, 2008 granted Christian Bahia El-Sisi the right to appeal her conviction for falsifi cation of documents—a charge stemming from her offi cial papers not identifying her as a Muslim, according to Compass Direct News.

In addition, Judge Abdel Meged Mahmood on November 25 rescinded a September 23 warrant for El-Sisi’s arrest, declaring that she should be free from prison pending a fi nal decision. Mahmood is the same judge who in January 2008 freed El-Sisi’s sister, who had been convicted on the same charges of “forgery,” Compass Direct News reported.

e charges against El-Sisi and her sister, Shadia El-Sisi, claimed that their marriage certifi cates contained false information that they were Christians. Unknown to them, their religious identity offi cially changed 46 years ago due to their father’s brief conversion to Islam. e sisters are illiterate.

In the November 22 hearing granting Bahia El-Sisi the right to appeal, Mahmood noted that her marriage certifi cate made no mention of her religion, according to her lawyer.

Investigation into the sisters’ religious status began following a visit made to their father, Nagy

El-Sisi, himself in prison for forgery. Nagy El-Sisi, who had briefl y converted to Islam in 1962 before reconverting three years later, obtained a forged Christian identifi cation card because there is no offi cial means for converting from Islam in Egypt, Compass reported.

Under Shariah law, which heavily infl uences Egyptian law, the sisters are considered Muslims due to their father’s conversion. ey learned that their father had briefl y converted to Islam only recently, long after getting married, and had no idea they could offi cially be considered Muslims.

Both sisters were originally charged with forging offi cial documents and sentenced in absentia in 2000. Each was given a three-year jail sentence, Compass reported Egypt is ranked No. 19 on Open Doors’ 2008 World Watch List of nations where Christians are persecuted for their faith. PRAISEIn an answer to prayers by intercessory groups, including W I N, three Christian prisoners in Laos have been released after spending several weeks in jail, according to Compass Direct News.

Residents of Boukham village in Savannakhet province, Pastor Sompong Supatto, 32, and two other believers, Boot Chanthaleuxay and Khamvan Chanthaleuxay, both 18, were released on October 16, 2008 against the wishes of the village chief who had threatened to hand Supatto a life sentence at a maximum-security prison, Compass Direct News reported.

Human Rights Watch for Lao Religious Freedom said that village offi cials remain hostile to the presence of Christians. Authorities had arrested Supatto and four other believers on July 20 for “believing and worshiping God.”

In Laos, many local authorities have continued to persecute Christians, in part by seeking to “re-educate them.”

A Vision Concerning Korea (from the book “God Loves North Korea” by David E. Ross)

“… on February 24, 1979, God showed me a vision of the Korean peninsula. North Korea was like a hollow, very dry bone; South Korea like a large persimmon, but it was rotten. ere were dust clouds covering the DMZ. God showed that South Korea had borne much fruit, but it was rotting because Christians there were not interceding for the whole nation, especially for North Korea, whom they considered to be the enemy. God showed that Christians saw North Korea as Satan’s territory. Christians were intimidated by Satan, and did not believe that God could bring revival to the north. But God declared that even though North Korea was a

hollow, very dry bone, yet it had been the “mother” of South Korea’s fruitfulness, and that we should pray to God realizing that He is unlimited, that it is easy for Him to accomplish His purposes in North Korea. But we must pray not only asking God to send His heavenly hosts to revive North Korea, but also fi rst we must repent of our own rottenness of disobedience. en we will be emboldened to pray as Ezekiel for the Lord to put His Holy Spirit into the dry bones and bring life. en God showed me a large tree over both South and North Korea. e roots of the tree were in the sea – which is the water of the Holy Spirit – and in the land – which is the soil of the Word of God. God revealed that He would send a great revival that would encompass the entire Korean peninsula. e tree was loaded with fruit which was being shaken off into Japan, China, all over Russia particularly the eastern area, into Alaska and as far as the South Sea Islands. In recent years God has made it clear that Christians worldwide are called to intercede for His people in North Korea, and that His entire Church, both East and West, must repent of the sin of prayerlessness and begin to intercede for God’s mighty work of revival and restoration on the Korean peninsula. As the Church worldwide repents of our many sins against God’s people in Korea, both North and South, God will once again show His face to His precious people and use them mightily, as one people, in world evangelization.”Camp Luther 1998Mission, CanadaCamp Luther 1998Mission, Canada

age, Musa was sad when he thought about the many young children like him who had been hurt by evil people who just wanted to make a lot of money. Musa knew deep down in his heart, that one day, he’d grow up to make changes that would help Gambian children to live in safety and under the protection of the good leaders of his country. Musa never wanted to see one more friend mistreated or hurt ever again.
