PRESS RELEASE – 25 February 2019 – for immediate release www.thecasecentre.org/winners2019

Announcing The Case Centre’s* Award and Competition Winners 2019

Now in their 29th year, The Case Centre’s 11 Awards and five Competitions celebrate excellence in case writing and teaching at schools of business, management and government worldwide.

Highlights

The Overall Winning Case, on Accor’s digital marketing, was co-authored at Harvard Business School (HBS), the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, Cornell University and ESSEC Business School. (This is a fourth Overall Award for HBS**, a first-time success in the Awards for Cornell SC Johnson College, and a first-time Overall win for ESSEC, which has won two category awards in previous years.)

Outstanding Case Teacher was won by David Wood, the second time a member of Ivey Business School’s faculty has won this Competition.

The prestigious Outstanding Contribution to the Case Method was won by Vijaya Narapareddy Zinnoury of the Daniels College of Business, University of Denver. She was the winner of the Outstanding Case Writer Competition in 2018 and is the third female winner in the nine years the Outstanding Contribution to the Case Method has been recognised.

Outstanding Compact Case was a new competition for 2019. The inaugural winner, a cartoon case, from ICFAI Business School, is a first win for this innovative pedagogical format. Its co-author (with illustrator Sid Ghosh) Debapratim Purkayastha has won a total of three Awards/Competitions this year to add to the five won in previous years. (Debapratim Purkayastha has consistently topped The Case Centre’s Top 40 Bestselling Case Authors list since it was first compiled in 2015/16.)

This year’s Awards and Competitions sees a growing diversity of successful institutions from right across the globe including five first-time winning schools (Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford; Columbia Business School; Cornell SC Johnson College of Business; ESCP Europe; ISEG Lisbon School of Economics & Management) indicating that excellence in the case method is no longer the sole domain of a small group of elite institutions or faculty. There were 23 first-time, individual faculty/research winners.

Commenting on the 2019 Awards, Richard McCracken, Director of The Case Centre, said: “Coming hot on the heels of the inaugural World Case Teaching Day, held on 5 February 2019, this year’s flagship Awards and Competitions show that over their 29-year history, standards of excellence in case writing and teaching have grown and spread right around the world to more institutions than ever before. Award winning cases were taught in 103 schools in 34 countries. While many schools encourage faculty to prioritise journal-worthy research, the fact that ever more individual authors and teachers are now winning Case Awards and Competitions, bears testament to the widespread dedication of faculty to bring students around the world topical, relevant and innovative classroom materials. Our annual case ‘Oscars’ shine a proud annual light on these impactful achievements.”

Winning case subjects included for the first time President Trump (Outstanding Case Writer Competition). Other subjects being taught in classrooms worldwide with award-winning cases now include Uber, for the third time, cases on familiar multinationals such as Accor, Amazon and Apple, while cases on local business issues were also well represented among the winners, such as the Free Case category winner on KazOil, highlighting current national/international geopolitical trends.

2. Award descriptions, judging criteria & judges

The Case Centre Awards and Competitions recognise outstanding case writers and teachers from across the globe. These prestigious accolades celebrate worldwide excellence in case writing and teaching and are now considered the case method community's annual 'Oscars'.

Awards for cases are presented for ten management categories plus an Overall Winner Award and a ‘free’ case. Each year, an award is also made to recognise an individual who has made an Outstanding Contribution to the Case Method.

The Outstanding Case Teacher competition recognises an excellent practitioner in the case classroom.

Three case writing competitions are held each year to find an outstanding case writer, an outstanding first-time case writer, and to identify the best new compact case of less than five pages.

The Awards are in their 29th year. They have been awarded on a global basis since 2011 (previously European Awards).

Management categories, including the ‘free case’ and Overall Winner Award, are presented to those cases that have been used in the largest number of organisations across the globe in the past year. Cases that have been added to The Case Centre’s collection in the past five years are eligible. The Overall Award goes to the most popular case across all categories.

Awards are assessed anonymously, based on data. The Competitions are decided by a judging panel.

Outstanding Contribution to the Case Method: The Case Centre’s executive committee selects the recipient of this award.

Case Writing Competitions: Expert panels judge the case writing competition entries anonymously to ensure complete impartiality.

2019 Outstanding Case Writer judges: David Dubois, INSEAD; Raymond Madden, Razak School of Government; Richard McCracken, The Case Centre; S Nazli Wasti, Middle East Technical University.
