Laboratory Research Classes ラボ・リサーチクラス
* Faculty of Medicine Course Course Title: Receptor and Reaction Course Instructor: YANAGITA Toshihiko, NEMOTO Takayuki Four students who came from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine visited our laboratory. After the simple lectures about receptor and its signaling, the four students performed experiments of western blotting and immunostaining, using primary cultured adrenal medullary cells and hippocampal neurons. The students observed the variations of phosphorylation in the receptor signaling, and the expression of protein. In front of the computer monitor showing the results of their experiments, the great variety of discussion has been exchanged actively. Because they asked some interesting or accurate questions about experimental results, we were impressed with their single-minded perspective to the research. We believe that they enjoyed the research, and look forward to meeting again. 医学部ラボ・リサーチコース 担当科目:受容体と反応 担当講師:柳田俊彦、根本隆行 今回、上海交通大学医学院より4名の学生が医学部薬理学教室を訪れました。彼らには、

*Course Instructor: SEKITO Tomoo, Faculty of Engineering Course Title: Environmental Protection Technology for Solid Waste Management
and Waste Water Treatment
From July 16 to 31, 2013, Ms. Anja Pajntar from University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, joined our laboratory as an UOM summer program student to study about solid waste management and waste water treatment. We provided two kinds of learning experiences. The first program was a learning of method to measure environmental quality. We took water samples from a waste water treatment facility near the campus and the river water along the facility. We measured chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen and total organic carbon concentrations in the water samples. After the experiment, we discussed about the importance of the determination of organic concentration in environmental water and the effect of the organic materials on ecological system. As a second program, we provided an excursion to three solid waste management facilities and one waste water treatment facility in Miyazaki. We learned a very advanced and comprehensive MSW treatment method at Eco Clean Plaza Miyazaki and a kitchen waste recycling method at Kunitomi composting plant. At Takajo-cho closed landfill site, we learned a very unique final disposal technique which can control water supply to the waste. From this excursion program, the student learned typical Japanese environmental protection technologies. On the final day of the program, Ms. Anja gave a presentation about solid waste management situation in her country and an introduction of Slovenia. After the presentation, we had open question and answer time with the students in my laboratory. Additionally, because the subject of Ms. Anja is Chemical Engineering, we made a study tour to Dr. Baba's laboratory and Dr. Shiomori's laboratory in Department of Applied Chemistry. I hope she could learn some ideas to complete her thesis in her university from this tour. During the program our laboratory students supported her very well. They made a party for her at a restaurant near the campus and enjoyed Miyazaki's specialty of foods and drinks. We also took her to a hot spring. This program provides a good opportunity for young students to communicate with people of different cultures. I hope Ms. Anja and my students make use of this experience to take interest in international activity in future.
*Course Instructor: Prof. ITAMI Toshiaki, Faculty of Agriculture Course Title: Fish and Shrimp Health Management
Mr. Nutt Nuntapong (second year of doctor course student) was the sixth student to accommodate in my lab from Prince of Songkla University, so we could discuss about the details of his research subject beforehand and have finally completed our training successfully with high quality. In the course of this program, he obtained the new technique for biotechnology. For the future collaboration, I feel that we need to research on the needs of PSU to broaden and enhance our partnership through this program, welcoming more students to UOM. Our master course students will see him this coming December in PSU as a student exchange program between PSU and UOM supported by UOM and Faculty of Agriculture. *Course Instructor: Assoc. Prof. TASUMI Masahiro, Faculty of Agriculture Course Title: Crop water requirement for irrigated agriculture
We invited Ms. Bunya Chindawong from Thailand to our laboratory as a part of her “summer program”. Bunya is a master course student of the Prince of Songkla University, studying soil engineering. She selected to join with our laboratory to study crop water requirement. During her stay in my laboratory, we enjoyed studying the
theory and applications of crop water requirement. As a progress of the study, now she can estimate crop water requirements for many different crops in the world using local meteorological data. In addition to the lecture in the laboratory, we had chances to visit two research sites where one of our colleagues have conducted his hydrologic research. Throughout the field trips, she studied about agricultural water management in Japan and some experiment methodologies of hydrologic research. In weekends, she had variety of experiences including home-stay and danced in a big festival with international friends as parts of the summer program. During her stay in my laboratory, she made friends including her tutor Ms. Kana Ishihara. It was a very good experience for us to study with her. I hope it was also good experience for her and hope we find a chance to see each other in future.
*Course Instructor: Assoc. Prof. OHNO Kazuro, Faculty of Agriculture Course Title: Safer food and safer agriculture
Dear Ms. Tian Ainan from Nanjing University, China. I am writing this report, in the form of a letter to you. Thank you for joining us. You enjoyed spending time with my laboratory students, didn’t you? Was the summer program too short or good enough to learn something about Japan and agriculture? You might be surprised with whatever you experienced here in UOM. Unfortunately this summer was too hot for you and for us to work in vegetable fields. Through joining work and research in our experimental fields supported by local farmers, you came to know how hard farmers and students work. We have developed safer agriculture to produce safer food. As I told you, we have always thought about environmentally safer pest management on farm level. Very small and fine pests damage vegetables, and make the product unmarketable. You might be surprised to learn how frequently farmers must spray vegetables with pesticides to produce unblemished and marketable agricultural products. I taught you about Biointesive-IPM and Biological control for pest management as a strategy to reduce pesticide input into agricultural land. I have to apologize to you for using many English academic jargons to explain environmentally safer agriculture and pest management. However, you watched many indigenous natural enemies in our vegetable fields. Insectary plant’s flowers attract good bugs to vegetable fields, leading to a good control of pests through natural regulation. You might also learn that GAP (good agricultural practices) is requisite for producing safer food. We would be very glad if you could realize that Conservation Biological Control is a key technology to prompt environmentally safer agriculture for farmers, consumers, and wildlife.
*Course Instructor: Prof. AKASHI Ryo, Faculty of Agriculture Course Title: Biotechnology and Plant Genetic Resources
In this year, we accommodated three students from Prince of Songkla University. We discussed about details of their research subjects on the first and second days, thereafter they learned about flow cytometry for estimation of genome size and microsatellite analysis for evaluation of progenies. They kept their good attitudes and worked with eagerness in the laboratory. I hope to hearing from them about achieved works in their university. They are a little shy especially for conversation in English, but at the end of this program, they have established close relations with our tutors. Additively, all of them continuously attended the training program on the conservation, management and use of genetic resources, which is a part of the summer program, from 5th to 29th August. So they totally stayed in Miyazaki for 7 weeks. The program was a little hard but they certainly acquired a lot of things. Also, they have been friendly getting along with Japanese, Korean and Indonesian students and actively exchanging their ideas. The friendship among them has deepened for sure through the summer program.
