What Must Teachers Do During Roster Verification?

• Teachers verify their rosters are accurate by:

• Adding and removing rosters

• Adding and removing students

• Determine Instructional Availability and

Instructional Responsibility percentages

• Submitting rosters to the School Admin for

approval by the deadline

New Term: Instructional Availability

IS NOT…•Instructional Availability is NOT synonymous with Average Daily Membership.

•Instructional Availability has nothing to do with student attendance.

NOTE:•ADM policy rules are applied to the data after the school year is over

• 140 days = full academic year• 70 days = full academic semester

IS…•Instructional Availability refers to the percentage of time the teacher was available to teach the student.

•Default is 100%

Example 1:

Sample Elementary School began the school year with (3) fourth grade teachers but enrollment continued to increase. In October, the school was allotted an additional position for fourth grade. Students were redistributed and assigned to the new teacher, Teacher Smith. Teacher Smith did not teach his students the entire school year. He only taught the students October through June.

Teacher Smith would claim his students at 90% Instructional Availability, and the other teachers, who had the students originally at the beginning of the year, would claim them the other 10%.

Example 2:

Teacher Walters is expecting her second child and anticipates being absent from school for 2 months of the school year. A long term certified substitute will cover this class while Teacher Walters is out with her new baby.

Whether a long term substitute claims instructional responsibility in roster verification will be determined by local districts.

The students on her roster will either be under claimed at 80% or may be claimed 80% by Teacher Walters and 20% by the Certified Substitute.

Example 3:

Teacher Jones at ABC Elementary School has a student, Jumping Johnny, in his class who is noticeably having difficulty. For four months of the school year, Teacher Jones has tried everything possible to serve Jumping Johnny including referral to the Exceptional Children’s Team. In a recent meeting Jumping Johnny has been identified with a behavioral disorder and is moving to a more restrictive environment. Beginning Monday, he will be moved from Teacher Jones’ class to Teacher Apple’s class for special services within the same school.

Teacher Jones would claim 40% instructional availability for Jumping Johnny and Teacher Apple would claim him 60% for instructional availability.

Example 4

Johnny is taking Algebra 1 in the fall and does not pass the course or the EOC. In the spring Johnny is taking Algebra 1 again.

His teacher, Fall Teacher, will claim 100% of the instructional responsibility for the fall course. Spring Teacher will claim 100% of the instructional responsibility for the spring course.

In this case this student will be claimed two times, but for two separate classes.
