Intel IT’s Sustainability Principles

IT sustainability is the study and practice ofusing computingresources efficiently.

Intel IT helps employees and other organizations use more efficient technologies, consume fewer resources, and emit less waste.

1 – Consciously Manage Our Capabilities

At Intel IT, we think “green” everyday with a long-term strategy for IT sustainability.

In 2010 we implemented projects that reduced our consumption of IT associated emissions by ~60,000 metric tons of CO2.

2 – Select Sustainable Suppliers

Intel’s purchasing team ensures our suppliers represent and support sustainable business practices.

A good place to learn and implement evaluation of supplier sustainability is Global e-Sustainability Initiative.

3 - Enable Intel to Meet Global Sustainability Compliance

Intel IT strives to serve as an environmental role model through our operations, policies, and industry collaboration with various organizations and eco-technology initiatives.

Some of the industry consortia and organizations, are: Climate Savers Computing website, the Green Grid , and Energy Star

4 – Measure, Monitor and Optimize Consumption

To reduce consumption and actively manage resources, Intel’s IT team started by creating an IT Baseline Sustainability Model .

Using this model, we estimate ~10% reduction in our CO2 footprint over the past 2 years.

5- Enable Sustainable Facilities

One of Intel’s most impactful sustainability initiatives to date, is our data center efficiency program.

6 - Enable Sustainability Behavior

Since 2009, Intel has linked a portion of employee compensation to achieving corporate environmental goals.

Check out some of our innovative sustainability projects…maybe they will spark some ideas in your company.

One key initiative is video conferencing. We estimate that videoconferencing saved employees 325,000 travel hours in 2011, and avoided more than $62 million in travel expenses and over 50,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions.
