Basic Requirements of Making SoapAt Home

● 100 % sodium hydroxide commonlycalled lye in crystal form

● Stainless steel utensils, ceramicbowls and ladles and woodenspoons

● A pint and quart canning jar formeasurements

● Old newspapers for protecting yoursurfaces

● Stainless steel thermometer tomeasure temperatures of lye andadditives

● An old towel for wrapping themolds

Let’s start with a simple yet refreshinghandmade mint soap recipe. You willneed the following ingredients:

● About 4 ounces or 113 grams ofAvocado Oil

● Close to 24 ounces or 700 grams ofCoconut Oil

● Around 28 ounces or 800 grams ofOlive Oil

● You can also add about 2 ounces or60 grams or Shea or Mango Butter

● 255 grams of lye (sodiumhydroxide)

● More than 500 grams of fresh mintpaste or you can use min-infusedwater or mint tea

Cover your work area with oldnewspapers. Put on your glovesand measure the water and thelye. Try to keep them in the ratio2:1 (water to lye). Slowly pour thelye into the water while stirringand standing back to avoid anyfumes. Now allow the lye to sitdown as the water starts to clearup.

Now add all your oils together inthe pint jar and heat them up to atemperature of about 120degrees in a microwave. You canalso use a shallow pan filled withwater and put the pint containingthe oils in it to heat them.

Next step is to wait for both thelye and the oils to cool down to atemperature between 95° and105°. Pour the heated oils intoyour mixing bowl and startadding the lye slowly whilestirring it to mix everything well.

Keep on stirring by hand until themixture lightens in color andbecomes thicker in consistency. Itwill soon be at “trace” and thenadd your herbs and otheradditions such as oatmeal,cinnamon, and of course mintpaste or min-infused water, etc.

Stir the mix thoroughly untileverything is combined and pourit into mold(s).

The next step is to cover the moldwith plastic and set the wholething in an old towel. Cover it upnicely to trap in the residual heatso that the saponification processconverts the base ingredients intosoap.

Let the molds rest for about 24 to48 hours. Soon the mixture will becompletely solidified. You canthen take it out of the mold andcut your soap out in pieces. Allowit to cure for about a month andthen you are done. Start usingyour handmade soap as youwould any other soap.
