Great DefenseEthan Montalvo had a coming out party against Troy on Dec. 30. Montalvo led the Bobcats with a career-high 20 points including 6-of-9 from three-point range.
Montalvo’s 20 points made him the first 20-point scorer for the Bobcats this season. He also showed his playmaking ability for others by contributing a career-high four assists.
Coming Into His OwnSophomore Kavin Gilder-Tlbury has started to become a force on the defen-sive end. This season he had 10 steals in a span of three games following a season-high four against Texas Lutheran and three more vs. Prairie View A&M and Texas.
Gilder-Tilbury currently ranks third on the team with 14 steals. He is also averaging 7.4 points per game and 3.3 re-bounds per game.
Cam I AmJunior forward Cameron Naylor has impressed during his first four games of the season. Against Howard Payne he scored 18 points and added 16 rebounds. He was the first Bobcats to achieve both milestones in the same game since Tony Bishop in 2010.
For the season, Naylor is averaging 9.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. He also has contributed three blocks, all of which came against Lamar.
All-Conference PerformerJunior forward Emani Gant was named to the All-Sun Belt Second-Team. Gant is coming off
a season in which he averaged 8.9 points per game and 5.0 re-bounds per game. He finished the year ranked second in the Sun Belt in field goal percentage at .546 (118-of-216).
Gant has begun the year in fine form, picking up two double-doubles this season, and being named the Elgin
Baylor Classic MVP with 17 points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Gant is currently amongst the leaders in the Sun Belt Con-ference in steals (2.3) and field goal pct - .593 (3rd).
He is also amongst the best in the nation in steals and field goal percentage ranking 17th and 23rd respec-
tively.
Fourth All TimeDavis made his mark on the defensive end last sea-son. Davis held NBA First Round Draft Pick Elfrid Payton to 10 points at Strahan Coli-seum. Davis picked up a season-high four steals against Prairie View A&M and has 151 for his career.
Below is where Davis stands all-time at Texas State.
1. 192 David Sykes 1999-032. 161 Donte Mathis 1995-993. 154 Ryan White 2007-114. 151 Wes Davis 2011-pres.
Great DefenseThe Bobcats held Texas Lutheran to 31 points, marking the 16th time in Danny Kaspar’s career he has held a team to 40 points or less.
The Bobcats have now held three opponents under 40 points in the last two years, after pre-viously not holding an opponent to under 40 since 2003-04 when the team held Nicholls to 37 and Texas Lutheran to 39.
The 24.4 percent from the field by Texas Lutheran was the lowest opponent field goal per-centage since Kaspar came to Texas State.
No Points for YouAs is usual for Danny Kaspar, the Texas State defense finds itself atop the rankings for points allowed per game. The Bobcats have allowed 55 points or fewer in three games this season, after doing so just four times all last year.
The Bobcats are allowing an average of 55.0 points per game, which is the lowest in the Sun Belt and ranks 11th in the country.
Turning the Opposition OverTexas State has been stifling through its first seven games in taking the ball away from its opponents. The Bobcats are averaging 18.3 turnovers defen-sively, after causing Texas to turn it over 19 times on Dec. 13.
Texas State is currently 11th in the country in turnover marging with five more takeaways per game than its opponent.
The 18.6 turnovers have calculated to a turnover on 26.8 percent of oppo-nents’ possessions, which is fifth best in the country.
Thus far in Kaspar’s tenure, the Bobcats are 6-4 when forcing 17+ turnovers from their opponents. This season has marked the first time the Bobcats have done it in back-to-back games, doing so against Seattle (18) and La-mar (20) and then Howard Payne (18) and Texas Lutheran (30).
WhaT You Need To kNoW
Suffocating Defense• During the first half of the conference opener at Troy, the Bobcats held the Trojans scoreless for the final 11:35 of the first half, causing Troy to go 0-of-13 from the field.
• This season the Bobcats have allowed under 20 points in a half six times this season, and six of the seven fewest scoring halves under Coach Kaspar have come this season.
Below are the fewest points allowed in a half under Kaspar.
Stealing the Ball• Texas State is currently 17th in the nation this season, averaging 9.1 steals per game, after recording 12+ steals three times this season.
• The Bobcats have now had 10+ steals four times under Coach Kaspar.
• Somewhat surprisingly, center Emani Gant leads the team in total steals with 21 and in steals per game with 2.3. Gant is currently 23rd in the country in steals per game.
Getting It Done With Offense As Well• Texas State showed it could also be proficient offensively along with its defensive prowess, scoring a season-high 81 points on a season-best 60.4 percent (29-of-48) from the field against Prairie View A&M.
• The shooting percentage is the highest since March 14, 2013 in the WAC Tournament against Denver.
Amongst Country’s Elite• Texas State is currently the No. 12 defense in the country, allowing 54.6 points per game, holidng No. 8 Texas to just 59 points on its home floor. It was the first time Texas has been held to under 60 points on its home floor since scoring 59 against No. 22 Oklahoma State on Feb. 9, 2013.
• The 31 points allowed to Texas Lutheran was the lowest by an opponent since allow-ing 19 to Abilene Christian in 1957.
• With the 39 points given up to Howard Payne on Sunday, it marked the first time since 1952 that Texas State has allowed fewer than 40 points in back-to-back games since giving up 35 to Texas A&M Kingsville, and 27 to Sul Ross.
Best in Decades• The Bobcats’ 7-3 start this season is the best for the program since the 1993-94 sea-son.
• Texas State won its Sun Belt Conference opener, marking the first time its won its first conference game of the season since the 2010-11 season against Northwestern State.
• This year also marked the first time that the Bobcats have opened the season 2-0 against two Division I opponents since the 1998-99 season when the team beat Wis-consin-Green Bay and Baylor.
• Defensively, the Bobcats have also been their best in 16 years, as they allowed just 107 combined points through the first two games.
• That total is the lowest since allowing 106 in the 2-0 start in 1998 as well.
