Vision and opportunity

• To provide the highest quality international medical education in Vietnam

• Provide a strong foundation for the University to have a major presence in Vietnam which can be strengthened in the future

• The culture, demand and support by local authorities sets the ideal climate for this endeavour

Background

• 88 million people, economy growing at 7.5%

• 95% literacy, societal value of education

• Health care sector grappling with problems of cost, manpower shortage and technology demand greater than supply

• Government and private sector recognise the need for health care workers to be trained to international standards

• University of Sydney has had a medical exchange program with Vietnam since 1998, through Hoc Mai, the Australia-Vietnam Foundation

Our proposal

• To establish a Clinical School of the University of Sydney in Vietnam

• Several opportunities to be considered-

• a) 2 years in Sydney for basic medical science and then 2 years in Vietnam for clinical training in the Vietnamese context

• b) Postgraduate training in our professional Masters of Medicine

• c) Establishing research centres in infectious and non-infectious disease

Feasibility study progress…

• Support at highest levels of Government

• Early market assessment suggests the hybrid model is not immediately understood by Vietnamese students. However our Sydney-based students are highly enthusiastic about the opportunity for clinical placement in Vietnam. Formal market assessment is pending. Market needs may dictate the model adopted.

• English language training essential and IELTS of >7.0 required.

• Business model being developed.

• We see the establishment of this Clinical School as a natural progression
