Limitations of Monitoring System and State Information

• Clusters can’t be monitored.

• Monitor the connector state particularly if you are monitoring a server in another routing group.

• A running server doesn’t mean a healthy database.

• If the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant and Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine aren’t running, the state information may not be accurate.

• Gateway connectors are always marked as being in an UP state.

• Don’t use older versions of Exchange monitors on Exchange 2000 Server

Backup Strategies for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

Page 21: 1 Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Maintenance and Troubleshooting System Maintenance and Monitoring Database Operation and Maintenance Backup, Restore,

21

Backup Considerations

• Back up system state information.

• Consider installing Exchange 2000 Server on a domain controller.

• Verify database backups.

Page 22: 1 Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Maintenance and Troubleshooting System Maintenance and Monitoring Database Operation and Maintenance Backup, Restore,

22

Disaster Recovery Considerations

• Build and maintain a recovery server.

• Perform test recoveries.

• Design a recovery plan.

• Design a recovery kit.

23

Restoring to the Same Server

• Configuring a hard recovery

• Performing a manual hard recovery

• Recovering multiple databases in the same storage group

Page 24: 1 Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Maintenance and Troubleshooting System Maintenance and Monitoring Database Operation and Maintenance Backup, Restore,

24

Complete Disaster Recovery

• Reinstall the operating system.

• Reinstall the system state information.

• Run Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Setup in /DisasterRecovery mode.

• Restore all database files.

• Reboot the server and test your recovery.

25

Replacing the Server’s Hardware

• Forklifting mailboxes

• Moving mailboxes and public folders

Page 26: 1 Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Maintenance and Troubleshooting System Maintenance and Monitoring Database Operation and Maintenance Backup, Restore,

26

Restoring to a Different Server (Not Recommended)

• Each mailbox-enabled user has a unique msExchMailboxGuid.

• Each mailbox-enabled user can be associated with only one mailbox.

• Only one copy of an Exchange database can exist in the forest.

• Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) profiles may need to be manually updated.

27

High-Speed Recovery with Delayed Restore

• Prepare the recovery server.

• Reconnect the mailboxes.

• Retrieve and play back data.
