Guards are changed every thirty minutes during the day, every hour during, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.

The Guard walks 21 steps in front of the tomb, waits 21 seconds, then repeats again.

What does it Represent?

• The Three Servicemen represent heroism, patriotism, and honor.

• The statue is positioned facing the Vietnam Wall, as if the soldiers are looking for their names. The statue was added to the memorial to detract attention from the Vietnam Wall because of the negative comments that the wall was receiving. Some people felt that Maya Lin's design for the Vietnam War Memorial was an anti-war statement, so they created this statue to detract attention from the other statue. An American flag is flown 24/7 behind them
