Vietnam is a country in Southeast Asia. In 1957 the country was having a civil war. The United States became involved in it. Many Vietnamese people fled their country. They went to refugee camps, or traveled by boats to new places. Many families ended up separated.

Nguyen (nōō yen) is the main character’s family name. Her given name (first name) is Hoa (hwä), which means “flower”. Ut (ōōt) is her nickname★ meaning youngest daughter.
