NBPTS Five Core Propositions

1. Teachers are committed to students and their learning.

2. Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.

3. Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.

4. Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.

5. Teachers are members of learning communities.

National Board Certification

Applicants must have:

At least three years’ experience as a preK-12 classroom teacher or school counselor in a public or private school

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution

A valid teaching license or a license to practice as a school counselor

Is this a National Credential? State licensing or credentialing

systems set entry-level standards for novice teachers.

National Board Certification can take one to three years to complete—and consists of two major components:

You may “bank” scores for two years and retake parts for a pro-rated fee.

Candidate Fees

Nonrefundable Application Processing Fee:  $65 Due: When application is submitted.

Nonrefundable Initial Fee:  $500 (applied to the total assessment fee) Due: No later than December 31, 2008*

Balance of Assessment Fee:  $2,000 ($2500 total)

Due: No later than January 31, 2009- OR - Due: No later than March 15, 2009, if you participate in the Extended Payment Plan
