Lithography
LithographyBased on the principle that water & oil don't mix the writer & playwright Alois Senefelder invented the printing technique lithography.
The Planographic process was revolutionary for its time as it didn't rely on the matrix having physical properties. Instead the image is created on a smooth stone using Crayons or Tushe(Greasy substatute). The grease causes a chemical reaction with the limestone changing it into a hydrophobic surface.
From the onset the technique was associated with commercial applicai-tion such as repoductition of musical scores

Its easy to see when the process took hold of Europe. The Belle Époque "Beautiful Era" an exciting time. With new technologies & medical discoveries throughout the 1800’s it was a time of optimism and excitement. Before lithography bring text and image together was a difficult process involving relief printing techniques. The development of using 3 stones allowed artist and designers create every colour of the rainbow.
From the 1860 to WWI Lithgraphy had seen great sucess as a process in both the art world and advertising. Proaganda during the first and second world world helped shape the design we know today.
