What IS DECA?

A national association of marketing students

A co-curricular organization available for students who are interested in the following:– hospitality– finance– sales and service– advertising– business management – entrepreneurship

Civic Consciousness

Includes the following:– improving local communities through service – understanding and appreciating civic

responsibilities– supporting charitable and

Leadership Development

Social Intelligence

Emphasizes the role of networking and social interactionTeaches the importance of interpersonal and business skills– social intelligence activities

could include:• a regional DECA dance• a professional etiquette dinner• chapter socials and activities• a DECA “sports night” at the local stadium

Vocational UnderstandingRefers to career-based concepts and knowledge

DECA’s official colors are blue and gold

DECA was founded in 1946 as the Distributive Educational Club of America; It later expanded into “An Association of Marketing Students”

86% of DECA members will pursue postsecondary education

DECA Membership

DECA has over 180,000 members worldwide

DECA operates in all 50 states plus Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, Guam, the Virgin Islands, Canada, Mexico and Germany

There are nearly 5,000 marketing classes taught in the United States

Alumni, college and professional memberships are also available

Members pay minimal costs for dues each year

The national DECA organization is divided into four regions:– North Atlantic Region– Central Region – Southern Region – Western Region

National Organization

DECA is governed by a National Board of Directors which includes students officers, advisors, sponsors and staff members

A national DECA president is elected by members each year at the International Career Development Conference

A Vice President is also elected from each of the four national regions

Each state is governed by a president and a variety of elected and appointed student officers

Scholarship Opportunities

$250,000 in DECA scholarships are awarded annually Scholarships may be awarded on the basis of leadership, professional skill, DECA involvement, community service, academic excellence, etc. Examples include the following:

– Harry A. Applegate Scholarship- for DECA members who plan to pursue a degree in marketing, entrepreneurship or management

– Marriott Scholarship- for members interested in a career in hospitality or hotel management

– NAPA Scholarship- for students interested in the automotive industry

Regional conferences- are hosted annually by each of the four national regions. Conference attendees participate in interactive workshops and professional presentations which enhance leadership and networking skills

State leadership conferences- provide leadership training and planning experiences for local chapter officers

The National Marketing Education Honor Award- is a prestigious award for high school seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership involvement in DECA

The Chapter Awards Program- recognizes individual schools for their efforts in membership, public relations, chapter activities, community service and DECA events

NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award- is presented to students who have entrepreneurial experience working with a family or self-owned business, or who plan to become an entrepreneur
