Why is our Manuka Honey so good?
There are two main components of Manuka
Honey which gives it health benefits:
1. Hydrogen peroxide (HPA):
A naturally occurring antibiotic that is
found in all honey.
2. Methylglyoxal (MGO):
A powerful antibiotic compound which is
found in large quantities in Manuka Honey.
The higher the MGO rating in Manuka Honey,
the higher the level of anti-bacterial activity
in the honey, as MGO is found in the pollen
of the Manuka tree’s flowers which has a
short flowering period, it makes the
placement of hives and the timing of the
harvest crucial.
The Rating
Our Golden Treasures Manuka Honey comes
in a range of MGO levels from 5+ to 20+.
The MGO (methylglyoxal) rating is used for
measuring Manuka Honey’s strength, some
honey makers use UMF (Unique Manuka
Factor) to rate their honey. We like to use the
MGO rating number because it directly tells
you the amount of MGO in your
Golden Treasures Manuka Honey.
The unique flavour of Manuka Honey
During summer, the scent of the Manuka flower
attracts swarms of bees which produce the
Manuka Honey. It has a unique flavour profile
with a distinct earthy, herbaceous flavour
and thick silky texture, that’s of medium
sweetness and lasting taste sensation.
Enjoy the sweetness
Golden Treasures Manuka Honey can be
enjoyed straight from the jar as a premium
spread, a sweet drizzled topping or as an
accompaniment to cheese platters. Use
as part of a healthy diet and a great start
to each day, try it brewed with various
types of tea to help cleanse the stomach.
The unique location in New Zealand
From temperate sub-tropical forests to
bush clad hills and volcanic fertile
mountains, the honey is sourced from the
Northland region in New Zealand, known
as the winter-less North. Due to this warm
and sunny climate, the Manuka bush thrives
in the area, so the bees are able to produce
the honey’s unique flavour characteristics.
FAQ’s
What is Manuka Honey?
Manuka Honey is a unique type of honey
that comes from the Manuka flower nectar
gathered by the bees in New Zealand. The
Manuka shrub is native to New Zealand,
and has a very short annual bloom making
it rare and highly sought after.
How can I tell this is 100%
authentic Manuka Honey?
We are aware of the supply of counterfeit
Manuka Honey for sale in some markets. We
take great care to source our honey from
bee-keepers who have high standards and
strict control of their hives, where each variety
& batch can be traced back to a unique
floral source and region.
Why is Manuka Honey more
expensive than other honeys?
To obtain pure Manuka Honey is quite a
unique task for bee-keepers. It is generally
more difficult to extract because of the
remote locations the hives are placed in,
but also that it has a limited harvest period
and can only be collected at certain times of
the year. The unique properties of Manuka
Honey are well understood by consumers
across the world, which creates a continually
high level of demand for this natural and
delicious New Zealand honey
How can I store it?
When storing the honey, keep it out of direct
sunlight and away from high temperatures.
Sometimes honey can naturally crystallise,
especially in colder climates. It’s still fine
to eat and if you place it in a warm spot
it will soften the crystallised granules and
return it to a smooth texture.
Can I use it in my cooking?
Great for glazing to get that delicious crispy
texture, or as a natural preservative for
pickles and sauces. It is also ideal for using in
cakes and baking to retain moisture and add
a rich touch of colour. Most of all,
Manuka Honey is much loved for its rich,
complex bitter-sweet flavour that adds
another dimension to food. Remember that
when using honey in a recipe, go easy
because it’s sweeter than sugar.
How do you harvest it?
The best Manuka Honey is found in the most
remote locations across New Zealand. When
our dedicated team of bee-keepers access
these areas to harvest the honey, they take
lots of care to ensure minimal impact on
the environment.
Some brands refer to UMF,
and some refer to MGO,
what’s the difference?
Some honey producers use UMF (Unique
Manuka Factor) to grade their honey. The
UMF rating takes into account the honey’s
concentration of DHA (dihydroxyacetone),
Methylglyoxal and Leptosperin. Others
prefer to use the MGO rating number,
because it’s directly proportional to the
amount of methylglyoxal in the honey. We
use MGO to grade our honey, and batch test
to guarantee the level of MGO in every jar.
