KENMORE BAPTIST CHURCH

1-1 DISCIPLESHIP PROGRAM

This program has been developed for the following reasons:

1. To enable Christians to grow as disciples of Jesus Christ

2. To develop doctrinal and moral discipline

3. To increase commitment to Jesus Christ and His church

4. To give spiritual direction

5. To aid in preparation for God-glorifying ministry

This is achieved in this course through the placing of a more

mature Christian alongside a less mature Christian so that they

might challenge, encourage and assist each other in their spiritual

walk with God. While this process has many advantages wrong

attitudes existing in either party can lead to problems such as:

1. Legalism and authoritarianism concerning how one should

live

2. A worldly class system emphasising “superiority in the

faith”

3. Divisive dominance and control of people‟s lives

This is not what this program is about. We believe that the Holy

Spirit must essentially be the discipler of every Christian. The

reason that two people might come together in a discipleship

program is that they could help each other grow in the faith through

mutual ministry, as the Holy Spirit works in both their lives. Each

Christian must be finally accountable to God alone for their

personal spiritual life.

We do not therefore encourage any kind of overt pressure on those

undertaking this program to conform to some standard apart from

that clearly laid down in the notes. Even then it must always be an

individual‟s right to decide their own response to the requirements

of the program.

We desire that change and growth in a person‟s life be as a result of

their own desire rather than due to the pressure from another.

If at any time you wish to talk over this program and its

requirements, please do not hesitate to contact the pastors of the

church, who would be always willing to assist. May God bless you

in your journey to maturity...

INTRODUCTION

Hi, it‟s great to have you as part of the 1-1 Discipleship Program of

Kenmore Baptist Church. We take very seriously the commission

of Jesus Christ to His first disciples found in Matthew 28:18-20,

where He says:

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given

to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,

baptising them in the name of the Father and of the

Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey

everything I commanded you. And surely I am with

you always, to the very end of the age.”

The making of “disciples of Jesus Christ” is to be the top priority

of the church. Your willingness to undertake this training program

tells us that you too see this as highly important.

You may be wondering what it means to be a

“disciple” of Jesus Christ. Without becoming too

technical, it basically means that one is prepared to

follow and live out the example of Jesus Christ in

their own life. It means learning over a period of

time the “disciplines” of life that produce in you

“Christ-likeness”.

There have been many descriptions of a “disciple”

over the years, but two that I have found very

helpful are included to help you understand what

the Bible tells us a disciple is.

The marks of a disciple:

What are we aiming at when we talk about making disciples? Let

me mention a number of characteristics that I have observed over

the years. I am not claiming that this list is complete, or that every

disciple will display the full range of qualities; but at least we

should know what we are hoping and praying to achieve. Let me

put it in the form of questions that we need to ask.

1. Are you willing to serve? This was a repeated lesson that

Jesus had to teach His status-seeking disciples, especially

when He humbled them dramatically by washing their feet.

(John 13; Mark 10:35-45)

Page 8: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 4

2. Are you learning to listen? When Simon Peter was full of

bright ideas on the Mount of Transfiguration, God told him

to „listen‟ to his Son. (Luke 9:35) When Martha was

impatiently bustling around preparing a meal whilst Jesus

was talking, she was gently rebuked for not being like Mary

who was sitting quietly listening to the Master. (Luke

10:41)

3. Are you willing to learn? When Jesus spoke about his

coming sufferings and death, Peter blurted out, „God forbid,

Lord! This shall never happen to you.‟ The stinging reply

was something that Peter never forgot. (Matthew 16:22)

4. Are you willing to be corrected? How well do you receive

honest criticism, when others speak the truth in love?

(Matthew 18:15)

5. How well do you submit to those who are over you? (1

Thessalonians 5:12; Hebrews 13:17) Are you willing to do

this, even when you don‟t understand all the reasons why,

or when you don‟t naturally enjoy what you are being asked

to do?

6. Can you share your life with others, in open and honest

fellowship? (1 John 1)

7. Are you learning humility? Can you rejoice with those who

rejoice, and be genuinely glad when others are blessed in

some way or other? (Philippians 2:3)

8. Are you learning to examine your own life before criticising

others? (Matthew 7:1-5)

9. Do you know your weaknesses? Are you learning to

overcome them through the grace of God?

(2 Corinthians 12:9)

10. Are you a perfectionist? This will lead you into self-

righteousness, self-condemnation, self-pity, or a judgmental

spirit. „We all make many mistakes‟ (James 3:2; 1 John

1:8-10). Are you learning to accept yourself, as God

accepts you in Christ - just as He is?

11. Are you able to forgive? (Matthew 18:21)

Page 9: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 5

12. Have you stickability? Or do you give up easily? How do

you handle discouragements?

(Ephesians 6:10; 2 Corinthians 4:7)

13. Can you be trusted? (1 Corinthians 4:2) Are you reliable?

Will you get on with a task without constant nagging? Do

you trust others, even when they have disappointed you and

let you down?

14. Do you mind your own affairs? Or do you always want to

pry into the lives of others, becoming a busybody or even a

gossip? (John 21:21; 1 Timothy 5:13)

15. Do you do little things well? (Colossians 3:17)

16. How do you use your leisure? Do you see that all your time

is a gift of God to be used wisely? (Ephesians 5:15-17)

17. Do you aim first and foremost to please God? Or do you

seek the praise of others, or gratify your own desires?

(John 12:43; 2 Corinthians 5:9)

18. Are you quick to obey when God speaks to you? When

fisherman Peter obeyed instantly the instructions of Jesus

on the Sea of Galilee, however foolish those instructions

may have seemed to him, there were astonishing results

(Luke 5:4-9). This proved a vital lesson (which had to be

learned more than once) in the years ahead.

19. Have you faith in God, especially when there may be no

outward signs to encourage your faith? (Luke 18:1-8; Mark

11:12)

20. Where is your security? Are you willing to trust ultimately

in the love and faithfulness of God, or do you look for more

temporal and material securities first and foremost?

(Matthew 6:19-34) Are you willing to move as the Spirit

leads you on, to make adjustments and changes, or do you

resist change?

21. Have you a clear understanding of God‟s priorities for your

life? (Acts 6:2-4)

Page 10: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

A second description of a disciple:

1. Disciples are learners - open and teachable.

Proverbs 9:8-10; Matthew 4:19; John 6:60-66

2. Disciples put Christ first in all areas of their life.

Matthew 6:9-13, 24, 33; Luke 9:23;

John 13:13; 2 Corinthians 5:15

3. Disciples are committed to lives of purity and are taking

steps to separate from sin.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20; Ephesians 4:22-5:5;

Colossians 3:5-10; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-7; Titus 2:12-14

4. Disciples have a daily devotional time and are developing

in their prayer lives.

Psalm 27:4; 42:1-2; Mark 1:35; Luke 11:1-4;

1 Thessalonians 5:17-18; James 1:5-7; 5:16

5. Disciples demonstrate faithfulness and desire to learn and

apply the Word of God through hearing it preached and

taught, reading it frequently, Bible study, Scripture memory

and meditation on the Scriptures.

John 8:31; Acts 2:42; 17:11; Colossians 3:16,

2 Timothy 2:15

6. Disciples have hearts for witnessing, giving their testimony

clearly, and presenting the gospel regularly with increasing

skill.

Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8; 5:42; 14:21-23; 22:14-15;

Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; 1 Thessalonians 2:4

7. Disciples attend church regularly to worship God, to have

their spiritual needs met, and to make a contribution to the

body of believers.

Psalm 122:1; Acts 16:5; 1 Corinthians 12:12-27;

Colossians 1:15-18; Hebrews 10:25

8. Disciples fellowship regularly with other believers,

displaying love and unity.

John 17:22-26; Acts 2:44-47; 4:31-33; Ephesians 4:1-3;

Hebrews 10:24; 1 John 1:1-3

Page 11: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 7

9. Disciples demonstrate servant hearts by helping others in

practical ways.

Mark 10:42-45; Acts 6:1-4; 2 Corinthians 12:15;

Philippians 2:25-30; 1 Thessalonians 2:8-9

10. Disciples give regularly and honour God with their

finances.

Haggai 1:6-9; Malachi 3:10-11;

1 Corinthians 16:1-2; 2 Corinthians 8-9;

Philemon 14

11. Disciples demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit by attractive

relationships with Christ and their fellow persons.

Acts 16:1-2; 1 Corinthians 13:4-7;

Galatians 5:22-23; 1 Peter 2:18-23; 2 Peter 1:5-8

Page 12: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

To achieve this level

of maturity

takes commitment and time

- it doesn‟t happen overnight.

Be patient

- a disciple is a person

under reconstruction!

When a person first becomes a Christian, they need help in being

sure of their position in Christ (assurance). They also require

assistance in regularly practising the disciplines of the faith

(consistency). As they mature further, their faith becomes the

natural basis of their life (stability), so that the qualities of Jesus are

clearly evident (Christlikeness). At this point in their spiritual

development they take initiatives in reaching others for Christ

(independence) and eventually take on assisting others in their

spiritual development (reproduction).

Of course, this whole process requires a three-part process:

1. Personal 1-1 Discipleship

2. Group discipleship

3. Personal study and development.

That is why you will be encouraged to add to your 1-1 Discipleship

Program, personal assignments each week between meetings, and

involvement in a “small group” where you meet regularly with

other Christians for encouragement and growth.

FACTS, FAITH

AND FEELINGS

This old illustration demonstrates that Christian faith does not

depend upon our feelings, which are always changing, but upon the

facts of what God has done through Jesus as recorded in the Bible.

These facts never change.

Three people are walking along the top of a narrow

wall. The first person is called Facts, the second

Faith and the last, Feelings. As long as the middle

person, Faith, keeps their eyes on Facts, they can walk

securely and steadily on the wall. If Faith turns

around and looks at Feelings over their shoulder, Faith

starts to wobble and feel insecure.

So in the Christian faith, solid faith is based on the

facts of Jesus as learned in the Bible. If we go too

much by feelings, our faith will always be unsteady

and weak.

A STORY OF BLONDIN

Blondin was a famous trick-stunt high-wire artist in America.

Some years ago he stretched a wire rope across the top of Niagara

Falls and walked across it. Next he announced that he was going to

wheel a person in a wheelbarrow across the wire. A newspaper

reporter came to interview Blondin about this proposed stunt.

“Do you think I can do this great feat?” Blondin asked the reporter.

“I really believe you can”, replied the reporter. “I think you are the

greatest stunt artist of all TIME!” “You believe I can do it?” asked

Blondin, “Well then, you get in the wheelbarrow!”

There is a great difference between believing something or in

someone theoretically, and being willing to commit your life into

his or her hands by faith.

ASSIGNMENT NUMBER 1:

1. Read carefully the booklet “Knowing God

Personally”.

2. Memorise John 3:16 and 1 John 5:11-13.

Forgiveness”.

HOW TO EXPERIENCE GOD‟S LOVE AND

FORGIVENESS

1. WHAT IS THE GREATEST ADVENTURE OF LIFE?

To know Jesus Christ personally as Saviour and Lord is the

greatest privilege and adventure of life.

We can have new life in Jesus Christ -

a. An abundant (full and overflowing) life - John 10:10

b. A fruitful life - Galatians 5:22-23, John 15:8, Matthew

4:19

2. WHAT IS THE GREAT CHALLENGE OF TODAY?

The great challenge of today is for us to be part of the

solution to Malaysia‟s problems, rather than part of the

problem. How?

a. New life in Jesus Christ.

b. Imparting that life to others.

c. A life of victory even amidst problems and challenges.

3. WHAT IS THE GREAT PROBLEM IN THE WAY?

We can never live the Christian life in our own strength

because of sin. Paul identifies in Corinthians two kinds of

people

a. NATURAL PERSON (The non-Christian)

1 Corinthians 2:14 - This diagram illustrates the

relationship of the non-Christian to Christ.

b. SPIRITUAL PERSON (The Christian)

1 Corinthians 2: 15-16 - This diagram illustrates the

relationship of the Christian with Christ at NEW Birth.

Page 17: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 13

Paul goes on to say in 1 Corinthians 3:1-3; Romans 7:15-24 and

Galatians 5:16-17 that whilst our relationship with Christ is secure,

fellowship can be broken at any time by wilful disobedience.

Christians in this state are described as carnal, fleshly or self-

centred.

A CHRISTIAN A CHRISTIAN

IN FELLOWSHIP OUT OF FELLOWSHIP

Only the spiritual person lives the Christian life as it should be

lived, ie: Christ in control and empowering that life.

WHICH LIFE IS YOURS?

Page 18: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

4. WHAT IS THE GREAT SOLUTION GOD HAS

PROVIDED?

Paul discovered the solution to living the abundant Christian

life:

a. Draw on the power of Christ‟s resurrection life -

Romans 7:29.

b. Walk in the power of the Holy Spirit - trusting God

despite circumstances - Romans 8:4-5.

c. Claim God‟s solution by practising Spiritual breathing -

EXHALE - confess your sins

INHALE - claim the fullness of the Holy Spirit by faith.

What does CONFESSION mean? It means, “to agree” with God

concerning:

a. Our Sin.

b. His forgiveness.

c. Our need to repent, ie turn away from sin to God‟s way.

Our FORGIVENESS is based on Christ‟s death for our sins.

Hebrews 10:1-28

Colossians 1:13-14

a. Christ died on the cross and shed His blood for our sins.

b. As a Christian, ALL your sins have been forgiven.

c. NOTHING can be added to His sacrifice.

5. HOW CAN YOU PERSONALLY EXPERIENCE THIS

SOLUTION?

Personal application: 1 John 1:9; Psalm 103:12

In 2 Timothy 3:16 Paul said that the Scriptures are profitable for:

1. TEACHING (What to believe and do)

2. REPROOF (Recognising sin)

3. CORRECTION (How to change)

4. TRAINING (How to live)

This can be illustrated as follows:

1. Teaching shows you the path to walk on.

2. Reproof shows you where you have strayed from the path.

3. Correction shows you how to get back on the path.

4. Training in righteousness shows you how to stay on the

path.

Also consider the five fingers on your hand. You need to use all

fingers in order to grasp something firmly. If you consider each

finger as a method of studying God‟s Word the Bible, and apply all

these methods to studying His Word - you will grasp firmly its

concepts.

Little finger: Hearing - Romans 10:17

Ring finger: Reading - Revelation 1:3

Middle finger: Studying - Acts 17:11

Pointer finger: Memorise - Psalm 119:9-11

Thumb: Meditate - Psalm 1:2-3

NB. Meditation on the Scriptures is prayerful reflection with a

view to understanding and application. The goal is to

conform your life to God‟s will by prayerfully thinking how

to relate God‟s Word to yourself.

There are a number of very significant aspects of the church that

should be understood as part of your 1-1 Discipleship Program.

These are listed along with passages of Scripture you should read.

Once you have studied the passages you should discuss each with

your discipler.

1. Everyone who is part of true church is “one in Christ”

Ephesians 2:11-22.

2. There are many goals of the church including:

a. Unity - Ephesians 4:1-6

b. Maturity - Ephesians 4:7-16

c. Purity - Ephesians 4:20-32.

3. The church observes two major ordinances of:

a. “The Lord’s Supper” or Communion

- Exodus 12; Matthew 26:26-30; Mark 14:22-26;

Luke 22:17-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-29; 30-34

Here believers eat the bread (symbolising Christ‟s

broken body) and drink the grape juice (symbolising

Christ‟s blood - shed for the remission of our sins).

They look back to the cross, inward in personal

evaluation of their spiritual lives and forward

anticipating Christ‟s return.

b. Baptism - Matthew 28:19-20; Romans 6:3-4

Here believers in a public way identify with Christ in

His death, burial, and resurrection; give thanks to God

for their salvation; and give witness to their desire to

submit to the Lordship of Christ and serve Him. It is an

act of obedience to Christ‟s command.

4. Each Christian has been given a personal spiritual

motivational gift to be exercised through the gift of a

ministry upon which God will evidence gifts of

manifestations - Romans 12:1-8; 1 Peter 4:10; Ephesians

4:11; 1 Corinthians 12:27-30; 1 Corinthians 12:7-11. These

gifts are given as God decides for the good of the church

and its people - not for self-edification. The best way to

discover and refine one‟s giftedness is to SERVE! On

completion of Process 1 and 2 training you can be taken

through the S.H.A.P.E. test to clarify your gifting.

5. Every Christian is necessary and needed for the work of the

EROS means sensual desire

PHILEO used from friendship

AGAPE supernatural love revealed for us through

Christ‟s death on the cross for our sins. John

3:16

“Agape” is love because of the character of the person

loving, rather than the worthiness of the object being loved.

It is love „in spite of‟ rather than love „because of‟.

2. Agape is described in 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8.

How then can we love others unconditionally with AGAPE?

FIVE KEYS TO AGAPE - God‟s love through us.

Recognise that …

KEY 1 - GOD LOVES US

1. God unconditionally loves us - John 3:16; Romans 5:8

2. God loves us patiently - Luke 15:11-32

3. God loves us as much as He loves the Lord Jesus - John

17:23; 1 John 4:18

KEY 2 - GOD COMMANDS US TO LOVE

1. God commands us to first love Him

- Matthew 22:37

- Revelation 2: 4-5

- Revelation 3:15, 16, 19

2. God commands us to love our neighbours as ourselves

- 1 John 4:8

- 1 John 3: 17-18

- Matthew 22:39

3. God commands us to love our enemies

- Matthew 5: 43-47

KEY 3 - WE CANNOT LOVE IN OUR STRENGTH

Romans 8:8 - When Christ comes in and takes control of

our lives, He gives us the equipment to be changed people.

With the desire He also gives us the ability. He provides us

with a new kind of love.

KEY 4 - WE CAN LOVE WITH GOD’S LOVE

Romans 5:5 - His love is present through the indwelling of

His Spirit.

KEY 5 - WE LOVE BY FAITH

Hebrews 11: 1, 6 - Just as we were saved by faith and filled

Page 31: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 27

by His Spirit by faith, so we can love by faith. How?

COMMAND God commands us to love - John 15: 12, 17

PROMISE God promised to hear and answer when we

pray according to his will -

1 John 5: 14-15

Claim that love by faith right now!

Action Point 1. List the names of those you do not love (maybe even

yourself).

2. Pray for each person on the list. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill

you with Christ‟s love for that person.

3. Next meeting - reach out to them in love - by word, action,

expression. SEE GOD TAKE OVER!

4. As we learn to love people with this kind of love the Great

Commission of Matthew 28; 18-20 will become a priority

and we will want to proclaim Christ to all who will listen -

Colossians 1:28.

HOW TO BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

In our own energy we cannot live the Christian life. The secret lies

in the power of the Holy Spirit within us.

John 16:7

Acts 1:8

John 14:12-13

1. WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

2. WHY DID THE HOLY SPIRIT COME? a. To glorify Christ - John 16:14

b. To lead us into all truth - John 16:13

c. To give us the abundant life - John 7:37-39

d. To empower us to witness - Acts 1:8

3. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE FILLED WITH THE

HOLY SPIRIT? “Filled” means to be “controlled and empowered by”

a. Filled with Christ - John 15:1-8

b. Exhibit the Fruit of the Spirit - Galatians 5:22-23

c. Effective witness - Acts 1:8

d. Maturing in Christ - Colossians 3:16

Note: At any point we can take control of our lives again

and thereby limit the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

4. WHY ISN’T THE AVERAGE CHRISTIAN FILLED

WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT? a. Lack of knowledge

b. Lack of faith

c. Lack of obedience and self-denial.

5. HOW CAN ONE BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY

SPIRIT? a. By faith - trusting God. Colossians 2:6

Hebrews 11:6

b. Heart - preparation required:

Page 34: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

c. Claim the filling of the Holy Spirit by FAITH

GOD‟S COMMAND - Ephesians 5:18

GOD‟S PROMISE - 1 John 5: 14-15

ACTION POINT

Right now would be a good time for you to thank God

for His Spirit, and His presence in your life. If there

are sins that you have not confessed, confess them as

you pray now, and ask God to fill you with His Spirit.

Then, by faith, begin to live your life as a Spirit-filled

believer, as one who remains sensitive to God. And

you can watch and see how God‟s strength will enable

you to live victoriously.

Dear Father,

I need You. I acknowledge that I have been in control of my life;

and that, as a result, I have sinned against You. I thank You that

You have forgiven my sins through Christ‟s death on the cross for

me. I now invite Christ to again take control of the throne of my

life. Fill me with the Holy Spirit as you commanded me to be

filled, and as You promised in your Word that You would do if I

asked in faith. I pray this in the name of Jesus. As an expression of

my faith, I now thank You for taking control of my life and for

filling me with the Holy Spirit.

Listen to the tape “The Priority of Prayer”.

THE PRIORITY OF

PRAYER

1. PRAYER - GOD’S MYSTERY 2 Chronicles 7:14 - “If my people who are called by my

name, humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and

turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven,

will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

TWO IMPORTANT QUESTIONS:

a. What priority does God place on prayer?

b. What priority do you place on prayer?

Do you want to be a part of that team which will alter the

future of people and this nation?

PRAYER IS THE KEY

2. PRAYER - GOD’S METHOD “The church is looking for better methods

God is looking for better men.”

E.M. Bounds

In His sovereign operations in the world, God watches for

people, obedient people, through whom to accomplish His

will.

3. PRAYER - GOD’S ENTREATY Why is prayer necessary?

a. God has ordained the means by which His divine will is

accomplished in the world - prayer is one of them.

Matthew 28:19; Mark 13:10; Matthew 10:7; Mark

16:15

Notice the priority of Acts 6:4.

b. God has commanded us to pray

Luke 21:36 - John commands us to pray

1 Thessalonians 5:17 - Paul enjoined people to pray

without ceasing

1 Peter 4:7 Peter exhorts us to watch unto prayer.

Page 38: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 34

c. Prayer is the only means by which we can talk to God.

d. Prayer is also God‟s appointed method for conferring

the benefits and blessings we need - both spiritual and

temporal. Mark 9:29

4. PRAYER - GOD’S ANSWER God answers prayer: Jeremiah 33:3

Matthew 7:7-8

John 14:12-14

John 16:23-24

John 15:7

5. PRAYER - GOD’S CONTRACT

God has done His part - salvation

- gift of Holy Spirit

- joint heirs

- mind of Christ

Psalm 34:8

Malachi 3:10

John 10:10

We must do our part that must include prayer.

Read Ephesians 4:1 - 6:24.

Notice in these chapters that you are called to live a life worthy of

the calling you have received (4:1) and to grow up into Him who is

the Head, that is, Christ (4:15). You are also called to live

differently now that you are a Christian (4:17), by “putting off”

your old life (4:22), being made new in the attitude of your mind

(4:23), and “putting on” a new life of holiness in Christ (4:24) in

the power of the Holy Spirit.

It is by willing, prayerful and persistent obedience (action) to the

requirements of Scripture, that Godly patterns of behaviour are

developed as a way of life. When you are convicted by the Holy

Spirit that certain actions are wrong, you should “put off” such

actions and “put on” those actions God suggests. For example

Ephesians 4:25 says that we must “put off” lying and we must put

on “truth-telling”. This is to be done relying on God‟s power. By

doing this, change in behaviour will occur and become permanent

in your life.

Make up a chart as follows. Read the passages given and fill in the

“put offs” and “put ons”.

Listen to the tape “How to Walk in the Spirit”.

HOW TO WALK IN THE SPIRIT Review of the concept of Spiritual breathing:

1. EXHALE - confess - 1 John 1:9

2. INHALE - apply by faith the filling of the Holy Spirit

according to

Command - Ephesians 5:18

Promise - 1 John 5:14-15

As this concept of Spiritual Breathing is continually practised,

fellowship with God will become deeper and deeper and the

tendency to yield to sin will lessen. 1 John 2:1-6 explains the way

in which we can assess our lives and can walk with God.

FOUR KEY FACTORS for a successful walk in the Spirit

1. BE SURE YOU ARE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT a. Remember God‟s command Ephesians 5:18

b. Remember God‟s promise 1 John 5:14-15

c. DO NOT DEPEND ON FEELINGS.

The outward evidences of being filled with the Spirit are:

a. Demonstration of the Fruit of the Spirit

Galatians 5:22-23

b. Changed attitudes and behaviour

Ephesians 5:19-6:9

c. Increased Spiritual maturity, gained from

OBEDIENCE John 14:21

PRAYER Philippians 4:6-7

WITNESSING Colossians 1:28-29

When you cease to be filled with the Holy Spirit you:

a. Develop attitudes of unbelief

b. Go your own way Galatians 5:16-17

2. BE AWARE OF WHAT YOU CAN BE IN CHRIST a. Christ lives in you Galatians 2:20

b. You are complete in Him Colossians 2:9-10

c. Your needs are supplied Philippians 4:19

d. You are a joint heir with Christ Romans 8:17

e. You are a Son of God John 1:12

f. You can do all things Philippians 4:13

3. BE PREPARED FOR SPIRITUAL CONFLICT a. The Battle is the Lord‟s - 2 Chronicles 20:15.

b. Three forces operate against the believer

WORLD 1 John 2:15-17

FLESH Galatians 5:16-17

DEVIL 1 Peter 5:7-8

c. So be prepared Ephesians 6:10-11

4. LIVE BY FAITH a. What is faith Hebrews 11:1

b. Necessity of faith Hebrews 11:6

c. Object of our faith Romans 10:17

d. Penalty of lack of faith Hebrews 3:16-4:3

e. Thanksgiving demonstrates faith

i. Believe Romans 8:28

ii. Practice thanksgiving 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Remember: The Christian life is a battle with self. Obedience

and self-denial are often difficult and costly, even

with the Holy Spirit working in us to motivate the

changes.

Listen to the tape “How to Have Power in Prayer”.

HOW TO HAVE POWER IN PRAYER

1. THE PREVALENCE OF POWER a. We live in an age of power

where are we heading?

to whom can we turn for answers?

b. There is a need for power

the power offered by Christ but too few Christians

have claimed it

2. THE PROVISION OF POWER As Christians we clearly have the provision of God‟s power

Matthew 28:19 Power of AUTHORITY

Acts 1:8 Power of HOLY SPIRIT

3. THE PRINCIPLES FOR POWER James 5:16(b) says: “The earnest (fervent, effective) prayer

of a righteous man [person] can accomplish much.”

Principle 1: EARNESTNESS - Matthew 7:7-8

Ask and keep on asking seek and keep on seeking knock

and keep on knocking.

Principle 2: RIGHTEOUSNESS - Psalm 66:17-18;

1 John 1:9 We need to confess and repent and maintain

continuous fellowship with God to ensure righteousness.

A list of possible hindrances to prayer in this area are:

a. Sin Psalm 66:18; Isaiah 58:2

b. Unforgiving Spirit Matthew 6:14-15

c. Lack of family love 1 Peter 3:7

d. Disagreements Matthew 5:23-24

Ephesians 6:18

n. Failure to read and obey the Word

Proverbs 28:9

o. Selfishness and stinginess 1 John 3:17

Matthew 6:18

James 4:2-3

How to deal with these hindrances:

a. Let God search your heart Psalm 139:23-24

b. Confess your specific sin 1 John 1:9

c. Keep clean before God 1 John 1:7

Psalm 73:1

d. Maintain a daily Spirit-filled life Ephesians 5:18

Galatians 5:16

Daniel 10 gives further reasons why prayers are not

answered.

Principle 3: PRAY IN THE SPIRIT - Ephesians 6:18

This means that we must be controlled and empowered by

God‟s spirit for we are told in Romans 8:26-29 that without

the Holy Spirit we do not know how to pray.

4. THE PEOPLE OF POWER The people of power are those who are earnest in prayer,

righteous and who pray in the Spirit. They will maintain a

close walk with the Lord they love.

To these people are promised mercy and grace in time of

need Hebrews 4:14-16.

5. THE PRIVILEGE OF POWER Who can pray?

- those who belong to Christ John 14:6

- those who pray to God in the authority

and name of Jesus John 14:14

- those who come to God with a clean heart

Psalm 66:18

- those who have a forgiving spirit Mark 11:25

- those who pray in faith Matthew 21:22

Mark 11:24

“The one concern of the devil is to keep

Christians from praying. He fears nothing from

prayerless studies, prayerless work,

prayerless religion. He laughs at our toil,

mocks at our wisdom, BUT TREMBLES

WHEN WE PRAY.” - Samuel Chadwick

Listen to the tape “How to Know God‟s Will”.

SEVEN STEPS TO KNOWING GOD‟S WILL

STEP 1 REALISE THAT GOD DOES HAVE A WILL

FOR YOUR LIFE

a. God loves us and wants to be intimately involved

with us in living our lives

Matthew 6:26; Psalm 32:8; Proverbs 3:5-6.

b. We must be ready and willing to accept God‟s will

for our lives. Romans 12:1-2

Note: We do not have to know all the details to be

in God’s will.

Two important tests of our attitudes:

TEST 1 Are you obeying the part of God‟s will that

you already know is true?

e.g. 1 Thessalonians 5:17; John 13:34-

35; 2 Timothy 3:16-17

TEST 2 Are you willing to accept God‟s will for your

life even BEFORE you know it?

Promise John 14:21; Romans 8:32

STEP 2 REALISE THAT A LARGE PART OF GOD’S

PLAN FOR OUR LIVES IS ALREADY

REVEALED FOR US IN THE BIBLE

ASPECT 1 His will for our lives not revealed in the

Bible

ASPECT 2 His will for our lives revealed in the Bible

eg. 2 Timothy 2:3-4; Ephesians 6:1-2;

2 Corinthians 6:14-15; Matthew 28: 19-20;

1 Thessalonians 4:3

STEP 3 REALISE THAT GOD DIRECTS US TO HIS

WILL THROUGH PRAYER

This time of prayer allows God access to our thoughts and

motives

Jesus‟ example - Luke 6:12-13; Matthew 26:38-39

Early Church - Acts 13:2-3

Paul‟s advice - 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Page 52: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 48

STEP 4 REALISE THAT GOD MAY ONLY REVEAL

SOME ASPECTS OF HIS TOTAL PLAN

God only reveals part of His plan because

a. Many are not ready for all the details John 16:12

b. God wants us to trust Him Matthew 6:34

c. God wants us to focus on Him, not the plan

STEP 5 SEEK COUNSEL FROM THOSE WHO LOVE

YOU, AND WHO THEMSELVES ARE

ACTIVELY SEEKING GOD’S WILL FOR

THEIR OWN LIFE.

This benefits us by - removing impulsiveness

- giving balance

Proverbs 1:1; Proverbs 12:15; Proverbs 11:14

Do not use other‟s counsel as a crutch but rather as a

sounding board.

STEP 6 REALISE THAT GOD MAY USE

CIRCUMSTANCES TO POINT US IN THE

DIRECTION WE SHOULD GO

Paul experienced this - Romans 1:13

- 1 Corinthians 16:8-9

We must be very careful in this area that we are reading the

signs as God wants us to, and not as we desire.

STEP 7 USE COMMON SENSE AND LOGIC TO

FINALISE YOUR DECISION

When we are controlled and empowered by God‟s Holy

Spirit we can assume that our logic is worth including.

- 2 Timothy 1:7

God has given us a sound mind.

Weigh up alternatives - PROS and CONS. Ask yourself the

question - “which alternative will bring the most glory to

Jesus Christ?”

APPOINTMENT

NUMBER 9

Page 54: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 50

Include in your testimony a special verse of Scripture that is very

meaningful in relation to your conversion or spiritual experience.

Read Acts 22:1-21 and 26:1-23 for a sample Biblical testimony.

Read also the sample testimony included at the end of this

appointment.

1. Any subject matter can be presented more effectively by

careful organization. A carefully prepared testimony, given

in the power of the Holy Spirit, can be of immediate and

effective use in nearly every witnessing situation. It should

be our desire to present Christ in such a clear and attractive,

yet simple, way that those who hear will not only want to

know Him, but they will also know HOW to know Him

personally.

2. A carefully and intelligently worded three-minute testimony

will communicate far more effectively than a prolonged one

that includes a lot of extraneous material which will distract

from, rather than emphasise, the point of personal

commitment to Christ and what this can mean in a person‟s

life.

“And there I was …”

Page 55: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 51

3. Things to do:

a. Ask the Lord to give you wisdom and guidance as you

write (James 1:5-6).

b. Follow a three-point outline: “MY LIFE WITH

CHRIST”

i. BEFORE: Life before knowing Christ

ii. HOW: How you came to know Christ (be

specific)

iii. AFTER: Life after you received Christ. What

changes He has made, what He means

to you now.

c. Emphasise “after” if you became a Christian as a small

child.

d. Begin with an interesting attention-getting sentence and

close with a good conclusion. Include relevant thought-

provoking secular facts and experiences.

e. Write in such a way that others will feel associated with

you in past and present experiences.

f. Give enough detail to arouse interest.

g. Use at least one, but at the most two, Scripture verses.

h. Edit carefully and rewrite as necessary before final

draft.

i. Choose something characteristic of your experience that

is of general interest to non-Christians. Build your own

testimony around a theme, for example - success, life‟s

best, money as the answer, dreams of the future, God‟s

personal plan for me, what I want most out of life,

desire to help others, etc.

j. Emphasise the fact that the thing that made the

difference in your life was accepting Christ as Saviour

and making Him Lord and Master of your life. Keep in

mind that someone else should be able to trust the Lord

through your testimony. Tell how He entered your life.

k. Remember, the same Christ lives in you whether you

trusted Him early or later in life. Do not be concerned

that your testimony be exciting, just that it be interesting

and real.

l. Be realistic. Christ does not eliminate all the problems

of life but enables you to live them out with peace and

confidence: “I am with you always”.

m. Be positive, not negative, from start to finish.

n. Give your testimony in a group situation the same as

you would for an individual. AFTER

HOW

BEFORE

Page 56: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 52

Things NOT to do

Avoid the following when writing and giving your testimony:

1. Making statements that reflect negatively on the church and

other organisations or people.

2. Mentioning denominations, especially in a derogatory way.

3. Preaching at people. Use your natural speaking voice. This

is a testimony, not a “preachimony”.

4. Using clichés. People who work together for a period of

time on a team or have been Christians for a long time, tend

unwittingly to copy one another and use terminology not

commonly used outside of Christian circles.

5. Using too many of the same terms as others, eg.

- straight-laced, sober and sad;

- fantastic, exciting and great;

- peace, purpose and happiness;

- changed.

6. Speaking with such little volume that you cannot be heard

readily by all present.

7. Speaking in glittering generalities using words that are

meaningless to non-Christians. Terms like “salvation”,

“saved”, “born again” and “conversion” need to be defined

if used. Terms like “glorious” and “hallelujah” are so

ridiculed in some areas that you would do well not to use

them at all.

8. Using poor posture or exhibiting nervous habits (especially

with your hands).

9. Talking on the way to or from your seat.

10. Being long-winded and using unnecessary words (adhere

strictly to the time).

Page 57: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 53

HOW TO SHARE YOUR TESTIMONY

1. Share your testimony with loving enthusiasm in the power

of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).

2. Speak loudly and clearly in a natural, relaxed tone of voice.

3. Avoid mannerisms when you are speaking such as rubbing

your nose, jiggling coins in your pocket, swaying, clearing

your throat and using “uh‟s” and “ah‟s”.

4. Avoid arguing and other high-pressure methods of getting a

“decision” for Christ. Remember, people are born of the

Spirit, not through persuasiveness or logic of people,

though God may use both.

5. Smile often! Ask the Lord to give you a happy, radiant

countenance.

6. Memorise your testimony and practice it until it becomes

natural.

7. Use all or portions of your three minute testimony before,

during or after your presentation of „Knowing God

Personally‟.

The following is an example of a testimony:

I have always regarded life as something to be lived.

Much like a fun park, where every last bit of excitement

and entertainment was to be extracted - after all you

have got to get value for money. I used to go for the

fastest, the most dangerous, and most demanding rides,

in the hope that I could achieve a new high. This was my

life. It wasn‟t until I suffered several personal

disappointments and struggles, that I faced the reality of

the shallowness of my life. It was like being stuck on the

merry-go-round while others seemed to be on the roller

coaster having so much fun (so I thought) Here I was

going up and down emotionally, spinning in circles, but

going nowhere.

I had lost my job, and a special personal relationship had

abruptly come to an end. I felt empty, directionless,

frustrated and hurt.

Page 58: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 54

A guy at work, a Christian in fact, had been trying to talk

to me about my life, and the fact that God had created us

to have a personal relationship with Himself, and that this

relationship was the only way to really ultimately

experience fullness of life. Well, I had heard some of this

kind of stuff earlier in my life when I attended a Sunday

School and Youth Group - but had thrown it all aside for

more relevant and exciting things when I left school. But

now I couldn‟t get his words out of my mind. They plagued

me. As strange as it may seem, this guy got in contact

with me when he discovered I had lost my job. He came

around to my place and spent several hours listening to my

story, talking with me about his view on life. He shared

with me how we can know God through Jesus Christ, who

was sent to this world to pay the punishment of death for

people‟s disobedience in turning against God and doing

their own thing. I learned that God really loved me and

wanted the very best for me. That this love was

demonstrated in the death of Jesus Christ.

He shared with me a couple of Bible verses that talked

about a “full and overflowing life in Jesus Christ” - John

10: 10 and that if I were to “seek first God‟s Kingdom, all

other things I needed would be given to me” Matthew

6:33.

He told me that if I wanted to experience this new and

full life I would have to confess to God that I had been

going my own way, admit that this was wrong, and turn

around my life in His direction.

Finally I had to believe that this was only possible

through Jesus Christ - His life, His death on a cross, and

His being raised from the dead - all for me.

What a challenge. This was all so new to me. Well, I did

just that, and I want to tell you today that what this guy

said was totally true. It is so sad that I had to fall apart

before I would listen. It is hard to explain what

happened.

Page 59: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 55

I didn‟t have an emotional experience as some apparently

do, but I knew that I had been forgiven. I knew that I

was starting a new life. My guilt was gone and I had a new

outlook and motivation within me.

What a change has taken place in my life. It has been

some time since becoming a Christian. I have been

through some rough times, but I am growing up and

maturing. Through the help of other Christians, through

Bible study, through prayer, and through helping other

people I have found a whole new depth to living. I now

know that many people are just like I was - laughing on

the outside, but desperately empty and crying out on the

inside. I now know “Who I am?” “What I am here for?”

and “Where I am going?” There is a new level of

excitement in my life - that of becoming what God really

intended me to be. It is now my constant desire to share

what I have discovered, with others, in the hope that

they too will find real life.

Listen to the tape “How to Witness in the Spirit”.

HOW TO WITNESS IN THE SPIRIT

Two key questions:

1. What is the greatest thing that has happened to you?

2. What is the greatest thing that you can do for someone else?

Answer from Christians should be:

“To know Christ, and make Him known”

What is the problem with most Christians today?

Many think others are not interested

Many live only for themselves

Few are trained to effectively communicate their faith

(Luke 5:1-11)

THE FOLLOWING IS A SCRIPTURAL PLAN TO BECOME

“FISHERS OF MEN”

1. BE SURE YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN a. It is not good enough to be moral or religious

b. Receive Christ by faith Ephesians 2:8-9

c. Are you sure you are a Christian? Revelation 3:20

2. BE SURE THERE IS NO UNCONFESSED SIN IN

YOUR LIFE a. Sin short-circuits God‟s power Psalm 66:17-18

b. Confess immediately whenever you sin

c. Believe in God‟s forgiveness and cleansing and His

desire to forget our sin Hebrews 10:17

3. BE SURE YOU ARE FILLED WITH THE HOLY

SPIRIT Command Ephesians 5:18

Promise 1 John 5:14-15

Remember spiritual breathing?

EXHALE confess - 1 John 1:9

INHALE apply by faith

Page 62: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 58

4. BE PREPARED TO SHARE YOUR FAITH “Success in witnessing is simply sharing Christ in the

power of the Holy Spirit and leaving the results to God”

present ...

simply, sensitively, enthusiastically, focussing on Christ,

encouraging a response

5. PRAY

for divine appointments (people God has chosen)

for your prayer list - 2 Peter 3:9; 1 John 14:13

Plan to share your faith with those on the list - being always

sensitive to God‟s timetable.

6. GO TO PEOPLE a. take the initiative

b. be sensitive (never high-pressure people, but witness to

them as you are filled with the Spirit)

7. TALK ABOUT JESUS

Colossians 1:28 As you speak to other people seek the

opportunity to encourage them toward a relationship with

Jesus rather than initially to the church.

NEVER ARGUE - ENCOURAGE A RESPONSE

8. EXPECT RESULTS

Do not behave or talk negatively - see the potential in the

situation - not the problems.

PS. Go in Love!

The wheel is an illustration of the Christ-

centred, Spirit-filled Christian walking in

obedience. Christ provides POWER and

DIRECTION when there is a balanced

involvement in:

1. Prayer

2. His Holy Word

3. Christian Fellowship

4. Witnessing

As Christ takes over more and more of

one‟s life through these balanced spokes the

circumference of the wheel (one‟s life)

increases, producing greater contact with

Listen to the tape “How to Help Fulfil the Great Commission”.

HOW TO HELP FULFIL THE GREAT

COMMISSION

Signs of the times - 2 Timothy 3:1-4. Time for Christian

involvement in these last days.

THE GREAT COMMISSION

Jesus said, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on

earth. Go therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptising

them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am

with you always, even to the end of the age” Matthew 28:18-20.

Christ‟s Great Commission is the greatest PLAN ever given to

men, by the greatest PERSON who ever lived, concerning the

greatest POWER ever revealed and with the greatest PROMISE

ever recorded.

1. WHO GAVE IT? Jesus Christ gave it, accompanied by the promises of 1 John

4:4 and Matthew 16:18. It does involve ALL Christians.

2. WHAT IS THE GREAT COMMISSION? The Great Commission is a call to ACTION, not an option but

an imperative. Given in many places - Matthew 28:18-20;

Mark 16:15-16; Luke 24:46-47; John 20:21-23; Acts 1:8

Two aspects

a. Proclaim the gospel to ALL people EVERYWHERE

b. Make disciples who will in turn proclaim the Gospel - 2

Timothy 2:2

3. WHY SHOULD WE BE INVOLVED IN THE GREAT

COMMISSION? a. Christ commanded it - Matthew 28:18-20

b. People are lost without Christ - John 14:6, Acts 4:12

c. People are hungry for God

Page 66: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 62

4. WHEN WILL THE GREAT COMMISSION BE

FULFILLED? The Great Commission is to be fulfilled in each generation.

This should be our top priority, ie sharing Christ in the power

of the Holy Spirit.

5. WHERE MUST WE GO TO FULFIL THE GREAT

COMMISSION? Acts 1:8

a. Jerusalem - home

b. Judea and Samaria - surrounding area

c. Utmost part of the earth - world (by prayer/finance/going)

6. HOW CAN I HELP FULFIL THE GREAT

COMMISSION?

a. Ask God to give you a personal strategy

b. Build up personal disciples in the faith

c. Send your disciples into the world

d. Place a priority on prayer for this work

GOAL minus PLAN minus ACTION = DREAM

GOAL plus PLAN plus ACTION = REALITY

SHARING CHRIST BY

WORD AND ACTION

To successfully complete your 1-1 Discipleship Training and begin

the process of “reproduction”, you are now to minister the love of

Christ to others by word and action. Accomplish two things with

your discipler:

1. Minister to someone with a need

2. Share your faith with a non-Christian.

In order to do this you and your discipler will need to go through

and practice how to share the “Knowing God Personally” booklet

and then arrange a meeting with a non-Christian in order to share

your faith (including your testimony). In addition, you will need to

contact the Pastor of Pastoral Care to gain information as to needs

in the fellowship or local community so as to assist in meeting

those needs. You may even in this area have the opportunity to

share your testimony or “Knowing God Personally”. BE

PREPARED!!!

Work through the following material with your discipler:

AN OVERVIEW

OF THE EVANGELISM PROCESS

(See chart 1)

The evangelism process is essentially in three phases.

1. CULTIVATION (preparing the soil)

Here we work at meeting people‟s needs, building

relationships, earning the right to be heard, entering

people‟s lives through loving caring service. This phase

challenges the heart or emotions.

2. SOWING (planting the seed)

Here we share the reason behind our loving, caring concern

- that is the reality of Christ in our lives. We tell people of

our personal testimony and how they can know God

personally through Jesus Christ. This phase challenges the

mind or intellect.

APPOINTMENT

NUMBER 11

SPECIAL

ASSIGNMENT

Page 68: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 64

3. HARVESTING (picking the crop)

Here we encourage (gently and sensitively) people to

receive Christ into their lives and so enter a new

relationship with God. This phase challenges the will or

volition.

We must remember that while we are working at caring for people

and sharing our faith, God is providing the platform on which our

efforts will ultimately make sense. Through His Spirit He is

revealing to people the fact that a personal, all-powerful, intelligent

God is behind all we see (Romans 1:18-32). He is convicting

people of sin, righteousness and judgment. He brings people to

salvation and even causes their growth.

We should remember that people have different levels of

understanding of spiritual matters and so we must be sensitive to

meet them where they are and not make assumptions.

Chart 1

Page 69: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 65

When you discern (through observation and the leading of God‟s

Spirit) that a person is ready to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ,

begin to share the “Knowing God Personally” booklet.

HOW TO SHARE

THE KNOWING GOD PERSONALLY

BOOKLET

Always spend time asking questions of the people to be shared

with, that allow you to know about them, enter their lives, show

that you care and are interested. Be aware that you will experience

both psychological and spiritual opposition to sharing your faith.

In faith, trust God and rely on His power to overcome this

opposition. The Booklet “Knowing God Personally” is written to

overcome much of the pressure you will experience in sharing your

faith. Your major initial task is to turn the general conversation to

Christ. Think up ways in which you could introduce Christ into the

conversation and then how you could invite people to go through

the booklet with you.

Some guidelines for sharing:

1. Always be sensitive to the person, and reliant on the Holy

Spirit‟s leading.

2. Read the booklet with the person- aloud, clearly, and slowly

- but not mechanically.

3. Remember you are not sharing principles but Christ.

4. If real questions arise - answer them briefly. If “red herring”

questions arise - defer answering until after the presentation

by saying, “that‟s a good question, can I talk about that after

we have read this booklet?”

5. If the person doesn‟t seem to be responding ask: “Is this

making sense to you?”

6. Hold the booklet where it can be seen clearly. Use a pen to

focus attention on key points.

7. If sharing in a group, give booklets to each person.

8. If only one person in a group is interested, share privately.

Page 70: 1-1 Discipleship Manual 2001 Version

Kenmore Baptist Church 1-1 Discipleship Program Page 66

9. When you come to the prayer and the person wants to pray,

make sure they understand what they are doing and allow

them to decide how this is to be done.

10. If a person does not pray to receive Christ, assure them of

your availability for further counsel.

11. If interruptions occur, remain cool, relaxed and calm. It‟s no

big deal - God is still in control. If you relax the other

person will also. After the interruption is through, go back

and review the points covered, then continue. If it is

inappropriate to continue, you could arrange another

meeting, or leave the booklet.

12. Make sure you carefully explain what a decision to come

under the Lordship of Christ really means. Share with the

person Luke 14:25-33. Once having explained this passage,

ask the person any of the following questions: “What do

you think it means to receive Jesus Christ as Lord?” “What

do you think it means to become a Christian?”

13. If the person is positive but hesitant, ask them “What one

thing would prevent you giving your life to Christ right

now?” Share with them.

ALWAYS BRING PEOPLE BACK

TO THE MAIN ISSUE

OF SAYING „YES‟ OR „NO‟

TO CHRIST.

In order to handle the possible responses to the questions posed on

pages 12-13 of the booklet refer to Chart 2.

As you practice handling the various types of people and their

responses, also practice giving all or part of your testimony with

your presentation of Knowing God Personally.

ACTION: Now go with your discipler and share your

faith.

REMEMBER: Success in witnessing is simply sharing your

faith in the power of the Holy Spirit, leaving

the results to God.

HOW TO SHARE CHRIST

BY YOUR ACTIONS

Finally, both you and your discipler should arrange with the Pastor

of Pastoral Care for an assignment to assist in a practical way

someone in need. Both of you should complete the task and if

possible spend some time sharing with the person concerned on a

social and spiritual level.

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AS YOU

MINISTER TO THOSE IN NEED!!!

ASSIGNMENT 11

1. Read through very carefully and memorise as much as

possible the booklet “Knowing God Personally”, in

preparation for your witnessing experience.

2. Go and share your faith with a non-Christian using the

KGP booklet.

3. Go and complete your caring ministry assignment as

proposed by the Pastor of Pastoral Care.

Now that you have completed the 1-1 Discipleship Program, you

must take special care not to fall away from your commitment to

Jesus Christ. You need to continually present yourself to God as a

living sacrifice that is a measure of your worship (Romans 12:1-2).

The following page is provided as a checkout sheet on the state of

your Christian discipleship. You should aim to complete this sheet

once each month to see what growth has taken place. Take the

time this week to assess your growth and thank God for what He

has been doing and is going to do in the days ahead.
