The primary conclusions of the original paper wereA
1# The multidimensional and interdependent nature of IS success
re$uires careful attention to the denition and measurement of each
aspect of this dependent ariable# It is important to measure the
possible interactions among the success dimensions in order to isolatethe e%ect of arious independent ariables with one or more of these
dependent success dimensions#2# Selection of success dimensions and measures should be contingent on
the obBecties and contet of the empirical inestigation; but, where
possible, tested and proen measures should be used#+# Despite the multidimensional and contingent nature of IS success, an
attempt should be made to reduce signicantly the number of
di%erent measures used to measure IS success so that research
results can be compared and ndings alidated# 4# More eld study research should inestigate and incorporate
organiational impact measures#C# ?inally, 5/t0his success model clearly needs further deelopment and

Jrocess Kersus Lausal Models
The D&M IS success taonomy and its si success categories are based on
a process model of IS /4+0# In addition, we argue that the si dimensions
are interrelated, result- ing in a success model that indicates that
causality 6ows in the same direction as the information process# Foweer,
citing an earlier paper by >ewman and (obey /+C0, Seddon argues that
5the boes and arrows in ariance- and process-model diagrams represent
$uite di%erent concepts and cannot be combined meaningfully in one
model# # # # @nfortunately, combining ariance and process models is
eactly what /De.one and Mc.ean hae0 attempted to do5 /4!0# Seddon
further argues that De.one and Mc.ean hae 5attempted to combine both
process and causal eplanations of IS success in their model# =fterworing with this model for some years, it has become apparent that the
inclusion of both ariance and process interpretations in their model leads
to so many potentially confusing meanings5 /4!, p# 24!0# Seddon goes on
to propose a respecied ariance model of IS success#
D & M IS taksonomi keberhasilan dan enam kategori keberhasilannya didasarkan

System @se as a Success Measure
Seddon /4!0 further argues for the remoal of 5system use5 as a success
ariable in the causal success model, claiming that use is a behaior,
appropriate for inclusion in a process model but not in a causal model# Fe
argues that use must precede impacts and benets, but it does not cause
them# 'e disagree# 'e beliee that system usage is an appropriate
measure of success in most cases# The problem to date has been a too
simplistic denition of this comple ariable# Simply saying that more use
will yield more benets, without considering the nature of this use, is
clearly insu:cient# (esearchers must also consider the nature, etent,
$uality, and appropriateness of the system use# The nature of system use
could be addressed by determining whether the full functionality of a
system is being used for the intended purposes# oung and 3enamati /C90,for eample, suggest that full functional use of an e-commerce system
should include informational use, transactional use, and customer serice
use# 'ith regard to the etent of use, .assila and 3rancheau /20 identify
arious states of systems utiliation based on the use or nonuse of basic
and adanced system capabilities# Simply measuring the amount of time a
system is used does not properly capture the relationship between usage
and the realiation of epected results# Gn the other hand, it can be
argued that declining usage may be an important indication that the
anticipated benets are not being realied# The reBection of system use as
a success ariable when system usage is mandatory is also 6awed for the
reasons cited aboe# en when use is re$uired, ariability in the $uality
and intensity of this use is liely to hae a signicant impact on the
realiation of the system benets# ?urthermore, no system use is totally
mandatory# =t some leel of the organiation, an eecutie or
management committee has chosen to implement a system and re$uire
employees to use it# Thus, whereas usage of a system may be mandatory
at one leel, the continued adoption and use of the system itself may be
wholly oluntary, based upon management Budgment, at a higher leel#
Management always has the option of discontinuing a system that is not
proiding the desired results and benets# System usage continues to be
used as a dependent ariable in a number of empirical studies andcontinues to be deeloped and tested by IS researchers /11, 12, 14, 1H,
1, +", 4, 4", C2, C4, H!0# System use has taen on new importance in e-
commerce success measurements where customer use is oluntary and

si%at, lingkup, kualitas, dan ketepatan penggunaan sistem# Si%at penggunaan sistem

3ased on our reiew of the research eperience of the last decade, we
draw the following conclusionsA
1 # Many empirical studies hae alidated the original model and its
interrelation- ships, whereas other studies hae recommended
enhancements to the original model# 3ased on these contributions, we
propose an updated D&M IS Success Model to sere as a foundation for
the positioning and comparing of IS empirical research# The model should
continue to be tested and challenged# The changes introduced in this
paper are eamples of this continued growth and renement# 'e
encourage others to Boin in this e%ort#
2# The updated D&M IS Success Model is a useful model for deelopingcomprehensie e-commerce success measures as demonstrated in Table
1 #
+# 'e recommend that 5serice $uality5 be added as an important
dimension of IS success gien the importance of IS support, especially in
the e-commerce enironment where customer serice is crucial#
4# The comple, multidimensional, and interdependent nature of IS
success re- $uires careful attention to the denition and measurement of
each dimension of this dependent ariable# It is important to measure the
possible interactions among these success dimensions in order to isolatethe e%ect of arious independent ariables with one or more of these
dependent success dimensions# The updated D&M IS Success Model in
?igure + presents the interdependent relationships that should continue
to be considered and tested#
C#
H# Despite the multidimensional and contingent nature of IS success, an
attempt should be made to reduce signicantly the number of measures
used to mea- sure IS success so that research results can be compared
and ndings ali- dated# Some good progress has been made in this areaas noted in the Measurement nhancements section of this paper# 'here
