Secondary MICE Target

•Actuator & electronics (almost) completed & tested in Sheffield – 50,000 pulses.•To RAL 13th February and re-assembled in R78.

Unusual pulse-to-pulse variation. Failed after ~600 pulses. One coil (of 24) found shorted to ground & burnt out.

• Internal ground not connected in Sheffield test! Spare stator installed New welded seals at Daresbury last week Brought back to RAL immediately (untested.)

• All electronics now at RAL. Problems still exist so has now be taken back to Sheffield

for further investigation. – see talk by Andy Nichols for latest news

N.B. Stator currently in ISIS had done >2M pulses ok.•Future – investigating better quality insulation (double layer?) with manufacturer. •Need new QA procedures for coil insulation.

Linde refrigeration

•Spec:- 66W @ 4K (56Wsolenoid +

10Wtransfer) In November we saw about 51W + 10W

• Managed to cool decay solenoid to ~20K– Ran out of time, not cooling

• Problem ‘traced’ to missing insulators Jan 08, a reduction to 47W + 10W

• Problem now believed to be turbines– Evidence of carbon / graphite dust– Bearing failure?

• Turbines due back last week• Engineer ready to re-fit & re-test

We trust that this the end of the problem. Scaffolding built around decay solenoid Gas rack and piping ready Need access to DSA and permission to

dismantle transfer line. DeMaCo will return to re-install transfer

line into DSA 17th March.

Finances

•EU: Transnational Access application as part of EUCARD Submitted 22/2/2008 Unlikely to deliver much money because of over-subscription. Most common view is that the result will not justify the effort

involved!•STFC:

N. McCubbin/J. Womersley agreed £20k/yr to help collaborators from ‘less-favoured nations’ come to RAL for MICE

• N.McCubbin holds the budget•Common Fund

The Common Fund questionnaires have been sent to University / Funding agency representatives

• Replies received from all and invoices being sent (£3k/PhD) Collaboration Board has agreed a document outlining the uses

to which the Common Fund can be put. Need formally to agree scope of Common Fund with STFC P.M. working within STFC to complete agreements with

relevant ‘officers’

22

Overview of funding for MICE Phase II•US:

Significant increase in support from DOE and NSF last (this) FY has advanced procurement of items for Phase II (cavities, coupling coils)

Strongly positive review from MuTAC Some concern that present budget problems may have an impact

•Japan: Bid for funding for MICE to be submitted Some optimism about likely outcome expressed

•China: Will fabricate CC in collaboration with NFMCC Funding from HIST granted for construction: No travel support

•Switzerland: GVA: Support for DAQ, trigger, ToF PMTs and personnel.

Through Sofia also support for PId electronics and personnel Now seeking support for contribution to SW CERN: RF amplifier refurbishment: nearing completion

•Italy: 5 institutes INFN NTA approval for MICE now granted; resources for ToF0,1,KL

released Great tenacity and resourcefulness: ….so long without these resources

•UK: STFC budget problems likely to imply non-optimal funding profile for

Phase II Consequence is delay in steps IV and V

26

MICE Commissioning Plans•Need to complete work before the first dip of the MICE target•These include (but not limited to):-

Complete power supply and magnet services (water/electrical/interlocks)

Certification of power supplies. Direct checks on klixons and validation of magnet klixon interlock

circuits. Full magnet circuit polarity checks. Full power soak tests - particularly for dipole 1, and field at saturation. Positioning of beam profile monitors & available MICE PIDs. Installation of MICE hall radiation monitors. Opening of MICE target gate-valve.

•Some of the above need access to the ISIS synchrotron or DSA. •Once hardware is enabled and ISIS has given permission:•The main steps for these systems are given below:-1. Target

Target out of beam:- Pre-activation & basic radiation measurements. Target pulsing out of beam to rehearse operations. ie. synchronisation

with ISIS signals, position stability, control etc. Insertion of target:- Shallow dip: above checks & beam loss reproducibility. Insert towards nominal depth or loss limit. Determine loss versus depth. Crude production measurements & post activation/radiation

measurements..

Page 27: 1 MICE Report to the Oversight Committee February 2008 Ken Long, Andy Nichols and Richard Apsimon 25th Feb 2008 MICE Phase 1 Status MICE Phase 2 Overview.

27

MICE Commissioning Plans

2. Beamline•The beamline will be switched on in stages. It is planned to use settings which are optimised for protons initially due to the high rates….. first opportunity to:-

Exercise the beamline detector systems & beamline slow controls. Make comparison with the beamline physics model to isolate errors Make more refined estimates of protons on target to extrapolate to

final muon rates.•This requires the following steps:-

Dipoles on. Set basic horizontal alignment. Measure vertical alignment of target & beamline, set to optimum. Confirm action of quadrupoles 1-3, and setup as design. Find horizontal alignment of the downstream beamline with Q4-6. Confirm action of quadrupoles 4-6, and setup as design. Estimate protons on target using Ckov a&b & beamline monitors

•Radiation surveys in the MICE hall will be completed during the process.•Some of this work will be revisited to commission decay solenoid and the final triplet elements Q7-9.•We may also attempt to maximise the flux or measure the effect of vertical target/beamline misalignments on the optics.

Page 28: 1 MICE Report to the Oversight Committee February 2008 Ken Long, Andy Nichols and Richard Apsimon 25th Feb 2008 MICE Phase 1 Status MICE Phase 2 Overview.

28

MICE Commissioning Plans

3. MICE PID calibration & particle production.•Beams requested for the MICE PIDs for calibration and commissioning purposes.

(i) beams with high electron content – in the region of 50-100MeV/c (ii) beams of positive or negative pions at ~500MeV/c.

•Thereafter, more refined estimates of particle production from the target.

Use these in any discussion with ISIS regarding deeper target dips to produce higher rates.

4. Muon Beamline setup.•With the target, beamline and detector systems commissioned, the first design goal is a matched 6π mm rad, 200MeV/c muon beam.

Begin with negative polarity beams to aid setup. Set up/downstream beamline for ~260MeV/c pions. Setup alignment Scale upstream section to ~444MeV/c pions, downstream fixed Measure downstream transmission, misalignment. Measure natural emittance at tracker (3 tracker planes) Calculate matched beam sizes Optimise downstream optics for beamsizes/divergences at tracker. With spectrometer solenoid available, a direct observation and control

of the emittance and match will be possible.
