Today we are going to talk about storage. Hopefully when we reach the end of our lesson, you will be able to make the most of the space that you have for the storage of your things.

Is clutter a problem in your home? Convenient, flexible storage doesn’t just happen. It requires careful planning.

The first step in improving your home storage is to consider your family’s needs. Space for each family member’s clothing and favorite things should be provided.

It can be as easy as learning your ABCs.

¿Es un problema el desorden en tu casa? Almacenar de una manera efícaz no es fácil. Esto necesita una planeación cuidadosa.

The first step in improving your home storage is to make an inventory of the items to be stored.

It helps to list what items need to be stored in each room of the house.

El primer paso para mejorar el almacenamiento en su casa es hacer un inventario de las cosas que necesitan ser guardadas.

Second, study the storage space you have available.

Third, compare the inventory to the space available.

If possessions don’t fit, the options are:

Making the best use of storage space means determining where items need to be stored to be used most conveniently.

- Store items that are used most often in the most accessible place

- Store items at point of their first use

If storage space is limited, it may be necessary to make some decisions about whether items no longer in use ought to be sold or given away, or at least stored away from the main living area.

The “2-year rule” is a good general guide: If you haven’t used, or at least taken an item out of storage for 2 years or two seasons, give serious consideration to disposing of it.

Si el espacio de almacenamiento es limitado, tal vez será necesario decidir qué cosas ya no se usan para venderlas o regalarlas, o al menos guardarlas en un lugar menos usado.

Once you know exactly what you need to store and have organized the best you can, you may still need to add storage space.

Your creativity can help you find storage solutions that are economical.

You can find ideas and solutions to storage problems in home magazines and catalogs as well as furniture stores, lumber and hardware stores, and home improvement centers.

A third option for storage is to either buy or build the storage systems needed.

Storage units may be either wall mounted or freestanding.

Whether you purchase units or build or have them built depends on skill, family budget and time available.

Simple shelving units can be built out of 3’ or 4’ long, 1 X 8 boards and bricks or concrete blocks.

One advantage of this type shelving is that it is portable and you can easily take it with you if you move.

The boards can be sanded and stained, painted, or covered with a washable contact paper.

Se pueden construir estantes sencillos con 3 o 4 pies (.9 o 1.2m) de longitud con tablas de 1 X 8 pulgadas (2.5cm X 20cm) y tabiques o bloques de concreto.

Another way to add shelf space is to purchase brackets and mount the brackets on the wall.

A 1 x 8 or 1 X 12 board then becomes the shelf. These should be added at a higher location on the wall where small children can not reach them. The board could be painted or stained as you desire.

If you have a storage space that is too tall, you can add a secondary shelf so that you can store shorter items on the base level and then taller items on the higher level.

If you need additional hanging space or more accessible hanging space, there are several ways to accomplish this. One is to purchase wire hangers for a rod. Another way is to make your own wire extenders out of a medium gauge wire.

Measure your space for the length of rod you will need. Measure the distance needed between the rods. Then cut your wire so that you have ample length for securing it around the rod.

Si necesita más espacio para colgar o quiere hacer el espacio más accesible, hay varias maneras de lograrlo. Una es comprar ganchos de alambre para colgarlos en una barra. Otra manera es hacer sus propios tendederos con alambre de calibre mediano.

A more complex way to get an additional rod or an adjustable rod is to cut a piece of wood so that it will have notches for the rod to fit into at different levels. You must cut a board for each side of the closet and then make sure your measurement for the length of the rod is accurate. If you are simply adding a second rod, measure and match the original rod.

This storage unit can be utilized as a shelf unit or a drawer unit for under a bed. If to be used under a bed, add casters.

This shelving unit requires only a sheet of ¾” plywood 4 X 4 feet, finishing nails & glue. Saw the plywood into 3, 16” sections. Two sections will support the shelves. Cut six triangles out of the other section as shown. Then nail and glue pieces together to make shelves.

Use cardboard boxes or apple crates to build a moveable closet. You will have a rod for hanging clothes and shelves for storing folded clothes. Braces across the back are important to stabilize the structure.
