Wireless Trondheimas a research area

• TrT Access (or ”Broadband commons”) – A wireless network in Trondheim city for ”everyone” (initial user groups

covers: NTNU, The County, The City administration Trondheim, The Electric Power Company of the town and Adressa the dominant regional newspaper). This gives a potential aggregated number of users in the range 40 to 50 000 (includes all students at the univ. and all high school students).

• TrT Network lab – A full-sized outdoor lab suitable for testing new networking technologies.

• TrT Service Lab– A lab for mobile service development and testing.

TrT Network lab Infra structure

• Physical Infra structure– Broadbands connections (Gb/s, fiber og Cat5+ kabel).

• NB: TrT Network lab has its own communincation links(not shared by TrT Access)

– Power Supply, – Mounting facilities and (agreements with property owners!)– Climatic safe housing for experimental equipment, etc.

• Preinstalled servers and experimental equipment– Measuring equipment– Programmable routers and access points – Servers to facilitate research, e.g a location server

TrT Network lab as a research test bed for radio systems and

mobile services Novel radio systems and technologies

• Antenna systems and implementation of MIMO ( Multiple input/output systems)

• Advanced modulation methods/systems

• Product design, cost efficient esthetical design and integration with other equipment along roads and streets.

Novel systems solutions in wireless access networks

• Seamless handover between heterogeneous systems.

• Prioritised handling of emergency calls (and other important traffic) - testing of principles to be utilised for crisis management.

• Pilot testing of new principles to ensure quality of service,, information security and correct payment/charging..

• Principles of location determination and navigation, possibilities of comparing technologies..

TrT Network Lab as a research area for Intelligent Transport Systems

PROJECT EXAMPLES:

• Testing of the technology platform for ITS (6 th. framework project “Cooperative Vehicle-Infrastructure System project”, ref. IST-2004-2.4.12-eSafety-Cooperative Systems for Road Transport)

• Instrumentation for– Measuring environmental data g

– Alerts/events or incident reporting

• Cooperative driving/traffic behaviour

• Prioritising public transport and emergency vehicles, adjusting the traffic lights according to traffic patterns, and events, etc.

• ISA (Intelligent Speed Adaptation) technology testing the impact on drivers and traffic..

• CALM/WLAN design combined with road light plant
