Christmas Thank-Yous; New Sound; New Gates; Hope for 2021
Christmas Thank-Yous. As we end the Christmas Season this
weekend, I want to thank everyone who made the Sea-son special for
our parish. That includes all who gave ‘Giving Tree Gifts’ or
Christmas Baskets or purchased poinsettias for deceased loved ones;
all who decorated the Church (inside and outside); all our servers,
Eucharistic Ministers, lectors, musicians and ushers; and all who
gave gifts to Fr. Thien and me. A special thanks to Wanda Do-novan
for keeping all those poinsettias watered and beauti-ful. We
greatly appreciate everyone who made the celebra-tion of Christmas
so blessed.
Sound System Upgrade in Church. Our Church Sound Sys-tem
received an upgrade right before Christmas. We pur-chased new sound
equipment and new microphones, and they have made a world of
difference in terms of sound clarity and consistency. The sound no
longer cuts in and out in that oh-so-annoying way. A debt of
gratitude goes to C.J. Rowden, our Facilities Manager, for
orchestrating the system upgrade. Thanks also to our parishioners
whose regular offertory giving and ‘I Give Catholic’ donations
enabled us to do the upgrade. We finally can check this item off
our To-Do list!
New Gates on Campus. The two iron gates into the School Yard are
in bad shape after years of being opened and closed on a daily
basis – and after being struck by cars en-tering or exiting the
school yard. The gates are extremely difficult to open and close
due to damage. Replacing the gates is on our checklist of campus
upgrades. We have two bids for new gates and are in the process of
getting a third bid, after which we will choose a contractor for
the project and start the work. We again thank our loyal
contributors for the funds needed to address this facility issue.
Hope for 2021. We hope your 2021 is off to a good start. We hope
and pray that the new Covid vaccine will begin to curb the impact
of the virus on our world. Wishing you God’s blessings and peace in
the New Year.
Fr. Joe
SUNDAY, JANUARY 10, 2021 THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
“This is my Beloved Son” Mk 1:7-11
Why did Jesus, the Sinless One, submit himself to baptism by His
cousin John? In this humble submission, we see a foreshadowing of
His "baptism" by blood on the cross. Jesus’ baptism by John with
water was the ac-ceptance and beginning of His mission as God's
suffering Servant. Though sinless, Jesus allowed himself to be
num-bered among sinners. He submitted himself entirely to His
Father's will. Out of love, He consented to baptism for the
remission of our sins.
At Jesus’ baptism, the Father proclaimed his de-light in His Son
and spoke these words: “You are my be-loved Son; in you I am well
pleased.” The Holy Spirit also was present at Jesus’ baptism and
anointed Jesus for minis-try in the waters of the Jordan River. As
Jesus was being baptized the Holy Spirit sanctified the waters of
His bap-tism, signifying a new beginning to creation.
When each of us is baptized — similar to Jesus — the Holy Spirit
descends upon us and fills us with the light and grace of God,
anointing us for our mission as disciples of Jesus. The Father
makes the identical pronouncement about us as He made about Jesus:
“You are my beloved Son. You are my beloved daughter. In you I am
well pleased.” At baptism, we gain a new identity as beloved
children of God.
As we celebrate the Lord’s baptism, may we recog-nize the
tremendous love of God, the anointing that we received in baptism,
and the call to be faithful disciples of Jesus, bringing light,
grace and peace into our world.
Lord Jesus, stir up in us the gifts of the Holy Sprit that we
received at our baptism so that we may be your faithful servants
and witnesses in this world.

Church Reopening Guidelines +Governor’s Directive. The current
Reopening Guidelines allow us to have 230 people in Church per
mass. Once that capacity is reached, we can’t allow any more at
mass. +Dispensation Continues. The Dispensation from Sunday Mass
remains; a Weekday Mass fulfills the Sunday obligation.
+Videotaping of Weekday/Weekend Masses Continues. +Entry through
Any Door of Church; Seating at Mass. For weekday mass, choose a pew
and stay 6 feet away from everybody else. For weekend Mass, ushers
will direct you to a pew that fits your group. +Social Distancing
Requirements at Mass: Please stay 6 feet apart from others in
Church unless you are with a group; sanitize your hands immediately
before Communion; receive Communion in the hand – open your hand
flat and let the minister ‘drop’ the host into your hand; no
physical contact at the sign of peace unless you are with a group;
please don’t hang out in church before or after Mass; you MUST wear
a facial covering (mask or shield) at all Masses, by order of the
Governor, Jefferson Parish President and our Archbishop.
Is it moral to take the new Covid Vaccine if it is connected to
a line of aborted fetus cells? The Vatican’s Congregation for the
Doctrine of the Faith tackles this question in a new document
entitled, “Note on the morality of using some anti-Covid-19
vaccines.” You can read the full document at:
https://press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/it/bollettino/pubblico/2020/12/21/0681/01591.html.
The Congregation concludes that the vaccines are mor-ally
acceptable because of a “remote” connection to aborted fetus cells
and the gravity of the Covid health crisis. The document is short
and worth the read. Let us know if you have questions after reading
it.
CONFIRMATION PREPARATION REMINDERS This Sunday is the Rite of
Enrollment for Confirmation students during the 6pm Mass. Class

additional details. Reminder - reports on the Sponsor, Saint and

of Religious Education (834-0348) for more info.
