By264B.C.,theRomanshadconqueredsomeGreekcity-statesinsouthernItaly.ThisbroughtthemintocontactwiththecityofCarthage.CarthagecontrolledmostofNorthandWestAfrica,mostofwhatispresent-daySpain,andsomeislandsoffthecoastofItaly.CarthagealsoruledthewesternhalfofSicily(sis-uh-lee).ThisislandwasatthetoeoftheItalianpeninsula,or“boot.”TheRomansfeltthreatenedbytheCarthaginians(car-thuh-jin-ee-uhns)becauseofhowmuchtheircivilizationwasexpanding.The First Punic War In264B.C.,theRomansandCarthaginiansbeganaseriesofwars.TheFirstPunicWarlastedfor23years.ItwasthefirstofthreewarsthatbecameknownasthePunicWars(pew-nick).ThisfirstwarwasfoughtovertheislandofSicily–Carthageruledthewesternhalfofthisisland.RomefeltCarthagewasthreateningandtooclosetoRome’scivilization.Carthage’smilitarystrengthwasinitsnavy–boatsandsoldiersthatfoughtonwater.Rome’sstrengthwasinitsarmy.TheRomansbeganwithnonavysoitwasdifficulttodefeattheCarthaginianswhowereskilledatfightingviathewater.TheRomansbuilttheirfirstfleet(groupofboats)tofighttheCarthaginians.TheRomansmodeledtheirboatsafterCarthage’swarships.TheRomansknewtheycouldnotout-sailtheCarthaginians,buttheystronglybelievedtheycouldoutfightthem.Theyaddedacorvustotheship–whichisamovablebridgeatthefrontoftheship.Thecorvusallowedthesoldierstoboardtheenemy’sshipfasterandfightinhand-to-handcombat.TheRomanslostmanyshipsandmeninstormsduringtheFirstPunicWar.Intheend,after23yearsoffightingthefirstwar,theRomansdefeatedtheCarthaginians.Soin241B.C.,theCarthaginiansagreedtomakepeaceandleftSicily.
The Second Punic War & Hannibal In218B.C.,theSecondPunicWarbegan.Atthattime,theCarthaginians,whowereledbyGeneralHannibalBarca,attackedtheRomanarmybylandfromnorthofItaly.HannibalwasseenasthebesthopeCarthagehadtodefeatRomeandheisrememberedasoneofthebestgeneralsinancienthistory.HannibalhelpedhistroopsleadasurpriseattackontheRomansbymarchingfromSpainthroughGaulandthencrossingtheAlpsintoItaly.Hannibal’sarmyusedelephantsandhadtoguidethemacrossthesnowyAlpstohelpbreakthroughtheRomanarmylines.
Winningcontinuousvictories,Hannibal’sarmyfoughtitswaytothegatesofthecityofRome.WhenCarthage’sarmygottoRomeitdidnothavetheheavyequipmentneededtobatterdownthecity’swalls.ItcouldnotgetmoresupplieseitherbecausetheRomannavycontrolledtheseas.UnabletocapturethecityofRome,HannibalandhisarmyhadtoroamthecountrysideofItaly,attackingvarioustownsanddestroyingcrops.Theydidthisfor15years!TheRomanstookadvantageofthis–whileHannibalwasintheItaliancountryside,theRomanarmyandnavyattackedthecityofCarthage.HannibalwassentmessagestoreturnhomebecauseoftheRomans’attack.HannibalfacedtheskilledRomangeneralScipioAfricanus.ThisiswhenHanniballosthisfirstbattle–andthewar.TheSecondPunicWarendedin201B.C.CarthageagreedtopayRomeahugesumofmoneyandtogiveupitsterritoriesthatwerenotinNorthAfrica.ThisincludedSpain.Spainhadmanyvaluableresources,suchascopper,gold,lead,andiron…theseallbelongedtotheRomansnow!Third Punic War FollowingtheSecondPunicWar,therewasatimeofpeaceforabout50years.Then,Carthagebegantoshowsignsofregainingpower.Topreventthis,theRomansattackedin149B.C.ThisbegantheThirdPunicWar.Bythistime,HannibalwasnolongerthegeneralofCarthage’sarmy.RomewasabletoeasilyovertakeCarthage.TheyburnedeverybuildinginCarthageandspreadsaltintoitsfieldssothatnothingcouldgrow.TheykilledtheCarthaginiancitizensorsoldthemintoslavery.TheThirdPunicWarendedin146B.C.
