FellowPrisoners From Saturdays Daily Sun It II Owen twice sentenced to death for the killing of U L Smith near Jonesville last winter has again been granted a stay of execution by the prompt action of his attorneys Cols W S IJroomo and W E Maker who sued out the writ of error which stopped the proceedings The writ Is made returnable on October 1th and If the man I final- ly hung It will occur about the tuner of November or the first part of December which will be as early as the matter can Le arranged as it now stands This will give the prisoner ample time to prepare himself for hi tu ture If he Is to hang but a strung effort will still be made to have sentence changed to life imprison- ment The following message was by Sheriff Itamsey from Governor GllchrUt yesterday morning after the shurilT had ammged the trap rope for the execution right In sight of the prisoner G Hamaoy Sheriff Writ of er- ror having lieu tabued you will nut execute death warrant upon K II Owen but return warrant to me Wire acknowledgement upon receipt of this ALHEHT W GILCHIHST Governor Owen stood by the bars within a few feet of where the trap was being arranged cud the rope made ready for Ills execution and while the sheriff was engaged in his work he repeated- ly stated titan the officer was going to all of that trouble for nothing us lie would never hang Wife No 2 was here yesterday from Ocala having come up with two of Owens sons and was accompanied- by three young ladies whose names we did not learn tj witness the exe- cution She stated that so far as she knew Owen had been married only three times Instead of four as way stated In yesterdays paper Hud this execution occurred here yesterday it wouhl have been the first white hanging ever witnessed in this city and the second one that has ever been known to have occur- red in the county Some of the old- est residents state that one white hanging took place ut Ncwnansvllle some seventy years ago but there is no record of It in the court house now Col Rivers was seen In the after- noon and stated that the writ only amounted to a slay of execution foi Owen until a later date He said that the court had made a special order in the case allowing sixty days In which to Ole the bill of excep- tions The time that elapsed- was nearly double that and conse- quently there was no exceptions to anything that was done in the trial
