Loads on Snatch BlocksThe stress on a snatch block varies with the degree of anglebetween the lead and load lines. When the two lines are parallel,1000kg on the lead line results in a load of 2000kg on the hook.As the angle between the lines increases, the stress on the hookis reduced as illustrated below.
To determine the stress on a hook, multiply the pull on the leadline by a suitable factor from the following table adding 10% forfriction.

SHEAVE & SNATCH BLOCKS
Sheave and snatch blocks are designed to deflect a loaded wirerope when a change in direction is required for a particularapplication or to increase the line pull or lifting capacity of a hoistor winch by multiplying the number of parts of line.
A sheave or snatch block usually consists of side plates, sheaveand a head fitting or lower lifting fitting. These blocks areavailable in a wide variety of configurations and numerous sheavecombinations.
Sheave BlocksA sheave block refers to a block in which the side plates are fixedaround the sheave or sheaves and the rope cannot be placed intothe block at any point along its length. Sheave blocks, exceptsnatch blocks, can only be reeved by feeding the end of the ropethrough the block. This type of block is most commonly used withwire rope in crane fall blocks. Sheave blocks and crane fall blocksoften have numerous sheaves depending on the craneconfiguration.
Snatch BlocksA snatch block usually only has one or two sheaves and is usedmore as a lifting accessory with wire rope slings or as a means ofincreasing line pull in a winching application as opposed to anintegral part of a crane as is often the case with sheave blocks.The main feature common to snatch blocks is that the side platesopen to allow the block to be placed on a wire rope at any pointin a winching application or to allow wire rope slings to be placedinto the block as in most circumstances it is impractical to feed awire rope sling through a sheave block.
General InformationWorking Load Limit (WLL) is the maximum load, which may beapplied to the head fitting in normal conditions of use as definedin Australian Standard 1418. This shall be not greater than thevalue determined by means of the appropriate formula.

Inspection Before UseWhen inspecting a block attention should be paid to the followingparts, check for wear, cracks, nicks, gouges, excessive corrosionand correct operation of moving parts.
The pre-use inspection for a snatch or sheave block shouldinclude the following:
1. The head fitting nut must be checked to ensure it is properlyengaged into its retaining nut to the full depth, the thread islocked and the R clip is fitted correctly.
2. Look for wear on pins, axles, rope grooves, side plates,bushes/bearings and fittings. Excessive wear may be a causeto replace parts or remove the block from service, 10% wearis the maximum permissible.
3. Look for deformation and distortion in side plates, pins andaxles, fitting attachment points, trunnions etc. Deformationcan be caused by abusive service, overload, heat or impropermodification. Deformation is cause for further inspection andwill most likely require that the block be removed fromservice.
4. Look for wobble or misalignment in sheaves. These symptomsmay mean that bearings require replacement or axles aredamaged and are cause for further inspection. Also look andlisten for grinding when the sheave is rotated.
5. Always ensure that all nuts bolts, scotch keys, cotter pins,keeper plates, R clips and other locking methods are secure.Particularly after any disassembly for inspection.
6. Check that the sheave axle does not turn. This may mean theaxle bearing has seized or been damaged and/or the keepingmethod is damaged or loose.
7. Check for excessive free play between the eyebolt (or hookshank) and the bow. Check for radial and longitudinal freeplay. Excessive free-play is a sign of wear.
8. Look for deformation or corrosion in threads and look forcracks or corrosion in welds as these may dangerously weakenthe block - any crack is cause to withdraw a block fromservice.
9. Check the hook and latch for any sign of deformation.Deformed hooks are a sign of overloading which may weakenthe hook. Replacement latches are available.
Care In UseRatings or Working Load Limits (WLL) shown in Nobles literatureand stamped onto sheave blocks apply to new or as new conditionproducts. The WLL can be affected by intentional alterations,damage, corrosion, misuse and special conditions of use. Alwayshave your block regularly inspected by a competent person whomay suggest repairs or condemn your blocks.
Shock loading can greatly increase the actual loads placed on ablock and must be taken into account when selecting sheaveblock systems. The WLL that applies for any Nobles block appliesto the head fitting load (unless stated otherwise). It is importantto calculate the actual load experienced by the whole block inorder to determine the head fitting load. The angles at which lines enter and exit a block and the number of parts of line in thesystem can dramatically amplify the affect of a particular lineload.
Sheave blocks must always be correctly selected and fitted forevery lift. Side loading must be prevented, always check thathooks are properly seated and loads are not supported by safetycatches.
Never weld any part of a block without consulting Nobles. Specialsteels are commonly used and special welding procedures andprecautions are necessary.
Special ConditionsUnless stated otherwise Nobles sheave blocks as standard aredesigned in accordance with AS 2089. They are intended forgeneral lifting purposes. Special conditions in use includingenvironmental conditions, chemical exposure, explosiveatmospheres, marine environments, personnel lifting, shockloading and tilt wall lifting etc. can greatly influence the life andsuitability of a particular block. Always seek advice on thesuitability of your sheave blocks. Demanding applications andenvironments may shorten the inspection intervals of your blockand may affect the WLL.
MaintenanceSheave blocks and snatch blocks must be regularly inspected andmaintained for peak efficiency and extended usefulness.
As with all lifting equipment sheave and snatch blocksshould be inspected before each use.
The frequency of lubrication is dependent upon frequency andperiods of use, environmental conditions and the user's goodjudgment.
LubricationThe frequency of lubrication depends upon the frequency andperiod of product use as well as environmental conditions.Assuming normal product use the following greasing schedule is suggested.
Sheave Bearings:• Ball bearings - every 24hrs continuous operation or every
14 days intermittent operation.• Double row roller bearings - every 40 hours of continuous
operation or every 30 days of intermittent operation.• Bronze and “GARMAX” bushes - Bronze bushes every 8 hours
of continuous operation or 14 days of intermittent operation.Most Nobles blocks are fitted with superior “GARMAX” bushes,which are self-lubricating at low loads. Where grease nipplesare fitted these bushes should be greased at the same rate asfor bronze bushes.
Head fitting bearings:• Roller or ball thrust bearings - Every 14 days for frequent
swiveling or 45 days for infrequent swiveling.• Bronze thrust washers - Every 16 hours of use or 21 days
if rarely swiveling.Sheave block maintenance also depends upon proper blockselection, reeving and consideration of loading and adverseconditions.

Does my Block have a Head Fitting thatcan swivel under load?Many blocks have head fittings that can swivel. Thestandard issue head fitting in most cases is not fitted witha thrust bearing of any kind. These swivel head fittingsare designed to allow alignment and proper positioning ofblocks during take up only. Do not intentionally swivel aload about a head fitting without a proper bearing, theresult will increase wear and possible unscrewing anddetaching of the head fitting under load. To check for thepresence of a thrust bearing simply look between the bowand the head fitting nut. A roller bearing should beobvious if a bearing is present. If you are in any doubtcall Nobles quoting the test number and we can make adetermination based on our records.

Orders For Sheaves Should Specify

2. Diameter & Type of Rope:Fibre or Wire Rope. For minimum sheave root diameters referto AS 2089.
3. Sheave Grooves
Sheaves should be grooved to the nominal rope diameter plusan allowance of between 7% and 15% to allow for ropemanufacturing tolerances and should be re-machined whenworn to nominal diameter plus 3%. Sheaves must also be freefrom score marks, run freely and be true.
4. Types of Bushing
Plain Bores• Nobles Plain Bore Sheaves can be equipped with bushings or
bearings at an optional charge.• Cast Steel, Cast Iron, Machined Steel Plate and Nylon sheaves
are all available.Plain Bore Sheaves can be used for very low line speeds and veryinfrequent use (high bearing friction).
Bronze BushesSelf Lubricating Bronze Bushings for slow line speeds andinfrequent use (moderate bearing friction). Bronze Bushing withpressure lubrication for slow line speeds, and more frequent useat greater loads (moderate bearing friction). Our Bronze Bushingsare machined with oil grooves.
Taper Roller BearingsTaper Roller Bearings are required for faster line speeds and morefrequent use at greater loads.
Double Row Cylindrical Roller BearingsThese are specially designed for sheave applications having goodload bearing ratings and stability. Other Anti friction bearings suchas tapered roller bearings and deep groove ball bearings can besupplied.
PTFE Lined BushesThese bearings have a high load capacity (140 Mpa) and low wearrates as well as excellent lubricating properties. Sheave Dimensions for Sheave BlocksThe Australian Standards AS 2089 and AS 1418 require that theratio of the diameter at the bottom of the groove of sheaves, tothe nominal size of the rope, shall not be less than:
1. For use with fibre ropes - 5 times rope diameter.2. For use with wire ropes - M1 Classification - 11.5 times rope

Engineered and manufactured by Nobles to suit heavy duty liftingapplications, these sheaves are cast from our patterns and thenmachined with groove detail.
The NES/NMD sheaves suit smaller loads and ropes. The NSB/NHC series of sheaves are machined in quantity fromstructural steel plate, have PTFE bushes and are hot dippedgalvanised.

ANCHOR FAIRLEADERS
Nobles Anchor Fairleaders are made of high quality materials andare built tough to withstand the breaking load of the nominatedrope at all orientations. Specifications including base plates andsurface finish can be altered to suit installation requirements. We can custom design anchor fairleaders to suit any normal ropediameter.
Nobles Anchor Fairleaders feature:• Handling lug for easy installation
• Galvanised sheaves that can be hardened on request
• SL04 sealed sheave bearings
• Pivoting head with hardened side plates
• Rounded lip bead to ensure longer rope life
• Sealed greased housing with heavy duty tapered roller bearings
available. Surface finishes can also be specified at the time ofenquiry. A rope guard is supplied to prevent slack ropes fromleaving the sheave, which can be mounted in 3 different positions.400-15 SG iron is used as standard for sheaves, and grade 250steel for the frame. Other materials available for higher strengthand wear applications.

SBS SWIVELS
Nobles SBS Swivels are a rugged and relatively compact liftingdevice incorporating a roller thrust bearing which is containedwithin a greasable chamber at the centre. The bearing is betterprotected from the elements than other designs and permits easyrotation under load.
SealingSealing is achieved by an O-ring at one end and a seal at theother (type varies with size).
Jaw BoltsJaw bolts are retained with a nut and split pin for safety andadded strength.
Care in UseSBS Swivels form an important component in lifting systemswhere loads must be swivelled under load. They are also usedwhere parts of a lifting system must be protected from inducedtorques by being able to freely rotate.
SBS Swivels are for use in lifting situations appropriate to the AS 2318. They are not for use in high speed or continuousrotation applications such as being in-line with rotating machinery.The recommended duty cycle of SBS Swivels should beconsidered equivalent to M3 classification. Custom designs can beproduced for heavy duty applications.
General CautionsRatings or Working Load Limits (WLL) shown in Nobles literatureand stamped onto swivels apply only to new or as new conditionproducts. The working load limit can be affected by intentionalalterations, damage, corrosion, misuse and special conditions ofuse. Always have your swivels regularly inspected by a competentperson who may suggest repairs or condemn your swivels.
Shock loading can greatly increase the actual loads placed on aswivel and must be taken into account when selecting swivelsystems.
The WLL that applies to any Nobles swivel is only for the use of the device for general purpose lifts as defined in AS 1418 (M3 classification) in accordance with safe practice and Noblesrecommendations. For all uses of swivels a risk assessmentshould be performed to analyse potential hazards. Where usersintend using swivels for unconventional tasks these should beassessed in detail by a competent person.
For each lift always assess the strength and integrity of the loaditself. Attention must be paid to the balance and security of theload.
Never weld any part of a swivel without consulting Nobles. Special steels are commonly used and special welding proceduresand precautions may be necessary.
