The first O’Flaherty Irish Music Retreat was first held on October 30-31, 2004, in Richardson, Texas, attended by more than 140 students of all ages for the purpose of learning traditional Irish music. Many of the tunes that were learned then and will be learned at future retreats are published in this tunebook. Historically, Irish music is passed down from generation to generation, but in Texas, there haven’t been many players of an older generation fulfilling that call, with the exception of Jim O’Flaherty. Jim was born in Listowel, Ireland and came to America at the age of 18. He played the tinwhistle, flute, concertina, fiddle and the uilleann pipes. An airline pilot, Jim had 10 children, all of whom played musical instruments, and he was careful to teach the music of his homeland. Living with his family near Denton, Texas, Jim’s home regularly became a place where beginning Irish players gathered for potluck and the sharing of tunes. His “sessions” were always eagerly anticipated and served to unite the traditional Irish music community in North Texas. Many of the tunes that were played at Jim’s sessions fill these pages. This is the second printing of the tunebook and various corrections have been made. It has also been re-formatted to display the tunes in alphabetical order like our second tunebook. I again want to thank the people who were instrumental in publishing this tunebook. Rick Roberts searched far and wide in cyberspace for the initial tune settings and prepared the music for printing. Kevin Alewine provided chords for all of the tunes with a mission to keep it simple. Emily Bryant did the cover and many other graphic contributions for our retreat. Marius Donnelly of Trinity Hall Restaurant & Pub funded the printing. And lastly, I want to thank the many players who have taught or shared a tune with my wife Peggy and me in our years of playing. This is really their book. The O’Flaherty Irish Music Retreat is produced by the Traditional Irish Music Education Society (TIMES), a non-profit corporation based in Richardson, Texas. The organization’s purpose is to be a resource for those wanting to learn and play traditional Irish music, and there are many programs in the works to accomplish its mission. In our area, we finally have the makings of that wonderful tradition of passing on the music of Ireland to new generations. The legacy of Jim O’Flaherty is found in that continuing tradition within our retreat and our organization and in these pages. May this music we love serve you well.
