Picture: DAVID MARSHALL DILIGENT AND PROFESSIONAL Stacy Thomas OVER the past 12 months, Jen Clissold has compiled 307 police reports, eight in- telligence reports, arrested 39 offenders and laid 69 charges for offences. It is these statistics which have earned her the title of Mt Druitt Police Officer of the Year for 2012. Graduating from the Goulburn Police Academy, Constable Clissold arrived at the Mt Druitt Local Area Command in May 2008. Crime manager Brendan Bayliss said Constable Clis- sold was a highly motivated, keen, diligent and pro- fessional police officer. Since arriving at Mt Druitt, she has been recog- nised for her good police work and praised by people for recovering stolen prop- erty and providing com- passion when needed. The big awards night was held last Wednesday at Rooty Hill RSL Club, spon- sored by the Rotary Club of Mt Druitt. Both Mt Druitt and Quakers Hill police sta- tions nominated 13 officers. All received a pendant as recognition for their nomi- nation and the overall win- ner from each station was handed the annual Police Officer Shield. Let us know at: mtdruittstandard.com.au A MIXTURE of teaching methods gave year 3 students at Bennett Rd Pub- lic School an extra edge in last year’s NAPLAN test. 2011 results place the school above average for year 3 persuasive writing. It was the first time per- suasive writing was tested. Year 3 teacher Joerine Thomas and her colleague Chris Moss focused on de- veloping the specific skills tested in the exam. Mrs Thomas said the students were involved in practical exercises to de- velop persuasive writing skills. ‘‘We did a lot of debating and had a lot of discussions,’’ she said. ‘‘We tried to link persuas- ive writing to other areas like science and HSIE. ‘‘We took the students to the national park and gave them writing tasks about what animals they think should be in the park.’’ Mrs Thomas also devel- oped students’ ability to spot persuasive text and what clues to look for. Principal Matthew Plum- mer said both he and the community were happy with the students’ results. ‘‘I want to congratulate the teachers in preparing the students for improve- ment,’’ he said.
