Putting In For OvertimeTexas State set a school record on Thursday night with its second straight double-overtime game. The Bobcats beat both Georgia State (Jan. 5) and UALR (Jan. 8) by the exact score of 77-74 in double OT.
Following Thursday’s game, Texas State became the first team in Sun Belt Conference history to play back-to-back double overtime games.
The only other school in the country to do so this season is Radford who has also played back-to-back double OT games, having lost both (Jan. 3 and Jan. 8).
Last season, Drexel played back-to-back triple OT games, winning both vs. Alabama and Cleveland State. Long Beach State played back-to-back dou-ble OT games in 2008-09, splitting both.
Road WarriorsTexas State started the Sun Belt season strong, going 2-1 on its opening three-game road trip. The team is 2-1 on the road in conference play for the first time since 2009-2010.
Overall, the Bobcats are now 4-2 for the first time to start conference play since 2009-10.
Texas State beat the No. 13 team in the College Insider Mid Major Poll, Geor-gia State 77-74 in double OT on Jan. 5, snapping the Panthers’ 18-home game win streak, the ninth longest in the country at the time.
Long Range ShooterEthan Montalvo had a coming out party against Troy on Dec. 30. Montalvo led the Bobcats with a career-high 20 points including 6-of-9 from three-point range.
He made his first career start vs. South Alabama. He has come on in conference play, averaging 12.3 points per game, second on the team.
Against Georgia State, Montalvo hit back-to-back threes at the end of regulation to help the Bobcats force OT.
Coming Into His OwnSophomore Kavin Gilder-Tlbury has start-ed to become a force on the defensive end. This season he had 10 steals in a span of three games and held reigning Sun Belt Player of the Year R.J. Hunter to 10 points on 0-of-10 from three-point range at Georgia State.
Gilder-Tilbury also has picked up his scoring, after scoring a career-high 16 points vs. South Alabama.
Cam I AmJunior forward Cameron Naylor has impressed during his first four games of the season. Against Howard Payne he scored 18 points and added 16 rebounds. He was the first Bobcats to achieve both milestones in the same game since Tony Bishop in 2010.
He had 18 points on 9-of-16 shooting at Georgia State. For the season, Naylor is averaging 8.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
All-Conference PerformerJunior forward Emani Gant was named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Second-Team, and is living up to the hype this year.
His latest accolade came at Georgia State when he hit a straight away three-pointer at the buzzer of the first over-time to tie the game at 69-69. It was Gant’s first three-point attempt of his career. He then poured in a career-high 22
points vs. South Alabama.
Gant has two double-doubles this season, along with being named the Elgin Baylor Classic MVP with 17
points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Gant is currently 23rd in the country in field goal per-centage (.576), which is tops in the Sun Belt.
Second All TimeDavis made his mark on the defensive end last season. Davis held Jelani Hewitt who was 7th in the country in scoring to 10 points. Davis picked up a season-high sev-en steals against ULM, one off the school record and has 167 for his career.
Below is where Davis stands all-time at Texas State.
1. 192 David Sykes 1999-032. 167 Wes Davis 2011-pres.
Great DefenseThe Bobcats held Georgia Southern to 40 points, marking the 18th time in Danny Kaspar’s career he has held a team to 40 points or less.
The Bobcats have now held four opponents to 40 or fewer points in the last two years, after previously not holding an opponent to un-der 40 since 2003-04 when the team held Nicholls to 37 and Texas Lutheran to 39.
The 24.4 percent from the field by Texas Lutheran was the lowest opponent field goal percentage since Kaspar came to Texas State.
No Points for YouAs is usual for Danny Kaspar, the Texas State defense finds itself atop the rankings for points allowed per game. The Bobcats have allowed 55 points or fewer in six games this season, after doing so just four times all last year.
The Bobcats are allowing an average of 58.1 points per game, which is the lowest in the Sun Belt and ranks 18th in the country.
When the games are adjusted for 40 minutes per game, equalizing the dou-ble overtime effect, the Bobcats are averaging just 56.1 points per game, which would rank 13th.
