Butterflies are among nature’s most beautiful creations. While their colours have always been admired, particularly by artists, they serve other purposes. Some butterflies use their colour for camouflage. They are able to blend in with tree branches or flowers that they feed on. Some butterflies use their bright colouring as a warning to predators. The Magnificent Owl butterfly has a large dot on each of its wings that looks exactly like an owl’s eye. This tricks predators into thinking that the butterfly is a larger animal.
Most butterflies feed on the nectar of plants. They use a long mouth part called a proboscis to dip into the flowers and suck up the nectar. Some butterflies prefer to feed on rotting fruit. Butterflies are important to nature because they pollinate plants when they feed.
During its lifecycle, a butterfly goes through many changes in both body form and colour. There are four stages of butterfly life: egg, caterpillar (larva), chrysalis (pupa), and adult. After about two weeks, baby caterpillars hatch from eggs and start feeding. This stage lasts anywhere from 3 to 12 weeks, depending on the species. The pupa stage is where the caterpillar changes into a butterfly. This transformation takes about two weeks.
Butterflies are found all over the world, but the widest diversity of the species
is found in tropical climates. The most familiar butterfly to Nor th Americans is the Monarch butterfly.
