1. Ring a Bell Numbers – Fun Math in the Classroom

Ring a Bell Numbers is one of my favorite game-type activities in the classroom since it allows numbers from outside the classroom to enter my students’ lives in a fun, engaging way. Here are some reasons to use this activity:

Excellent way to reinforce the importance of numbers• Shows numbers as part of common knowledge• Relates mathematics to the real world• Great way to review vocabulary• Good for class game by teams• Engages all levels of learners• Provides segue into lesson

2. Math Made Fun – a Video Series for Math Mavens and Future Math MavensOn my mathvideouniversity site on youtube, I’ve begun a series of videos intended to bring FUN into the math classroom while still teaching sound mathematics. My coauthor, Brad Fulton, and I have created literally thousands of pages of activities on Microsoft Word and PowerPoint that are currently residing on our hard drives. Prior to making these videos, the only people who were able to take advantage of these resources were our students and the folks who attended our workshops/conferences or bought our books and DVDs.

We want to make this exciting mathematics more available to a wider audience, and have decided that creating online videos will do the trick! Our goal is to create videos of 5 – 10 minute duration that are tightly focused around one topic that show some fascinating aspects of mathematics. Here are some ways/reasons these videos can be used:

2. Math Made Fun – a Video Series for Math Mavens and Future Math MavensIt’s possible to do things on a video that are not able to be done in a classroomStudents can watch these videos any time – pause/rewind any part of videoParents/tutors can watch with students to give help as needed

1. They allow parents to keep in contact with what’s going on in the classroom2. A new model: Instruction can happen outside the classroom & tutoring can happen inside the classroom3. Students need to see that education/training is available to suit their schedules4. Allows educators to view video to improve instructional strategies5. Can be used for teacher inservice training at workshops/faculty meetings6. Can be used for individual teacher enrichment/education7. Can showcase teachers at their best – without having to deal with daily issues8. And lastly, a substitute can show the video so that instruction can take place in a teacher’s absence

3. Video – Standardized Test Strategy – Working Backwards

The Standardized Test Strategy – Working Backwards video shares one approach I take in class with students when explaining how to do well on standardized tests. It’s helpful to have the correct answer as one of the possible answers given on the test. It’s even nicer when you have some strategies to make it even easier to score better!

4. Line by Line – A Mathematical Puzzle Poem Made of Numbers

Line by Line – A Mathematical Puzzle Poem gives the reader clues about a mathematical poem made up of numbers. Each line gives a clue about the line following. Line by Line, Part 2 will present the solution. Here is where you can find this (somewhat ) classic poser on youtube:  A Mathematical Puzzle Poem

5. Video – Sum Equals Product Puzzle – Part 1

Here’s a puzzle from the California Math Communicator, the quarterly math journal for California’s math teachers from the California Math Council. The Sum Equals Product Puzzle asks the question, “Can you find two positive integers whose sum equals their product?” Bill Lombard shares this problem and shows several extensions of this puzzle about number sense. Part 2, the next video in this series, will show the solution, Bill’s method of solving, extensions, the generalization, and some pedagogy of teaching problem solving in the math classroom.

6. Reverse the Math Puzzle Using 2, 3, and 4

I’ve just posted a new video at my mathvideouniversity site on youtube called Reverse the Math Puzzle Using 2, 3, and 4. This puzzle uses the numbers 2, 3, and 4, along with standard operational symbols of mathematics to create the numbers 1 – 10.The reason it’s called Reverse the Math is that the numbers from 1 – 10 are the target numbers, or essentially the answers to problems that must be created; so students and puzzle enthusiasts are given the answers, but must come up with problems that have the answers from 1 – 10.Not only is this a great puzzle that builds number sense, it also reinforces a great deal of number properties and provides examples of algebra concepts in a fun way. You can find solutions using exponents, factorials, and square roots, and in most cases there are a number of different ways to express numbers using the given “ingredients.” I’ve used this type of puzzle for years, often spending a week on this as warmups or part of homework. Each day I change the ingredients and watch students’ number sense and enthusiasm grow.

7. GeoGebra Prim – a Simpler Version of GeoGebra for Younger Students

The developers of GeoGebra have created a version of the algebra/geometry/creative math software for younger students. This “slimmed down” version has much of the capabilities of its bigger cousin, but with a simplified interface. Users of GeoGebra will find no difficulty with this version, but for new users it is somewhat easier since there are no dropdown icon menus. There are some default options that simplify drawing, and only the most common geometry constructions are available from this menu. Here’s the download site for this new addition/edition of GeoGebra – making this creative, intuitive software easier to use for younger minds:

http://www.geogebra.org/webstart/4.0/GeoGebraPrim.jnlpSome of the features:* Restricted set of Tools available* All available Tools visible at once* Larger Font size* Larger / Thicker Objects* Just the Graphics View showing* Easier to select objects* Labeling of objects disabled* Angles always between 0° and 180° by defaultMy verdict after playing with this new version: It’s a sure winner, and I’m glad to see that younger people will be better able to develop their mathematical minds with GeoGra Prim.

8. Mr. L’s YouTube KenKen Video

I got an email from YouTube a few days ago asking if I was interested in YouTube’s Partnership Program. This program allows video makers the opportunity to place ads next to their videos and receive a share of the revenue.I was surprised at this, so I visited my KenKen video, KenKen 4×4 Introduction and Strategy, and found out that it’s been watched over 13,000 times as of this date (mid-Dec 2010). That’s pretty cool for a math/puzzle video. It’s nice to see so many people interested in puzzles, especially one that is so math oriented. So I guess I’ll make some more vids showing how to use puzzles in and out of the classroom to improve logical and mathematical thinking.

9. Video – Standardized Test Strategy – Eliminate Impossible Answers

The Standardized Test Strategy – Eliminate Impossible Answers video shares the approach I take in class with students when explaining how to do well on standardized tests. There’s a lot of good thinking that can be found in multiple choice tests, and I stress with students that they want to be “smart test-takers” when doing these tests. I don’t give answers here, but point students in the right direction so they don’t make obvious mistakes.

10. Pyramid Math – a Video Introduction to the Number Sense Development Activity

One of the most popular activities from the Teacher to Teacher Press book Number Sense is Pyramid Math. This creative practice activity facilitates discovery of number patterns and develops number sense.  The activity works great with both positive and negative numbers and decimals and fractions.  Because it can be designed to be self-checking, it is easy for the teacher and engaging for the students. Watch Bill as he gives an intro to this wonderful activity. It can be played in HD (720p) for full-screen use in classrooms with projectors.

13b. Knights Tour 5x5

Knights Tour 5x5 is a motivating activity/puzzle that works with both over and under achievers, promotes critical thinking and strategy, and is a great introduction to chess. It has multiple solutions, is self-assessing, and can be extended to an 8×8 grid involving magic squares.

20. Pendulum Waves

Fifteen uncoupled simple pendulums of monotonically increasing lengths dance together to produce visual traveling waves, standing waves, beating, and (seemingly) random motion.

The period of one complete cycle of the dance is 60 seconds. The length of the longest pendulum has been adjusted so that it executes 51 oscillations in this 60 second period. The length of each successive shorter pendulum is carefully adjusted so that it executes one additional oscillation in this period. Thus, the 15th pendulum (shortest) undergoes 65 oscillations.
