1. Turn to this next fresh page in your notebook (or draw a line underneath yesterday’s work).

2. Write the title “THE 5 A’S” and label it lesson #3.

The 5 A’s

Geographers use the 5 A’s to examine spatial relationships.

Page 6: 1. Objective (READ) SWBAT identify the 5 A’s of spatial analysis. 2. Question of the Day.

The 5 A’s – Background

• Paris Hilton asked you to help plan her family’s next Hilton Hotel.

• It will be built in Hawaii.

• The more money they make from the hotel in the first year, the more money you get paid.

Page 7: 1. Objective (READ) SWBAT identify the 5 A’s of spatial analysis. 2. Question of the Day.

How do we do it?

• The process - geographers analyze spatial relationships to look for patterns and trends.

• To do this you must use the 5 A’s:

Ask Acquire Analyze Arrange Apply COPY

Page 9: 1. Objective (READ) SWBAT identify the 5 A’s of spatial analysis. 2. Question of the Day.

1. ASK – First, geographers ASK questions to help them make decisions and solve problems.

– Key Question: Where should the hotel be

located?– What is the economy like?– How often do the volcanoes erupt?

– Task Come up with 2 more questions that a geographer might ask in our hotel situation.

• Write them in your notebook under your notes.

Page 10: 1. Objective (READ) SWBAT identify the 5 A’s of spatial analysis. 2. Question of the Day.

2. Acquire – 2nd, geographers go find the answer to the questions they asked.

Example:– To learn about the economy in the area…

A) they find the location of their competition (other hotels)

B) figure out what kind of hotels are in the area

C) get data on how many tourists visit the island

D) what about insurance, shark bites?

Task – Come up with fake answers to the 2 questions you wrote underneath #1 - Ask. Write them beneath #2 – Acquire.

Locations of hotels in the area.

Where are most of the hotels located on our island?

- The North, South, East, or West

Page 12: 1. Objective (READ) SWBAT identify the 5 A’s of spatial analysis. 2. Question of the Day.

3. Analyze – 3rd, geographers analyze their findings and the answers to the questions– What does the data say or mean?– Is it good or bad?

COPY BOXExamples:

- Tons of hotels in the area = GOOD or BAD

- Volcanoes in the area = GOOD OR BAD

- The area is in the path of hurricanes (typhoons) = GOOD or BAD

- Millions of tourists come to Hawaii every year = GOOD or BAD

- The weather is tropical and warm with much vegetation = GOOD or BAD

Locations of hotels in the area.

Where is the best place to put a hotel so far?

- The North, South, East, West, or Center

BEACHES

4. Arrange – 4th, geographers arrange the data so that it is easy to read and interpret.– Put data into charts, graphs, tables,

presentations

5. Apply - Finally, they make their decisions and apply them to the project (make it happen).

– Build the hotel in the best possible area– Goal is to maximize profits (make the most $

$)

Task –

1. Write where you think we should build the hotel (N, S, E, W, or C) in your notebook underneath #5 – Apply.

2. Explain your decision.

Page 19: 1. Objective (READ) SWBAT identify the 5 A’s of spatial analysis. 2. Question of the Day.

Your turn…

• Develop a plan using the 5 A’s to convince your family to buy you one of the following items: IPhone, PS3, 61’ HDTV, stereo system, IPOD, car, or dirtbike.

• Explain each step of the 5 A process and how you intend to persuade your parents.

Page 20: 1. Objective (READ) SWBAT identify the 5 A’s of spatial analysis. 2. Question of the Day.

5 A’s Assignment - Help/Directions

1. Ask – Come up with questions that you will need to convince your family to buy you the present. What will they need to know?

2. Acquire – What would you need to do to find the answer to the questions you came up with in #1? Write in fake answers to the questions you had in #1.

3. Analyze – Are the fake answers positive (good) or negative (bad)?

4. Arrange – Create a chart, graph, map, etc. to show the information you gathered. Remember your goal is to convince your family to buy you a big present.

5. Apply – What is the conclusion? Do you think you will get the present? Why or why not?
