m Environmental Friendly Method to Manage Cocoa Diseases Currently, there are several methods used in controlling cocoa black pod (CBP) and cocoa pod borer (CPB). An effective and economical method for the management of CBP and CPB is cultural control by means of reducing the quantity of initial inoculum by removing the infected pods essentially before they begin to sporulate and change to adult (for pest), which include regular pruning, sanitation practices and frequent removal of infected pods that can be effective in reducing the spread of the pathogen and pest. However it is very labour intensive. Another method of managing pest and disease is chemical control where cocoa pod is sprayed with fungicides and insecticides to minimise losses from CBP and CPB. This application reduces the population of the pathogen and insect, and protects the pod from any infection. Although it can be very effective, it is not cost effective and may have hazardous effects on health and environment, with detrimental effects on non-target organisms. These chemicals also remain on the plant surface. Changing social attitudes towards the use of pesticides has brought about the need to reduce the use of chemicals in pest and disease control of cocoa. The reduction in use of conventional chemical pesticides would lead to better market access for cocoa products. A promising method of managing pest and disease is biological control agent for the fungal pathogen. Biological control agents isolated from healthy cocoa pods and infected pod surface (resident antagonists) can interfere with the growth of the pathogen. Biological control also offers an environmental friendly approach to the management of cocoa disease and can be incorporated with cultural and physical control and limited chemical usage for effective integrated disease management. Biological control also avoids other problems of chemical controls such as the development of pathogen resistance to the chemical and it is non-polluting and free of outbreak of secondary pests and diseases. The present invention relates to a bio-control agent from microbial formulation to control black pod disease and cocoa pod borer on cocoa, which can be easily produced, inexpensive, and have longer shelf-life and storage abilities. www.platcomventures.com The inventors would like to speak to companies interested in licensing this technology. Environmental Friendly Method to Manage Cocoa Diseases

Currently, there are several methods used in controlling cocoa black pod (CBP) and cocoa pod borer (CPB).
