Feathertop Yet again this has been a challenging yet very rewarding excursion for students at KTHS. The walk itself was arduous and made more so by the soar- ing temperatures. You may remember I kicked it off by talking about the snow they had before the hike; what a change a week makes! Talking to staff, students and parents this has been one of those activities that they will remember for life. Walking for 7 days up and down hills carrying a 30 kilogram pack helps everybody to bond because you are all in it together. I have to admit I was nervous about them going given the fire conditions and increasing hot weather but you cannot fault the professionalism of the staff who attended. Due to the conditions, preparations and route changes were made. Tess Demaria was in constant contact with the Rangers letting them know where they were in case they had to get out and obtaining weather and danger updates. The weather conditions were being constantly assessed and accounted for in the days walking with allowances for access to driving tracks. An awesome experience well done to everyone involved. Cambodia Last week Jessie Rose McDonald returned from Cambodia. This was a life changing experience where students from Kerang and Cohuna participated in a cultural immersion program in Cambodia visiting orphanages, helping build houses and handing out family packs. While away it gives you an appreciation of just how good we have it in Australia. I take my hat off to Jessie for having the courage to do it as the only representative from KTHS and would encourage as many Year 12’s next year to get on board. Speech Night Congratulations to all involved with our Speech Night, students, parents and staff. What a great way to acknowledge the achievements of all students at KTHS. A special mention to Jessie Rose McDonald our DUX, and all the Special Award recipients on the night. This year we added a new category which was 100% attendance and I am pleased to say four students had 100% attendance. Let’s see if we can double it for 2020. Nights like this do not just happen and I would like to acknowledge the tireless work of all staff to put the night together. Mobile Phones Reminder One of the big changes for 2020 is the Directive by the Minister of Education to ban mobile phones at all state schools. He has made this determination because of the disruptions to learning and cyber bullying. At KTHS students will be required to turn their phone off and place it in their locked lockers where it will remain for the whole day. As the phone cannot be used at school we would prefer that the phone stay at home. At KTHS we look forward to working with students and parents to make this directive happen. For any student who would like to set up their lockers prior to school the school will be open 2:00pm to 3:30pm Tuesday 28th of January First day back for students is Wednesday 29th January. Have a safe and Merry Christmas. TERM 4 Semester 2 - VOL 41 20th December, 2019 Dean Rogers, Principal “We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the Land on which our School is situated.
