Buy a large and savage looking dog. Take the dog everywherewith you and people won't approach you. Hell, most of them won't evenstay on the same side of the street when I go out for a walk. Also protectsthe car from being stolen and the house from being burgled. When hebarks, he does this long, rolling growl thing that sounds like a volcanoclearing its throat and causes people to back away instantly. His face putspeople off even though he's actually a big softy.

The dog doesn't even have to be particularly viciouslooking as long as it behaves as if it's vicious when the situationcalls for it. I had a border collie, a medium sized breed, who wasfriendly with everyone. Yet one day, when a repairman I had calledto check out the heating system came to my home, sheimmediately placed herself between me and the man, leaving agood 10 feet between us. She growled in an alarming manner andthe man turned and departed quickly. This was during a time in LosAngeles that a rapist was preying on women at home alone. I haveno clue whether or not this man had harmful intent but the oddest

no clue whether or not this man had harmful intent but the oddestthing is that this was the one and only time in her almost 18 yearsof life she ever reacted like that to anyone!

That is how the Doberman gained fame in the early 1970'swith the tough guy wanna-be's (thanks to James Bond moviestoo). Turns out to be one of the big softy, or big soft heartedbreeds they've ever made. Maybe scary looking to most, but a verygood dog for the kids. As long as you teach the kids not to hit themand that goes for every breed.

Yes! Dobies are big softies alright. If one doesn't have theears and tail docked they even look like softies, pretty dogs with adecidedly Pointer appearance about them.

Remember Daniel Van Dam? Taken from her bedroom and killed. What is it that is those type of guys problem? Is it a very tiny 'unit' thatthey are ashamed of showing a grown woman? There is no absolutesafety while at home.

I don't think this particular book speaks directly to thatcase but it does to many similar kinds of cases, as well as the justplain terrible acts of man, Why They Kill by Richard Rhodes. Abehavioral scientist, who deals exclusively with killers, LonnieAthens spent his entire adult life figuring out why these guys actthe way they do. It's a fascinating read and ought to be read byanyone fascinated by the deeply flawed souls and minds of thoseamong us who kill, rape, torture, and deliberately cause untoldamounts of pain to so many.

#2 is poorly researched or phony. In 1988 there was no suchanimal as Caller ID. I remember being one of the first to get it in my part ofOhio and that was in 1995 or 1996.

No, they definitely had caller id in Florida in 1988. BothGTE and Southern Bell offered caller ID by the early 80's. A quickGoogle search will confirm it.

However, Diane Augat went missing in 1998, not 1988 so itreally doesn't matter.

In 1987, Bell Atlantic (now Verizon Communications)conducted another market trial in Hudson County, New Jersey, which was followed by limited deployment. BellSouth was the firstcompany to deploy caller ID in December 1988 in Memphis,Tennessee, with a full deployment to its nine-state region over the next four years. Bell Atlantic was the second local telephone company todeploy Caller ID in New Jersey's Hudson County. US WestCommunications (now Qwest/CenturyLink) was the third localtelephone company to offer caller ID service in 1989.

We see that a lot here lately...dates seem not to matter to alot of list authors, nor does fact checking of any kind. A perfectexample was a "lady disappears from boat in the Gulf" story a fewmonths ago which 20 of us debunked in ten minutes simply byGoogling the original newspaper accounts.

quantity has taken over quality to some degree on this site,i've been here for a long time (commenting recently much morethan ever) and it's slipped. lists used to be long with two or moreparagraphs (by that i'm talking about an actual written paragraphnot 5-6 sentences like in high school) with detail and information.as i once read here the idea behind listverse is that the site andlists are supposed to inform and spur on your own research intothe things on the list. it's accomplishing this goal in a very negativeway, with a major focus being bad humor, something whichfortunately has declined lately as well in the lists.

Perhaps it's just poor editing and not poor researching asthe name is a hyperlink to the article dated in 2000 states 1998.Either way, they really should double check their work or have anextra set of eyes look at it before putting it out there.

agree, dunno how long you've been part of the site (as acommenter/reader) but it didn't used to be quite like this. i meanthis is a small dent in a list, no doubt an honest mistake, but thereason everyone's so quick to get on it is because quality nose-dived.

As others have said, caller ID was available in the late 80's.What you are thinking of was the federal fight against everyonegetting it by default without the option not to have it. You do havethe *67 *69 etc tools at your fingertips. I really do not know whatthe problem is. You do not need to answer every unknown callerand let the machine help you screen them. You can always pick itup, or walk away. There is the National "Do not call" list you canopt into. I have not, and the fact that I never enter my REALtelephone number for any web sites fill in forms, may havesomething to do with the few calls that do make it to my number.

Listverse already has a list of bizarre disappearances. It was done byJamie Frater in 2007 and features several male disappearances, along with acampsite of hippies and an entire village. It's worth reading and really weird.

What is so "baffling" about #9? The woman I assume got sick of her life and left, and it's not like she is going to go empty-handed, she took a few valuables with her. AndI think she left the wedding rings as a sign of "we are done". If she was kidnapped, everything valuable would have gone..

Still pretty weird that she left her kids and I mean there is divorce....noneed to freak everybody out by fading to black.

Want to say that to women who have been abused by theirhusbands? Sometimes it's just better to fade, than stay and be abused.

I don't know what a battered woman goes through. Icouldn't imagine in being in such a predicament, however if I was, Iwould take my children with me. One, for strength and for two tomake sure they're in safe hands because its more than likely that ifhe's an abusive husband, he's an abusive father. Under nocircumstances would I abandon my child. So it's better to let yourkids suffer alone?

I've never been in an abusive relationship, so I don't haveany idea what a battered woman goes through either (for therecord, I'm a woman). I did not say anything about the 'kids', did I?Of course you should not leave your kids, in most cases. However, sometimes it's not the kids being abused, and are left alone.Circumstances aren't the same in every case. I do know that mostabused women do not have means to take care of the familyfinancially or literally have nowhere to go, which means taking thekids isn't always feasible...

Couldn't you pretty much say that about half of these? What about the
