Golden (Eastern) Gate• The entrance is sealed at the Golden Gate in Jerusalem. In Jesus

day this was the most important gate in Jerusalem because it led to the holy place of the Temple. Christians proclaimed that Jesus would come a second time and enter Jerusalem through that gate. So Moslem leader Saladin had it sealed in 1187. As you can see, it is sealed to this day.

Casting of Lots

• A way of making decisions in Bible times, similar to drawing straws or casting a pair of dice to determine what course or direction to follow. The word lots occurs 70 times in the Old Testament and seven in the New Testament. Most of the occurrences were in the early period when little of the Bible was available and when God apparently approved of this means for determining His will.

• The practice occurs most often in connection with the division of the land under Joshua (Joshua 14-21), a procedure that God directed several times in the Book of Numbers (Numbers 26:55; 33:54; 34:13; 36:2).

• Various offices and functions in the Temple were also determined by lot (1 Chronicles 24:5,31; 25:8-9; 26:13-14).

• The sailors on Jonah's ship (Jonah 1:7) also cast lots to determine who had brought God's wrath upon their ship.

• Only once in the New Testament did the casting of lots happen with God's approval. This occurred in the selection of Matthias to fill the spot vacated by Judas among the apostles (Acts 1:26).

• In spite of the many references to casting lots in the Old Testament, nothing is known about the actual lots themselves. They could have been sticks of various lengths, flat stones like coins, or some kind of dice; but their exact nature is unknown.
