Age requirements:Children must be 5 years

of age on or before August 31, 2012 to be considered

for Kindergarten enrollment in the 2012-2013 school

year.

Students applying for the Montessori schools Pre-K

program student must be 4 years of age on or before August 31st in order to be

considered.

• Three (3) proofs of Mecklenburg County residency

• Safe Schools Enrollment Declaration

• Current Immunization records

CMS follows the North Carolina general statute 130A-152-157 which requires that all students Pre-K through grade 12 must present evidence that they have a completed immunization record for their grade within 30 school days of admission. Immunizations are available at the Health Department Immunization Clinic.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Students who have a language other

than English in their background or

who are not United States citizens

must register through the

International Center.

Necessary Documentation:• Verification of date of birth (such as a

certified birth certificate, passport, visa or resident alien card)

• Three (3) Proofs of Residency

• Documentation of previous educational experience

• Immunization records and social security number

SAFETY FIRST!• School bus drivers

must successfully complete a minimum of 4 days classroom training and 3 days of training on the road.

• All drivers must pass a drug screening prior to being hired.

• An extensive State and Federal criminal background check is conducted on each driver.

DID YOU KNOW?

• School buses must stop at all railroad crossings?

• School buses can not turn right on red.

• The maximum speed limit for school buses is 45 mph, in accordance with the posted speed limit.

• Students are to be at their assigned stop ten minutes prior to and ten minutes after the scheduled stop time.

The Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) includes eight key components.  It is designed to help young people grow into

healthy and productive adults by focusing on their physical, emotional, social, and educational development, kindergarten

through twelfth grade.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) DEPARTMENT

Middle and high school ESL students receive instruction in sheltered content courses such as social studies or science in addition to specially designed English language arts courses.

CMS TERMS• ABCs: The School-Based Accountability and

Management Program monitors the performance of each school in the state, using test scores and the growth in student learning from one year to the next.

• AYP: Adequate Yearly Progress, a standard for student learning calculated each year. In North Carolina, student results on state-required tests are used to calculate whether schools and groups of students have made Adequate Yearly Progress.

• EC: Exceptional Children, a designation used for students with developmental, learning or other disabilities.

CMS TERMS• EOC: End-of-Course tests. These are state tests given

each year in 10 subjects to determine if students have mastered the material in each course. Given in high schools and to some middle school students studying at advanced levels.

• ESL: English as a Second Language, a teaching program used for students whose native language is not English. Also used to describe students in the program.

• GPA: Grade point average.

• IEP: Individual Education Program. An IEP is done for each individual student in CMS to help ensure that each child gets the necessary support and instruction.

CMS TERMS• LEP: Limited English Proficiency, used to describe

students who have not yet fully mastered the English language.

• PTA/PTO: Parent-Teacher Association, Parent Teacher Organization. These are parent groups that organize at each school to help parents stay involved in children’s education.

• SAT: Scholastic Aptitude Tests. These national tests are taken by juniors and seniors in high school, and are used by many colleges to assess whether a student is ready for college-level study.
