Apprenticeships

Another training route available to those wishing to work in the hair and beauty industry is an apprenticeship.

As well as a standard apprenticeship there are two other kinds: advanced and young apprenticeships.

Do you know how these three kinds of apprenticeship differ?

This is a means of gaining an NVQ or another work-based qualification and a way to develop other vocational skills.

Apprentices are employed by a hair and beauty business, but will often go to college to receive further training.

College-based qualification

Colleges and schools offer a wide range of hair and beauty courses, ranging from introductory ones to VRQs and NVQs.

Longer courses such as foundation degrees are also offered by some universities and colleges of higher education.

After this, opportunities to study hair and beauty to a higher level include:

honours degree

master’s degree

doctorate.

Why might some people prefer a college-based rather than a work-based training route?
