The ratio of Archaeological Fieldwork to Professional

Experience allowed• For Single-honours Archaeology students, 10 days out of the

20 days must comprise archaeological fieldwork. The remaining 10 days can consist of professional experience, if so desired. If you wish you can do 20 days of archaeological fieldwork. You cannot do more than 10 days of other professional experience unless you have a medical condition or disability (see next page)

• For Joint-honours students, 5 days out of the 10 days must comprise archaeological fieldwork. The remaining 5 days can consist of professional experience, if so desired. If you wish you can do 10 days of archaeological fieldwork. You cannot do more than 5 days of other professional experience unless you have a medical condition or disability (see next page)

Medical Conditions/Disability

• If you have a medical condition or a disability that renders you unable to undertake the full scope of activities associated with archaeological fieldwork, then adjustments will be made to allow you to participate in Department-run excavations/surveys, where possible.

• Alternatively, after consultation with the Fieldwork Officer (Prof. Andrew Poulter), you can undertake 20 days (Single honours) or 10 days (Joint honours) of other professional experience.

• All fieldwork is initially assessed on a pass/fail basis (from 2011/2012 onwards)

• Fieldwork is assessed by the Project Director, who will be required to indicate whether you have met the required standard on the project

• If you do not meet the required standard the fieldwork will not count towards your degree requirements

• The fieldwork director should complete a Director’s Fieldwork Assessment Form at the end of your fieldwork/professional experience and approve it on a pass/fail basis

• Director’s Fieldwork Assessment Forms are available via the Department web pages and enclosed in your fieldwork pack

• If you are a Single Honours student, your fieldwork will also be assessed by coursework (see next page)

A portion of your Fieldwork is assessed as part of V62203 (Portfolio 1) in the autumn semester of year 2. It is worth 50% of the final mark. The exact submission date will be provided by the module convenor at the start of the semester.

This assessment system requires that you complete at least 10 fieldwork days during the summer between years 1 & 2

The assessment comprises:

a. Fieldwork notebook (to be written while on fieldwork)

b. A 1000 word summary of the project.

More details of the contents of these elements are given on the next two slides

1. Field notebook

This should include;

- aims and methods of the project

- daily learning/activity log

- illustrations (which can contribute to portfolio)

- ‘scholarly’ evaluation of the project

- self-evaluation

- field experience record (summary)

The notebook used should have a minimum page size of A5. A further guide to the contents of the notebook is included in the 1st year field work pack

2. 1000 word summary of the project

This should include;

- the wider context of the project

- the aims and methods of the project

- a ‘scholarly’ evaluation of the project

This summary should be a word processed document and should include references and bibliography as appropriate. See the Fieldwork guide in the 1st year fieldwork pack and look at other site reports for ideas on the sort of information that might be included.

RISK ASSESSMENT & APPROVAL for Fieldwork Projects:

• Check with fieldwork officer (Prof. Andrew Poulter) for initial approval of any project not on the approved list.

• Obtain Risk Assessment form available from the Departmental web pages (under fieldwork announcements heading).

• Send the form to the Director of your fieldwork project. Ask the Director to fill this in and return it to you a.s.a.p.

• Take completed form to Mr David Taylor for approval as Departmental Safety officer. Your risk assessment must be approved BEFORE you depart for the project. If it is not approved then the fieldwork which you undertake has no association with your degree programme or the University of Nottingham.

• You are not allowed to participate in a project in a country which is deemed unsafe by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Even if a country was deemed safe when you planned a project, once it is deemed unsafe (even on the day you planned to depart) you cannot use that project as part of your University of Nottingham fieldwork requirement and the University has no responsibility for your safety in these circumstances. You must check the safety of a Country on the day of your departure

• When trying to arrange to participate in projects abroad, you may not get approval for some projects outside the European Union, North America or Australia/New Zealand. It is imperative to check with Prof. Andrew Poulter that your project conforms to University requirements

• In some cases, even though countries are safe today, they do have the legacy of modern warfare in their landscapes (northern, France, Germany, Flanders, Slovenia, Poland, the Czech Republic, parts of Italy). There will be the expectation that there is a condition in the risk assessment which states that you will have a safety induction on how to recognise munitions and avoid them if the Director identifies ordnance as a risk in the risk assessment.

• This is true even in the British Isles – especially in Kent!

Key Things to Remember

• If you have a food allergy, then you must tell your Fieldwork Director before they fill in the risk assessment form, and they must make clear the measures taken to ensure your safety in the risk assessment.

• If you have had a severe/allergic reaction to bites/stings of ants, bees, wasps, hornets, horsefly in the past, you must tell Prof. Andrew Poulter and Mr David Taylor and you must tell your Fieldwork Director before they fill in the risk assessment form. It is expected that measures will be in place to counter anaphylactic shock (extreme allergic reactions to insect bites/stings which can result in death within 30 minutes, without an adrenalin injection).

• If you have any medical condition which can put you at risk (long or short term), you must inform the Department Safety officer (Mr David Taylor) and you must inform your fieldwork Director before he/she fills in the Risk Assessment form, so that control measures can be placed in the document

• It is your responsibility to inform the Fieldwork Director and Department Safety Officer.

• The Director’s Report Form must be completed and signed by the Director of your excavation/survey, and you should get them to complete and sign this form before you leave the project.

• The Director’s Report must then be handed in to the Taught Courses Office (by Friday 4th May 2012 for those undertaking fieldwork at Easter 2012; or by 30th November 2012, following fieldwork over the summer 2012), with all subsistence reimbursement documentation and receipts as discussed below

• The Student Evaluation of Fieldwork Project Form for your evaluation of the field project should be handed in at the same time

When you have finished your Fieldwork

1. Exceptionally for a British archaeology department, Nottingham offers a contribution towards your costs during the fieldwork requirement of the course.

2. The Department will offer up to a fixed daily sum of £13.00 per day for fieldwork completed in the Summer of 2011/2012 to reimburse fieldwork costs (training fees, subsistence & some travel) when accompanied by receipts

3. The allowance is a maximum, if you spend over this allowance you will not be reimbursed for the overspend. This allowance does NOT include a contribution to airfares for those working abroad.

If participating in a Departmental Project, this allowance (or an element of it) may well be taken directly by the project to cover accommodation costs or similar. Please check with the project organisers.

You will not be able to claim additional costs for a Departmental Excavation that has already been funded by the Department.

• In order to claim this subsistence contribution, you MUST present receipts (rail/bus tickets, food receipts etc.), your completed Director’s Report Form, and

• an appropriate completed ‘Non Staff Expenses Claim Form’ (available via the departmental website http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/archaeology/current/fieldwork.aspx)

• to the Taught Courses Office by Friday 4th May 2012 for those undertaking fieldwork at Easter 2012; or by 30th November 2012, following fieldwork over the summer 2012

• Without these receipts and the Director’s Report Form, you will not receive the contribution towards your fieldwork costs.
