Tape Attachment – Data Flow

Application program Issues Commands - Read / write

Tape device driver makes hardware unique modifications to the command issued by the application – acts as a translator between the device and programs that use the device – Also provides device unique functions or Vendor unique functions ie CPF, DPF and load balancing

Host Bus Adapter (HBA) I/O adapter – sits between the host computer’s bus and the SCSI/SAS or Fibre. Converts commands into electronic signals as well as offloading processing from the Server. Performs low-level interface functions automatically or with minimal processor involvement.

Tape Media - Format

Servo bands for head positioningData bands

• Each data band has many data tracks• Data tracks laid out in serpentine pattern• Tape head spans a single data band

Data read/write• Multiple tracks read or written in parallel • Written data immediately read/verified • Move entire length of tape over a set of tracks,

then head moves to next set of tracks, and tape reverses direction and move in the opposite direction

Tecnologia IBM no drives LTO ( igual 3592 Enterprise)

fita

− LTO4: 6 velocidades− LTO5: 14 velocidades

Read after Write verification• Disponibilidade da informação

Compression can be done within the tape deviceStreaming Lossless Data Compression (SLDC) At block level, writes compressed data only if smallerCompressed data is verified to ensure data integrity

Benefit #1: Reduces cost by using fewer cartridges(e.g. LTO5 holds 3TB compressed vs 1.5TB native)

Benefit #2: Improves performance

User environment► HH drives are designed for small to medium workload requirements and those with space constraints► FH drives are designed for medium to large customers with robust workloads

The HH has the same native data transfer rate as the FH ► Data rate is up to 140MB/sec native for LTO5 drives► Data transfer rate is considered to be just one element of the ‘performance’ characteristic► Overall job productivity is typically a combination of a number of factors including tape drive characteristics, data type,

compression, connection type, host bus adapter, application, server, disk

Drive performance differentiators exist between IBM FH LTO and HH LTO drives:

Tape Library Performance

High Density (HD) Frames• Manage much more information at the same pace• Minimal impact to Tier 0 &1 mount rate• Impact to Tier 2 & beyond minimized by caching

algorithms−Cartridge cache using single-deep tier for quick access−Deeper slots with least frequently used data

• Frame operation optimization−Shuffling of cartridges and open slots to optimize access−Load balance keeps HD slots filled to a minimum tier level

until tier is full across the library

Capacity on Demand• Default activation of three tiers of slots (Tiers 0, 1, 2)

Page 54: 10 - BtS 2013 Tape Open V1

IBM System Storage

© 2013 IBM CorporationThis document is for IBM and IBM Business Partner use only

Green – requer menos recursos ambientais – Energia

• TCO = Power, Cooling. Floor Space, Maintenance

Long Term – melhor tecnologia para Long Term Archive

Secure – Criptografia e WORM

Page 55: 10 - BtS 2013 Tape Open V1

Por que fita ?

Fita é confiável• A tecnologia do drive e cartucho é feita para longo prazo e a automação limita o

contato humano• A tecnologia hoje possui gerenciamento proativo

“The single biggest advantage is that tape is continuing to get faster. Disk has been stuck at 15,000 RPM for over a decade. If we look at LTO as an example in the tape industry, it has gotten progressively faster with each iteration.” George Crump Information Week March 5, 2012

http://informationweek.com/news/storage/systems/232601957?queryText=tape

Page 56: 10 - BtS 2013 Tape Open V1

Cartuchos 3592 JB tiveram taxa menor

Por que fita IBM ?

1. Market Share

2. Technologia comprovada em campo

–Os produtos disponibilizados no mercado acompanham roadmap e histórico

3. IBM tem liderado TCO e o melhor GREEN

–Menor TCA em drives, automação e virtualização

–Maior granularidade em crescimento (30 slots >= 20,000)

–Capacidade virtual OnDemand

–Drives e Libraries (TS1140 requer 51W vs 67W

(24W standby mode)
