Throughout the World, millions of Muslims and faithfuls of the Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.) gathered

together in thousands of Ashura processions.

Here is a glimpse of this worldwide phenomenon in the UK and Europe.

When the month of Muharram arrives, millions of lovers

of the Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.) gather together and remember in

congregation the martyrdom of the Hussain (a.s.). We re-

live and recount the days of Imam Hussain (a.s.) and his

family and loyal companions in Karbala, culminating on

the tenth of Muharram, the day of the Great Sacrifice, in

which this beloved grandson of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.)

and his brothers, nephews, friends and companions was

mercilessly butchered, thirsty, on the banks of the river

Euphrates, by the demonic army of accursed Yazeed ibn

Mu’awiyah.

This mourning and grieving is out of our love for them, and

it is a show of our alliance with them and allegiance to

them, and our condemnation of Yazeed and the evil he

stood for. It is a display of our want to learn about the

path of Imam Hussain (a.s.) and the Imams (a.s.) and our

desire to be their ardent and committed supporters.

However, unfortunately, this display of emotion for Imam

Hussain (a.s.) and his companions is seen in a very nega-

tive light by some members of the Muslim Ummah, deem-

ing it to be an innovation in Islam and an act of paganism

which has nothing to do with Islam. They see the acts and

rituals of mourning as something wayward and sectarian

and political, with no basis in Islam. They see the battle of

Karbala as a power feud between the Banu Hashim and

Banu Umayyah, not as a battle of good versus evil.

But if we examine the Islamic sources we will see that the

tragedy of Karbala is infused with Islam in a very profound

way. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) was foretold this accord-

ing to numerous ahadeeth. In one such narration Anas ibn

Malik narrated that as Hussain (a.s.) was sitting on the

shoulders of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) and Umm Salamah

was also present, an angel came to the Prophet (s.a.w.s.)

and asked “Do you love him?” He said, “Yes.” The angel

said, “Indeed your Ummah will kill him, and if you wish, I

can show you the place where he will be killed”. Then, he

gave the earth of Karbala in the hands of the Prophet

(s.a.w.s), and he then gave it to Umm Salamah. (Musnad

Ahmad, v3, p242; Saheeh ibn Hibban, v15, p142)

In the same manner it is narrated from Umm Salamah that

she found the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s) crying profusely. On

asking the Prophet (s.a.w.s) on the reason for this, he ex-

plained that an angel has come and told him that his son

Hussain will be killed by this Ummah, and he brought the

earth of that land wherein he will be killed and he gave it

to her. (Musnad Ahmad, v6, p294; Muntakhab Musnad

Abd ibn Hameed, p443)

Abdullah bin Nujayy narrated from his father, that he trav-

elled with Imam Ali (a.s.), and he used to carry his water.

When they were next to Nainawa on his way to Siffin, Ali

(a.s.) called, “Be patient Oh Abu Abdillah (Hussain), be

patient Oh Abu Abdillah (Hussain) by the banks of the Eu-

phrates.” I *Nujayy+ said, “What is this?” He *Ali (a.s.)+

said, “I entered upon the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) one day while

his eyes were shedding tears. I asked why he was crying,

and he said, 'Jibraeel was here earlier and he told me that

Hussain will be killed by the bank of the Euphrates and he

said 'do you want me to provide you a sample from his

earth *where he will be killed+ so you can smell it?' and I

said 'yes'. So he extended his hand and he took a grip

from the soil and gave it to me, thus I weep. '” (Musnad

Ahmad, v1, p85; Al-Musannaf, Ibn Abi Shaybah, v8, p632;

Musnad Abi Ya’la, v1, p298)

So it is clear that the mourning over Imam Hussain (a.s.) is

the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.). He wept and

mourned the martyrdom of his grandson more than fifty

Page 7: 1 AL MAJLIS Issue 92 | NOV/DE 2015 - majlis.org.uk · reached Karbala on the 20th of Safar, and paid his respects to Imam Hussain (a.s.) and grieved and lamented over the tragedy

years before the battle of Karbala, and whoever was fore-

told this he or she also grieved alike.

And as the tragedy took place, the narrations tell us that

the skies cried and the Jinns wept and eulogized over this

most tragic event in this history of mankind, in which the

grandson of the Final Messenger of God (s.a.w.s.) stood up

to save Islam against an enemy that was seeking to de-

stroy it, while all others stood idly by.

The Weeping of the Skies

Al-Bayhaqi narrates from Abul-Qabeel: When Hussain

(a.s.) was killed, the Sun was eclipsed in such a manner

that the stars became visible in the middle of the day,

such that we thought this this was it (i.e. the day of Judg-

ment). (Sunan al-Bayhaqi, v3, p337)

Al-Tabarani narrates from Isa ibn al-Harith al-Kindi: When

Husain (a.s.) was killed, for seven days when we offered

Asr prayers we looked at the Sun (reflected) on the sides

of the walls, they were like cloths coloured with red

safflower dye, and we looked at the stars and some were

colliding with others. (Al-Mu’jam al-Kabeer, Al-Tabarani,

v3, p114)

Ali ibn Mas’har narrates from his grandmother Umm-e-

Hakeem: Hussain was killed when I was a young girl, and

the skies remained for days like *the colour of+ clotted

blood. (Al-Mu’jam al-Kabeer, Al-Tabarani, v3, p113)

Khalad ibn Khalifah narrated from his father: When

Hussain (a.s.) was killed, and sky became dark and the

stars appeared during the day – until I saw the star Al-

Jawza (Orion) – and red dust fell. (Tareekh Dimashq, Ibn

Asakir, v14, p226)

Al-Aswad ibn Qays narrated: The horizons of the sky red-

dened after the killing of Hussain (a.s.) for six months;

such was seen in the horizons of the sky as though it was

blood. (Tareekh Dimashq, Ibn Asakir, v14, p227)

The Weeping of the Earth

In an authenticated account recorded in various books, Al-

Waleed ibn Abdil-Malik asked his court: Which one of you

can tell me what the stones of Bayt-ul-Muqaddas did on

the day Hussain ibn Ali (a.s.) was killed? Ibn Shihab al-

Zuhri, the famous jurist and scholar, stood up and said:

“Not a stone was overturned except that there was fresh

blood beneath it.” (Tareekh Dimashq, Ibn Asakir, v14,

p229; Tahdheeb al-Kamal, Al-Mazi, v6, p434; Dalail al-

Nabuwwah, Al-Bayhaqi, v6, p471; al-Mu’jam al-Kabeer, al-

Tabarani, v3, p113)

The Wailing of the Jinns

Two wives of the Holy Prophet *s+, Umm Salamah and

Maimunah, testify that they heard the Jinns wail and la-

ment over Imam Hussain (a.s.) when he was martyred,

and this is confirmed through authenticated narrations. (Al

-Mu’jam al-Kabeer, Al-tabarani, v3, p121-2; Tareekh Di-

mashq, Ibn Asakir, v14, p239-40; Tahdheeb al-Kamal, Al-

Mazi, v6, p441; Al-Isabah, Ibn Hajr, v2, p.71, Al-Bidayah

wal-Nihayah, Ibn Katheer, v6, p259)

Abu Janab al-Kalbi also narrates that the gravediggers re-

lated to him: When we went to the graves at night when

Hussain (a.s.) was killed, we heard the jinns lament over

him. (Al-Mu’jam al-Kabeer, Al-tabarani, v3, p122)

So when we mourn for Hussain (a.s.), we mourn with the

Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.), we mourn with Umm Salamah

(r.a.), we mourn with Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.), we

mourn with the angels and the jinns, we mourn with the

skies and the earth.

They say that all roads lead to Rome, but on the 20th of the month of Safar in the Islamic calendar, millions will converge in the holy city of Karbala. They will take many paths: by air, by road and by foot, but whatever these paths may be and wherever they may begin from, they all lead to Karbala. Millions are planning to visit the shrine Imam al-Hussain (a.s.) in Karbala from around the world, making it the larg-est gathering in humanity. The millions of believers will converge in this small town to pay their respects and their allegiances to the dear grandson of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) who sacrificed so much for Islam and for the Muslims. And many of these faithfuls will choose to walk from various cities around Iraq. It is a custom that began with Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari (r.a.), the old companion of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.). He reached Karbala on the 20th of Safar, and paid his respects to Imam Hussain (a.s.) and grieved and lamented over the tragedy that befell him and his companions. This ziyarah was then emphasized by the Imams (a.s.) and it became a symbol amongst the Shi’as of the Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.). Generally, the amount of emphasis that the Infallibles (a.s.) placed on the ziyarah of Imam Hussain (a.s.) is in-comparable to the ziyarah of any other person, Infallible or otherwise. The amount of reward promised for those who undertake this ziyarah is also something that one cannot imagine. It is narrated in a long hadeeth that Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) was asked by a man: “Oh son of the Messenger of Allah, should your father – i.e. Hussain – be visited?” He (a.s.) said: “Yes...” The man asked: “What is there for he who goes to him?” The Imam (a.s.) replied: “Paradise for he who believes him to be Imam.” The man asked: “What about somebody who abandons him?” The Imam (a.s.) replied: “Sorrow on the Day of Sor-rows.” The man asked: “What about somebody who stays there?” The Imam (a.s.) replied: “A thousand months of every day.”

The man asked: “And what is there for somebody who gives charity when he leaves and gives charity when he is there?” The Imam (a.s.) replied: “A thousand dirhams for every dirham.” The man asked: “What is there for somebody who dies on his way there?” The Imam (a.s.) replied: “The angels will attend the funeral procession (tashyee’) and will apply the hunoot and will provide him apparel from Heaven, and they will pray for him after he is in enshrouded with the kafan, and they will cover him with their own kafan over that kafan, and they will lay beneath him sweet-smelling bedding….” Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) also said: “Whosoever wishes to be at the banquet of light (noor) on the Day of Judgment, he should be amongst the zawwar of Hussain ibn Ali (a.s.).” Furthermore, it is reported that the days one spends to go for the ziyarah of Imam Hussain (a.s.) are not counted as a part of their age, i.e. their age stands still during their ziyarah. Imam Ali al-Ridha (a.s.) narrated from him father Imam Musa al-Kazim (a.s.) from his father Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) who said: “The days of the ziyarah of the visi-tors of Hussain (a.s.) are not counted as their ages nor are they counted in their time until death.” And there are many, many other such narrations giving the excellences and virtues and rewards for the Ziyarat of Sayyid al-Shuhada (a.s.), including salvation from Hell, for-giveness of sins, answering of supplications, longer life, safety, increase in sustenance and removal of hardships. These narrations tell us of the virtues of his Ziyarah, from afar or near, on Thursday nights, Fridays, on the occasions of Eid, the eve and day of Arafah, the 3rd of Sha’ban, the 15th of Sha’ban, the 1st of Rajab, the 15th of Rajab, during the month of Ramadhan, the day of Ashura, the day of Arba’een, etc – every important day in the Muslim calen-dar is adorned with the Ziyarah of Imam Hussain (a.s.) One may convey his salutations by reciting the Ziyarat from afar, or one may travel to his shrine in Karbala, but the rewards and virtues are multiplied if one travels on foot.

Ziyarat al-Arba’een

All Roads Lead to Karbala

Page 9: 1 AL MAJLIS Issue 92 | NOV/DE 2015 - majlis.org.uk · reached Karbala on the 20th of Safar, and paid his respects to Imam Hussain (a.s.) and grieved and lamented over the tragedy

The Late Ayatullah al-Uzma Sheikh Jawad Tabrizi

walking from Najaf to Karbala In one narration, Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) said to his companion Hussain ibn Thuwayr: “Oh Hussain, whoever leaves his house intending the ziyarah of the grave of Hussain ibn Ali (a.s.), if he is travelling on foot, Allah has written for him for every step a good deed and has erased a bad deed, until he reaches al-Haair (Karbala) at which point Allah will record him as amongst the successful.” In another narration the Imam (a.s.) said: “Whoever goes to the grave of Hussain (a.s.) on foot, Allah will write for him a thousand good deeds and will erase a thousand a thousand bad deeds and will raise him a thousand levels for every step he takes…”

The Late Ayatullah al-Uzma Sayyid al-Khoei during his walk to Karbala

Thus, depending on the situation, the hardships borne, the amount spent, and risks taken, and depending on the state of mind of the pilgrim and the purity of his intention, the rewards for each step can be from an addition good deed and erasure of a bad deed, to an additional thousand good deeds and the erasure of a thousand bad deeds. But above all this reward, the one single common drive that pushes us all to head towards Karbala on the occasion of Arba’een, is the love and yearning we have for Imam Hussain (a.s.), and the sorrow and grief that we feel for his suffering and anguish before he and his men were massa-cred in the most cruelest of ways almost 1,400 years ago. For Imam Hasan al-Askari (a.s.) said: “The signs of a believ-er are five: (1) the prayer of fifty rak’ats (the total of the obligatory and nawafil daily prayers); (2) the Ziyarah of Arba’een; (3) wearing a ring on the right hand; (4) the forehead marked with the earth; (5) reciting ‘Bismillah’ aloud.” They may say that all roads used to lead to Rome; howev-er, there is only one road that leads to eternal salvation and bliss, and that is the path of Sayyid ul-Shuhada (a.s.).

Page 10: 1 AL MAJLIS Issue 92 | NOV/DE 2015 - majlis.org.uk · reached Karbala on the 20th of Safar, and paid his respects to Imam Hussain (a.s.) and grieved and lamented over the tragedy

10

In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate the Merciful Praise belongs to Allah and peace and benedic-tions of Allah be upon our master, Muhammad and his pure progeny. It is befitting for the momeneen (believers) whom Allah has granted success to perform pil-grimage, to note that Allah, the Exalted, select-ed prophets and their noble successors from amongst His servants to be divine proofs and authority over people and that whose teachings people should follow to be guided aright. Allah has encouraged people to visit the sacred sites so that those infallible leaders are continuously remembered and held in reverence. Since those nobles are the best examples of servitude to Al-lah, the Glorified and jihad in His way and sac-rifice for the cause of His everlasting religion, visiting their shrines, commemorating them and narrating their stories will remind the momeneen of Allah, the Exalted, His doctrines and injunctions. Hence, it is one of the essentials of this pilgrim-age that the pilgrim, in addition to remember-ing Imam Hussein's sacrifices and devotion in the way of Allah, the Exalted, observes the teachings of Islam including those relating to prayer, hijab, self-reform, selflessness and moral etiquettes etc. so that his pilgrimage may be a step towards developing and training the soul for accepting these and consolidating their ef-fects until the next pilgrimage. It is only by so doing that attending these ceremonies will be practically the same as attending the lessons of the Imam, peace be upon him. In fact, we have not been in the time of the Ahlul-Bayt (A.S) to learn from them directly

and be educated by them, but Allah, the Exalt-ed, has preserved their conducts for us and has persuaded us to visit them as our role models. As the contemporaries of the Ahlul-Bayt (A.S) lived with them and were put to test, Allah also wants to test us as to how far we are sincere in our desire to live with them and follow their teachings. Hence, we must be careful lest we should not falsely desire to see them. We must know that if we act as per their advice, it is hoped that we shall be resurrected along with their friends. Because it has been reported that Imam Ali (A.S) said in the Battle of Jamal: "Today we are accompanied by those who are still in the loins of their fathers and uteruses of their mothers." Therefore, it is not difficult for each of us who cherishes the hope to act according to the teachings of the Ahlul-Bayt and obey them to be educated in accord with their educational methods and benefit from their manners. Fear Allah in relation to your prayers. As stated in the hadith, it is the pillar of your religion and the ascension of the believer, if it is accepted, all other acts will be accepted and if it is rejected, all other acts of worship will also be rejected. It is befitting for believers to offer their prayers on time because Allah loves those who rush to prayer as soon as they hear the call for it. It is not appropriate for a believer to engage in any other acts of worship in the prime for prayer because prayer is the best form of obedience to Allah. It is has been narrated from the Ahlul-Bayt, peace be upon them, that they said: "Our intercession (with Allah) will not be won or attained by that person who depreciates or undervalues the prayer".

Ayatullah Sayyed Sistani’s

Advice on the Ziyarah of

Arba’een Below is the response of Grand Ayatullah Sayyid Ali

Al-Sistani (long may he live) upon being asked by a group of

believers for advice on the occasion of the

Ziyarah of Arba’een.

Page 11: 1 AL MAJLIS Issue 92 | NOV/DE 2015 - majlis.org.uk · reached Karbala on the 20th of Safar, and paid his respects to Imam Hussain (a.s.) and grieved and lamented over the tragedy

11

About Imam Hussein's special attention to prayer on the Day of Ashura, it has been report-ed that he told his companion who reminded him of the prime time for the prayer: "You reminded me of prayer, may Allah include you amongst those who are conscious of (their duty to) prayer." Then and there he established prayer under a rain of arrows. Fear Allah in sincerity inasmuch as the value and barakah of one's deeds depends on how far he is sincere in performing them for Allah's sa-ke. Because Allah will not accept any deeds which are not purely for Him. It has been nar-rated from the Holy Prophet (S) that he said during Muslims' emigration from Mecca to Me-dina: "Whoever migrates for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, he has migrated to Him and whoever migrates to make worldly gains, he has migrated to the world. Allah will reward sincere deeds to the extent that it will increase to seven hundred folds and He doubles the re-wards for whomsoever He wants." Hence, it is necessary on the pilgrims to re-member Allah and recite zikr of Allah and be mindful of every step and every deed to be for Allah's sake. They should know that Allah has not bestowed anyone with a blessing so pre-cious as sincerity in belief, sayings and con-ducts. An act which is devoid of sincerity ends with the end of life in this world whereas a since act will be lasting and blessed in this world and the hereafter. Fear Allah in observing modest clothing which is amongst the most important thing that the Ahlul-Bayt (A.S) heeded to even in the most difficult circumstances and they were the best role models in terms of observing modest cloth-ing. Imam Hussein (A.S) was not hurt as much

as he was hurt by the enemy due to violation of his dignity and respect. It is, therefore, neces-sary for all pilgrims especially ladies to observe modesty in their conducts, clothing and appear-ance and to avoid whatever is deemed a viola-tion of this e.g. wearing close-fitting clothes, mixing up in an abominable way with members of the opposite gender and wearing inadmissi-ble jewelry. In fact, it is befitting for believers that in order for them to keep the sacred cere-mony untainted, they have to, as far as possible, adhere to the highest levels of modesty. We pray to Almighty Allah to elevate the posi-tion of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his descendants, and his pure family (A.S), due to the sacrifices they made in the way of Allah and their efforts to guide His creatures. May He increase salawat (greeting) and bless-ings on them as He has sent greetings to previ-ous prophets especially Ibrahim and his family. We also pray to Allah to bestow barakah upon the pilgrimage of the pilgrims of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him and accept it in the best way as He accepts the deeds of His noble servants so that they may, through their lifestyle and deeds in this pilgrimage, be a role model for others for the rest of their lives and be rewarded for their love of and obedience to the household of the Prophet (A.S) and for preaching his mission. Let's hope that on the Day of Judgment when everyone of the people are called with his Imam, they (pilgrims) are called with the Ahlul-Bayt (A.S) and that those who are martyred in this way, they are, due to their sacrifices and the suf-ferings which they have gone through, resur-rected with Hussein, peace be upon him and his friends. Verily, He is All-Hearing, Ever-Responsive.

Page 12: 1 AL MAJLIS Issue 92 | NOV/DE 2015 - majlis.org.uk · reached Karbala on the 20th of Safar, and paid his respects to Imam Hussain (a.s.) and grieved and lamented over the tragedy

12

…Now let us return to Imam Husayn. When the Imam left

Mina he did not go to Mecca to prevent himself from

being killed because he wanted to preserve the sanctity

of Mecca. He performed the umrah al-mufradah (visiting

the Ka’bah, the Sacred House of God, independently of

Hajj) instead of the Hajj and left for Karbala. But before

leaving, he delivered a speech where he clearly informed

people that he is going to be killed:

مه كان باذالً فيىا مهجته ومىطىاً عهى نقاء هللا وفسه

فهيرحم معىا، فإوّىي مصبحاً إن شاء هللا تعال.

“Whoever is ready to give the last drops of his

heart for us, and has made himself prepared for

meeting Allah, let him depart with us, for I am I’m

going to move tomorrow morning insha-Allah.”

(Al-Luhuf, Sayyid ibn Tawus, p.60)

During this speech, the Imam also said:

وصبر عهى بالئه يىفّيىا أجىر انصابريه

“We are patient in the face of Allah’s trials, and He

will reward us with the reward of those who are

patient.”

Imam Husayn (a) clearly says that he wants to be patient

to achieve the reward that does not have measure. The

Imam even used the verb “ajr” which derives from the

same root of “ajr” used in verse 39:10 regarding the

measureless reward of the patient (“Say: ‘O ye my serv-

ants who believe! Fear your Lord, good is (the reward) for

those who do good in this world. Spacious is God’s earth!

those who patiently persevere will truly receive a reward

without measure!’”). Through his patience, the Imam

achieved an unlimited position in which Allah (swt) gave

him whatever he wants whether for himself, his family, or

for those who sincerely love him.

Allamah Bahr al-‘Ulum, a very pious and outstanding

scholar, was once pondering over why Allah (swt) re-

wards the visitors of Imam Husayn (a) abundantly as

mentioned in various narrations. The mentioned rewards

are so much that makes it difficult to understand why.

While busy with this thought, a person came asking him

what he was thinking about. After listening to Allamah’s

response, this person responded by narrating a story:

One day, a king and his companions left their palace to go

hunting. During the trip, the king got lost. It was getting

dark and he was not able to find any of his companions to

show him the way. After lots of struggles and attempts,

all he found was a tent of an old lady who lived with her

son. Their only possession apart from the tent was a goat

that provided them with milk as their only food. Not even

knowing the true identity of their guest, they slaughtered

their goat and prepared a good meal for him.

Then they prepared a bed for him to sleep. The next day,

the king found his companions. When he returned to the

palace he called for a meeting in which he asked for an

appropriate way to reward those people. All the ideas

they came up with were rejected by the king because he

said the old lady and her son gave me all they had while

they were not in debt to me, so now even if I give them

my entire kingdom it will not compensate for what they

did for me.

Hearing this story helped Allamah realize why Allah (swt)

treats Imam Husayn (a) in such a way: the Imam gave

everything he had for Allah (swt).

The Suffering of Imam Husayn (a.s.)and Our Suffering for Him

Hujjatul-Islam wal-Muslimeen

Sheikh Muhammad Ali Shomali

Sayyed Ali Khamenei, long may he live)

and His Companions’, based on his lectures)

Thus, Allah (swt) grants so much reward not only for

Imam Husayn (a) but also to those who visit him. There is

no limit in Allah’s riches: He gives those rewards to Imam

Husayn (a) and has yet more to give. Of course, this is,

indeed, an excuse for Allah (swt) to provide for His crea-

tures, since He is always looking for excuses to give due

to His boundless generosity. It is a shame that sometimes

we can be so indolent that we do not even give Him an

excuse to help us and offer us His abundant blessings.

Our Suffering for Imam Husayn (a)

The tragedy of Ashura is not only the tragedy of the Ahlul

Bayt (a); it is our tragedy. We are also those whom con-

dolences are offered to. In Ziyarat Ashura, we refer to it

as our tragedy when we say:

أن يعطيىي بمصابي بكم أفضم ما يعطى مصاباً بمصيبته

“I ask Allah (swt) to give me because of my pain

and suffering over your loss the best reward that a

person who faces a tragedy receives.”

We do not just participate in the mourning congregations

to offer condolences; rather, we are here because it is our

tragedy - we have lost our Imam. When we meet on the

day of Ashura, we are recommended to say to each oth-

er:

أعظم هللا أجىروا بمصابىا بانحسيه

“May Allah (swt) make our reward for our suffer

ing over the loss of Husayn great!”

Today, on the day of Ashura, Imam Husayn (a) reached a

lofty status by being patient in the face of this tragedy, a

status which he could not have achieved without experi-

encing it. The true lovers and mourners of Imam Husayn

(a) can join him by having the same patience, a patience

which resembles the patience of Imam Husayn (a) with

fortitude, honour, and love for Allah.

Page 14: 1 AL MAJLIS Issue 92 | NOV/DE 2015 - majlis.org.uk · reached Karbala on the 20th of Safar, and paid his respects to Imam Hussain (a.s.) and grieved and lamented over the tragedy

Q: The earth is one of the purifying agents. Follow-

ing the example of a shoe's sole that can be purified

by walking on the earth, would the same rule ap-

ply to car tires?

A: The earth cannot purify the tires.

Q: If a dog licks my body or clothes, how should I

purify it?

A: It is sufficient to wash it once. However, if the

water is little, it is necessary to rid it of the water by

wringing.

Q: Are the Sikhs and Buddhists considered to be

among the followers of the past revealed religions

like the Jews and the Christians?

A: They are not counted among the People of the

(Revealed) Books (the Ahlul Kitab) .

Q: Can a Muslim, who rents a fully furnished

house in the West, consider everything in it to be

ritually pure as long as he does not find any trace

of impure things in it, even if the previous occu-

pant was from Ahlul Kitab, i.e., a Christian or a

Jew? What if the previous occupant was a Bhud-

dhist or an atheist who does not believe in God and

the prophets?

A: Yes, he can consider everything in the house

ritually pure as long as he does not know that it

has become impure. Just conjecture or doubt about

impurity is of no value.

Q: If there is a very small amount of blood or urine

on my body or clothes, can I pray without having

to wash it?

A: No, he cannot pray unless he makes his body or

clothes tahir, except for the situation in which he

has a small amount of blood on his clothes and it

does not cover an area greater than that of a

‘dirham’ (i.e. which is almost equal to the upper joint

of the thumb), provided that it is human blood or blood from an animal whose meat is halal. But if the blood is that of menstruation or an unlawful animal, or if the blood is on the body—not the clothes—then one cannot pray in that blood.

Q: Can the clothes washed with liquid detergent in

laundry facilities owned by a non-Muslim be con-

sidered tahir while knowing that Muslims as well

as non-Muslims wash their clothes there?

A: If you do not know that the clothes have come

into contact with a source of najasah, you can con-

sider them tahir (pure) .

Q: If blood is seen in the yolk or the white part of

the egg, does it make the egg impure and haram

for us?

A: The clot of blood inside the egg is tahir, but it is

haram *for consumption+. Therefore, the egg can be

eaten by removing the blood from it, provided it

not very minute and been absorbed in it. *In the

latter case, is not removable, then the egg becomes

haram.+ .

Q: The people residing in Europe are of different

faiths, nationalities and religions; and when we

buy moist or wet food items, the shopkeeper may

touch it with his hands. Since we do not know his

religion, can we consider that food as pure?

A: As long as it is not known that the hands of the

shopkeeper were najis, the food is to be considered

tahir .

Q: How does najasah (impurity) transfer from one

thing to another?

A: The impurity transfers from one item to another

through flowing wetness *that is, there is so much

wetness in the impure item that it permeates to

another item and makes it impure+. The impurity is

neither transferred when it is dry, nor is trans-

ferred by non-flowing wetness. So, if you place

your hand on a dry najis item, your hand will not

become impure.

Q: If a mosquito is sucking my blood and I kill it,

staining my body or clothese with blood, will I con-

sider it to be najis or tahir?

A: It is seen to be the blood of the mosquito, and

the blood of insects like mosquitos are tahir.

Paris Terror Attacks press statement

Majlis-e-Ulama-e-Shia (Europe) is shocked and saddened at the

recent horrific killings in Paris. The Majlis strongly condemns

these acts of terrorism unleashed on the people of Paris and also

the recent deadly attacks in Ankara, Beirut, and all over the

world. This attack is being claimed by a group which calls them-

selves ‘Islamic State’. There is nothing Islamic about such people

and their actions are evil and outside the boundaries set by the

true Islam. They do not represent Islam nor speak on behalf of

Muslims. The Majlis condemn in the strongest possible terms all

acts of terrorism, hate and violence irrespective of who the

perpetrators are and where they are committed.

Yet again we see terrorists looking to divide our communities.

We must all remain united and resolute in these difficult times.

Our condolences go out to all those affected and their families

during this very difficult time.

Majlis-e-Ulama-e-Shia (Europe)
