How Clouds Form 1. Clouds of all ki nds f orm when wa ter v apor in the air becomes tiny water droplets or ice crystals. 2. The pr oces s by whic h molecules of wate r vapo r in the air bec ome liq uid wa ter is called condensation. 3. Cold air can hold less wat er vap or than warm air. As air cools, the amount of water vapor it can hold decreases. Some of the water vapor in the air condenses to form droplets of liquid water. 4. The te mper ature at which condensat ion begi ns is called the de w point . If the dew point is below the freezing point, the water vapor may change directly into ice crystals. 5. For wate r vapor t o condense , tiny par ticles must b e pre sent so th e water has a surface on which to condense. Most of these particles are salt crystals, dust from soil, and smoke. Clouds form whenever air is cooled to its dew point and particles are present.
