Kidnap dramaWhat was supposed to be a well-de-served maternity leave for a well-known Malamulele traffi c offi cer has turned into a nightmare after she was arrested for kidnapping.

Glory Masingita Chavani (45), who is stationed at the Malamulele traffi c station, had booked maternity leave that was to end in January next year. What nobody knew was that she had allegedly faked the pregnancy, while planning to steal the child of a relative.

Last Thursday she had allegedly phoned the young Hlulani Maswan-ganyi (17), a relative with a month-old baby, Timothy Mbavala, and

requested her to come to Masingita Chavani‘s home at Xikundu in Mal-amulele.

Since that time, Maswanganyi has been missing and her baby was found with the traffi c offi cer on Monday. It is also alleged that a getaway car was taken from its owner in Thohoyan-dou, under the pretext that it was to be prayed for as it was cursed. The rumour doing the rounds in the area is that Masingita Chavani has a new lover and that the new lover wanted a child and, out of desperation, she faked a pregnancy.

Ms Bertha Khosa, elder sister of Hlulani Maswanganyi’s mother, said

that the traffi c offi cer was arrested because the family was aware of her closeness to Hlulani. “On the day Hlulani went mis-sing, the offi cer phoned her at home and asked her to come there. She also told Hlulani not to tell anyone that she was going with her to fetch nappies she had bought for her baby.”

Hlulani, however, told family members she was going to Masingita Chavani, who had phoned her, said Khosa.

She also said Hlulani later sent a Whats-app message to her mother-in-law that she had been kidnapped and was passing through Halahala and M’tititi and that the vehicle she was in was being driven by people smoking dagga. “But when we

later phoned her, we did not receive any answer.”

Masingita Chavani appeared in the Malamulele Magistrate’s Courts on Wednesday.

The appearance took place after it was alleged that a 22-year-old man had confessed to killing Hlulani and that her body had been dumped somewhere in the vicinity of the Nan-doni Dam. The police took most of the day to comb the area for the body.

Murder confession, but still no grave Man arrested following death of his wife

Vho-Dzhafurou Tshindane laid to rest

Traffic cop in court for kidnappingFrom Page 1Casually dressed, Masingita

Chavani first entered the dock, but her case was adjourned for almost an hour after it was put to the court that her legal represen-tative was not yet present. When it resumed after lunch, the legal representative was not there and magistrate Cedric Baloyi post-poned the matter to 14 October for further investigations.

Outside the court, hundreds of people from Xikundu Village in Malamulele demanded that no bail should be granted to her after she was charged with two

counts of kidnapping and one of child stealing. The police had their hands full, trying to con-trol the crowds who braved the scorching heat to have a glimpse of the suspect.

Only a limited number of protesters were allowed in court and the rest had to wait at the local police station. Community members, mostly women from Xikundu, toyi-toyied and waved placards with messages on and sang anti-Masingita songs out-side the court. The protesters made it clear that she should not be granted bail as she was not fit

to stay with people.Mr Moses Maluleke, a civic

leader at Xikundu, said their being at court was a sign that the community was angry. “We felt that we should come here to show our unhappiness with what hap-pened as the community is angry about what happened,” he said.

Limpopo Police spokesperson Col Ronel Otto confirmed that the baby had been found and was safe, but that the baby’s mother had not yet been found and that investigations were continuing. She could not confirm the alleged murder of the child’s mother.

Thousands of mourners gathered at the Israel Apostolic Church in Zion at Lutomboni to pay their last respects to the late gogo Vho-Dzhafu-rou Naledzani Sophy Tshindane.

Born from a royal family at Thononda village 84 years ago, gogo Tshindane married the late bishop Musimunwe Manzhi Tshindane in the early fifties. Together they founded the Israel Apostolic Church in Zion. The two went through the ranks of the church until gogo Tshindane became a “Dzhafu-rou”, the highest female rank within the church.

She led the congregation for years while her hus-band moved throughout the country, setting up new congregations. She continued to lead the church after her husband passed on until her only son, Elijah Tshindane, was ordained as the new bishop seven years ago. She succumbed to a long illness on Friday, 25 September. She is survived by three children, bishop Elijah Tshinda and two daughters, 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

During her funeral, everyone described her as a peace-loving person and an excellent motivational speaker.

A 34-year-old resident of Gogobole, Abraham Siphungu, appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Monday in connection with the death of his wife, Nomsa (37). She was allegedly hacked to death with a sharp objedct at Mphaila last Friday.

Siloam SAPS spokesperson W/O Edward Thara-ga confirmed the incident and said the suspect had accused the victim of having an affair with another man. It is alleged that he then produced a sharp object and started hacking her indiscriminately. The deceased sustained serious head injuries and her left hand was totally cut off. Her right hand was also broken and she had multiple wounds in the face and on her head. “She died at the scene,” Tharaga said

“It seems that the accused had dragged the deceased out of the house and pulled her along the grass to throw her down in the bush to conceal the evidence,” said Tharaga. He said that Siphugu had allegedly confessed to killing Nomsa in her house last Friday night. Her blood-soaked clothes were found in the room which he had shared with the deceased.

He confirmed that a case of murder was opened against Siphugu, following his arrest. “He appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s court on Monday and he will appear again on the 26th,” he said. “Bail was not granted.”

The deceased’s sister and the four children she had left behind are traumatised, following the senseless killing of their loved one. “I feel distraught,” said the deceased’s eldest sister, Ms Bridget Manemu. The family went along with the community members who had brought the news, to see for themselves what had happened.

She said that the way the woman had died had affected the whole family. “We are worried and still traumatised about the incident. We were greatly saddened about her death,” she said. She added that her sister had been healthy. “I was with her last Wednesday, the day before she was found dead. It really pains me a lot,” said Manemu.

The chairperson of the Munna Nndinyi men’s organisation, Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, said

“that the horrible incident is very painful. People should break the silence and share their problems with either close family members or community leaders. We also advise those with family problems to contact us as we have highly trained nurses, psychologists and social workers. It is important to seek professional assistance rather than resorting to violent actions like ending the lives of poor, innocent children,” said Mufunwaini.

A spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku Police had confirmed that before last Friday’s events, the accused was on the run after he had allegedly participated in a housebreaking at Tshilwavhusiku, theft of a motor vehicle as well as poaching and housebreaking in the Makhado area.

Murder suspect Abraham Siphugu (34).

A front-end loader was used to search for the body when it became clear that there were rocks in the area.

Still missing since January 2013: Mr Matodzi Johannes Denga.

The missing man’s granddaughter, Joyce Mahandana-Mabetoe, who says they were hopeful that they would finally find closure in the matter.

For almost three years now, the Denga family of Tshitavha-Vhulaudzi has endured the pain of not knowing where their beloved grandfa-ther, Mr Johannes Matodzi Denga (88), is. He went missing on 2 January 2013, after telling his relatives that he was going to collect his grant at Louis Trichardt.

He never came back. At first his family thought he might have gone to his relatives at Madombid-zha, but their hopes were dashed when they could not trace him there. They searched everywhere, with no luck, but at the weekend their hopes of finding his remains were raised when a local man confessed to having witnessed his murder at a

nearby mountain at Phadzima. To verify his claim, the man also pointed out

the grave where the old man was supposed to be buried. The allegations were reported to the local traditional leader, other structures in the village and the police, who unanimously agreed to exhume the body.

After the alleged pointing out of the grave on Sunday, the police and some members of the com-munity guarded the area for the whole night, until the digging commenced the following morning. Different units of the police, emergency services and forensics braved the scorching summer heat for almost a whole day, with community members assisting the police in searching for the body.

Meanwhile, thousands of community members from all around the neighbouring villages came to the scene to witness the exhumation of the body. When it became evident that the area was full of big rocks, a front-end loader was roped in and it dug everywhere, without success. The community and the police, with the family members, went back home disappointed after a hard day’s search.

The missing man’s grandchild, Joyce Mahan-dana-Mabetoe, said the family was elated when they heard of the confession.

“We have endured a lot of pain as a family, to such an extent that two members of the family have passed on after suffering illnesses as a result of his disappearance.”

His wife, Alosia Pontso Denga (78), passed away in February 2013 after complaining about the loss of her husband, and his daugher, Celestina Denga (45), died in May 2015 after complaining about her missing father for a long time.

“We have suffered and we felt that we would find closure in the matter even if it meant finding his bones. At least we would have had the chance to give him a decent funeral. Now that his grave has not been found, we will continue to hope that the truth will come out one day and we can find closure and move on with our lives,” she said.

The spokesperson for the Vhulaudzi Crisis Management, Mr Albert Mafhara, said there were as many as 10 unresolved murders and missing persons in the area. “After the confession, we have high hopes that some of the killings will be resolved and the perpetrators brought to book.”

He express his disappoinment that nothing was found after the confession, “but this does not mean we are giving up our fight to get the truth and find killers of our people,” he said.

Siloam police spokesperson W/O Edzisani Tharaga said a man had confessed to having witnessed the secret burial of the old man. “The man, who is no longer a resident of the area, confessed and pointed out a spot in the bushes and we, together with other structures, decided to search for the body. We are also disappointed that no grave was found, but we are grateful for the support the community has given in trying to solve the mystery,” he said.

The principal of Progressive Prima-ry School in Thohoyandou Block F, Ms Ann Landsberg, urged commu-nities, irrespective of their colour, race and creed, to treat each other’s culture with respect. She spoke during her school’s recent Heritage Day celebrations.

Progressive Primary is typical of the Rainbow nation, with almost all the cultures represented. During the celebrations, pupils showcased their different cultural dances and different cultural foods.

Landsberg said they found the day very important in that it reminded the young ones of where they came from. “We are a mixed cultural school and we do not want the children to forget

their roots and shy away from their cultures. Some of them do not even know the rich cultural foods that are there and some think cultural dances are barbaric. We are hereby remind-ing them that it is important to know who they are, in order for them to know where they are going as future leaders of this country.”

Young Grade 6 pupil Elelwani Mulate (12) of Thohoyandou Block F said the day meant a lot to her. “I was born in the township where most of the traditional things are not done. This day helped open my eyes as I now know which type of food our forefathers ate and the dances that we are supposed to dance, which have to do with our culture. We are just happy that all cultures are respected here at our school and we enjoyed it a lot.”

Ms Ann Landsberg, principal of Progressive Primary School, drinks traditional mageu during the heritage celebrations. The pupils also tasted traditional dishes during the event.

Area reaps fruit from computer training

Well-known Agape choir to perform

Ms Johanna Neluheni and some of the pupils work on the comupters.

Communities around Vuvha, Mapate and Muledzhi villages outside Mutale are starting to reap the fruits of the donation of computers and laptops con-nected to Internet to the nearby Nyadzani Secondary School.

Some of the community mem-bers who didnt know how to operate a computer are now able to type and look for information in the Internet, thanks to the pro-vincial department of education,

who donated 21 computers and 20 laptops some two years ago.

One of the community mem-bers who is benefiting from the deal, Mr Idani Nemukula, said life had changed for the better for him and other unemployed people because they were able to search for the jobs they wanted and also to apply online. “We used to pay a lot of money to Internet cafés when using their facilities. We thank the man-

agement of Nyadzani School for allowing the nearby communities to come and use the computers,” said Nemukula.

The act ing pr incipal of Nyadzani Secondary, Ms Johan-na Neluheni, said that they also benefited a lot from the comput-ers. “We used to struggle to get information for school projects, but the computers give the pupils access to a whole world of infor-mation,” she added.

The Agapé Christian Centre in Louis Trichardt once again offers residents the unique opportunity to come and listen to their well-known African Choir.

They will give their “One tribe under Heaven” performance on 26 and 27 November from 18:00. It is an exciting, fun show for the

whole family.“Come and experience music,

dancing and all-round fun,” in-vites the church.

This year, Afrikaans, English, Venda and other African lan-guages will be included in the performance, with improved seating and wonderful prizes to be won.

However, please note that limited seats are available, so residents must buy tickets as soon as possible.

Tickets cost R50 per person, R30 for children under 12, and are available at the church in Munnik Street. Alternatively, phone the church office at 015 516 3725.

Information needed

Help the police to trace these peopleThe Vuwani police are appeal-ing to community members who might have information about the disappearance of Takalani Tambani (17) of Dzwerani Ha-Madala.

She disappeared from her home on the morning of 1 Sep-tember this year and has not been seen since. She was last

seen wearing black-and-white leggings and a blue vest.

In an unrelated matter, the police at Vuwani are also look-ing for the 13-year-old Rofhiwa Mutshena of Ha-Masia Tshik-warani. She went missing on 12 August while going to school and did not come back home and has not been seen since then.

She was last seen wearing a school uniform which is com-prised of a black skirt, black jersey, white shirt and black shoes. Those who might have seen the two or have information about their whereabouts can phone Const Annikie Ntsundeni Mungadi at 072 282 5542 or 015 961 7000.

Villagers ululated and sang praises when the mayor of Musina, Cllr Mihloti Ramoya-da, told them that the newly acquired grader which cost R4,3 million would start fixing their roads in two days’ time.

“As I’m speaking now, the grader has already arrived at Malale’s municipal offices. We know that most of the roads here in Malale, Madimbo, Tanda, Tshikhudini and Domboni need to be fixed.

That is why we made sure that we bought this grader to assist you in this regard.”

Ramoyada was addressing hundreds of villagers who filled the big tent to capacity during the Batho Pele Campaign that was held at Malale Sports Centre. She also used the platform to remind villagers of the successful ser-

vice delivery initiatives that the municipality had implemented in their area.

During the campaign, gov-ernment, municipal and offi-cials from the private sector provided services for the local communities who usually travel to town to access those services.Ramoyada said it was import-ant to restore the dignity of all South Africans after 21 years of democracy. “Everyone has the right to access government ser-vices, despite their geographical location. Community members should report if government and municipal officials are not treat-ing them with dignity. That is why we encourage employees to have identification cards, so that community members are able to identify them. We are compelled to abide by Batho Pele principles

whenever we serve our people. We will ensure that public ser-vants are appropriately skilled to render services to citizens, with speed and at a lower cost.”

She said all government of-ficials and councillors should always adhere to Batho Pele principles of consultation, setting service standards, increasing access, ensuring courtesy, pro-viding information, openness and transparency, redress, and value for money.

“In addition to the Batho Pele principles, we are implementing campaigns that include instilling an ethos of public service aimed at inculcating a new culture of responsiveness, dedication and patriotic commitment in the minds of public servants as part of a strategy of building a public service cadre,” she said.

“Adv Thuli is our last hope” - protestors Police and family in row over service

The message is clear: people have had enough of corruption.

demands and a sign that you have heard the loud and resounding voices of the people,” she said.

Receiving the mem-orandum, Vhembe Executive Mayor Cllr Tshitereke Matibe said they would look into the memorandum and if some of the de-mands were beyond their competence, they would hand over the memorandum to the relevant authorities.

Civil society structures under the Vhembe Civil Society Network have spoken in one voice against corruption in the public and private sector taking place in the region.

During a march to highlight their plight, which started at the local Thohoyandou Town Hall and ended up at the Vhembe District Municipality’s offi ces, where they handed over a memorandum to the Vhembe mayor, the marchers made it clear they have had enough. They said the only person who could help them rid the country of the scourge was the Public Protector, Adv Thuli Madonsela.

They urged the government to respect her offi ce and to make her fi ndings and recommen-dations on issues of corruption binding. “We also urge the government to increase the budget for her offi ce as it is dealing with a lot of work that needs more human resource power. We say again to the powers that be that public contempt for and vilifi cation of the public protector must be subject to crimi- nal prosecution,” said Ms Nkhumise- ni Tshivhase, the leader of the many organizations that took part in the march.

The more than

1000 marches, who sang freedom songs and waved placards with anti-corruption messages, said the district was a disgrace and was one of the leading areas in terms of corruption. The marchers deliberately included the general population as being part of the corruption challenge and two of the banners read “pay the FINE, not the COP” and “grants are for children, not hairstyles.”

Tshivhase said corruption had done more harm than good “in a society where the health care and education have deteriorated to almost noth-ing, while the money is being stolen by greedy offi cials. Many are living in shacks, whereas the money to build them RDP houses goes to the pockets of individuals,” she added.

She further indicated that the physical security of the community was also at risk, because of the corruption taking place because of the police service that is riddled with corruption.

An ugly row is brewing between the Thohoy-andou police and a family in Thohoyandou Block F.

This follows a shooting incident a fortnight ago, which left the family’s house sprayed with bullets by unknown assailants. The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday, 26 September, and has left the family traumatised as they do not know who the assailants are and the motive behind the shooting.

Four bullet holes are still visible in the wall of the house, but what is worrying the family most is the fact that the police do not seem interested in the case as they have done nothing about it in all this time. According to the family, seven days after the incident no case had been opened and nothing has been done at the incident scene.

Ms Tshinakaho Tshisikule said they were fast asleep at around 01:00 in the morning when they heard gunshots. “We woke up and saw police at the entrance of our yard and it seemed as if they were looking for some evidence on the lawn outside the yard. We saw them picking up something, which we believe were spent cartridges of a gun. They just asked us what we had heard and told us they had heard gunshots, which were fi red at our house.”

She added that they were very surprised as to how the police came to know that the shots had been fi red at their house, “but they told us to go back to the house without telling us what was happening”. She said that she picked up a bullet next to a window and took it to the police in the morning, but the police did not even bother about it and just said they would follow it up.

“What made me more confused is that they did not even bother asking my name and particulars or contact numbers,” she said.

Tshisikule further said she felt very badly treated. She said that she had not attended school, but knew that a crime scene should be cordoned off for the police to gather evidence, which was not done there. “I also think they were supposed to guard the scene, so that no one could tamper with it, but that also was not done.”

She said that she tried to open a case, “but did not get any help and up until now, no one seems to bother about our safety.” She stated that they no longer felt safe as “those who are supposed to safeguard us are no longer doing their job and we are at the mercy of criminals.”

The granny’s daughter, Ms Elisa Tshisikule (21), a student at Univen, said it was hard for the family to sleep peacefully and for her to study at night. “We do not know the reason for the shooting and whether they will come back. We just hope the police will do their work and speedily bring the suspects to book before anyone is hurt,” she said.

Thohoyandou police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo said the family was free to see senior police offi cers if they felt that they were not satisfi ed with the service they got from the offi cers on duty. “The police have an open-door policy as police and the family could see all senior offi cials at the station, including the station commissioner, if they feel they were not properly treated,” he said.

The music fraternity resonated with songs after the release of two albums from two dif-ferent singers who only happened to share the recording studio.

The 18-year-old singer Ndivhudzannyi ‘Makhadzi’ Ralivhona, who has created a per-sona for herself, launched her 14-track album, Yo Shoma, a fortnight ago. It comprises songs such as Thoho yanga iya rema, Volume, Khosi a hu dzheni inwe, I didn’t know, and Ni nga si tsha muwana.

“I have worked hard on this new album, you know, as I am not one to disappoint my fans,” she said. “I have learnt that self-respect and respect for other people is paramount if you want to see success in the music industry.”

She indicated that it was the fi rst time that she had released an album with more than 10 songs. She features some hip hop, and Afro-pop beat fusion on this album. In the song Ndo malwa kule, she dreams about getting married in far-away countries and not within South Africa. “Listen to the song and draw your own conclusion,” she smiled. “In Ndo malwa kule, I am also trying to demonstrate that even people who come from outside South Africa are still people like us.” In another song, Mukula, she pays tribute to the school from which she had matriculated. The

school is Mukula Integrated School. She is currently studying for a public relations

qualifi cation.Makhadzi’s manager, Rita Dee, said that they

had worked very hard on the album and it was doing well commercially. “I can confi dently an-nounce that as the youth, we have taken over the reigns of the music industry. No one is going to play us tricky games for what we have sweated day and night for.”

Racha Kill released his long-awaited al-bum, Ndivho na Vhutali, on the same day that Makhadzi’s album was launched. “I am glad that

people fi nd my work enjoyable,” he said. “There comes a time in life that you understand that the work you cook in the confi nes of a recording studio needs to be taken out to people. And

this is exactly what we have done with my album. Now it’s for people to

decide...” He said that he believed

that without ndivho na vhutali (knowledge and wisdom) people got lost. “We all need a certain measure of wisdom and a cer-

tain amount of knowledge to achieve some of our dreams,” he asserted. Racha Kill has featured other VenRap artists such as Ramzeey, Mizo Phyll, Shin-tilizer, Makhadzi, and Blazer and Crazy Frazer. The album

boasts 15 amazing tracks, such as Inner views, Kule, If I die young,

Xenophobia, Magaraba and O themba.

“We are happy to be involved in xigubu, because it keeps us busy and away from the violent world of drug abuse and crime.”

Those were the words of one youth, Caiphus Maswanganyi, who is a member of Xigubu xa ka Maphophe, at Maphophe village near Punda Ma-ria. Xigubu is a xiTsonga traditional dance troupe, where participants wear special animal attire, beat animal-skin drums, sing and dance in unison.

“Loko u cina xigubu, wa rivala hi swilo hink-waswo u kuma ku tsaka (When you dance xigubu you forget about all other things and feel very joyful),” said Caiphus, who joined Xigubu xa ka Maphophe during its formation some eight years ago.

The brains behind Xigubu xa ka Maphophe, the 45-year-old Mr Mahowa Mabale, said that he had decided to start the xigubu and turn it into a youth-platform initiative after he realised that most youths remained idle during after-school hours. “I wanted to keep them busy with a positive activity, and one that will keep them together and busy while they remain within the village and within reach when their parents need them,” he

said. “And since I had loved and danced xigubu from an early age, I brought together some youths and trained them. They are excellent now.”

Mabale said that they performed at weddings, churches and other related events for a nominal fee. “We are able to raise some money through our performances. We use that very money to get some school uniforms for the needy children in the village. At the end of the day we are left with nothing in our treasury. However, we are happy that we are doing something good and positive in helping build up our community.”

However, Xigubu xa ka Maphophe, which boasts nearly 30 youths from both primary and secondary school levels, still faces financial challenges. “We need attire, drums and transport for all our members,” Maphophe said. “But a lack of such necessities won’t pull us down - we will keep on giving our clients quality performances.”

At the end of each year, Xigubu xa ka Mapho-phe invites the parents of all the members and the local chief for a free performance and feast. “To us it is only small way of saying thank you to our chief and parents,” he said.

Those interested in Xigubu xa ka Maphophe can contact Maphophe at 083 751 5519.

Soccer guru Ndoda buried at Kutama

New book for former school headmaster

Soccer lovers from around Vhembe are still shocked, fol-lowing the recent sudden death of well-known soccer guru Ndoda Ungedzani Muvhango (51) of Kutama. Muvhango died after a short illness about a fortnight ago.

During his heydays, he played for teams such as Kutama Young Stars. He also trained the Kutama team in the nineties. He later became involved in the devel-opment of young soccer players.

Ndoda worked at the Zoutpans-berg Football Association until the soccer association merged, following the municipal demarca-tion. He was also a referee in the

A former school principal, Mr Maano Ramad-wa, says that teaching is a profession which needs those involved in it to have a sense of inspiration. Teachers need to inspire learners to perform and produce better results.

This fine mentor and motivational speaker has recently published a book, titled Teach To Inspire. “The book, which comprises 12 chapters, deals with various methods teachers can use in order to bring inspiration to their classrooms,” he said.

Ramadwa appreciates the roles played by teachers who taught him at Sinthumule Secondary School, where he matriculated. “The influence these teachers had on me had inspired me to take up teaching as a profession,” he said.

His 17 years in the profession are chronologically detailed in the first chapter, as well as the lessons acquired throughout the journey. The subsequent

in great pain after losing one of their beloved members. “We are greatly saddened by his death, but we will have to accept it, because God’s will has been done. May his soul rest in peace.” He said the family was proud to have pro-duced “one of the most valuable members of the community.”

Maliaga said that Ndoda had played a big role in uplifting the standard of soccer and education in the local community.

The president of Makhado LFA, Mr Joseph Maphaha, de-scribed Ndoda as a community builder and educator “who was larger than life. He was always there when we needed him. Now

that he is gone, we are afraid that no one will ever fill his shoes because he is irreplaceable.”

The president of Safa Vhem-be, Mr George Kubayi, said the football family had lost one of its pillars, someone who had always been working hard towards the development of the soccer.

“The whole region was shocked when we heard of his untimely death. We have been with him for many years. We used to visit him even during his last days and he could not stop talking about soccer.”

He is survived by his wife, two children, brothers and parents. He was buried at Kutama.

Safa Vodacom league, now known as the ABC Motsepe league. In this capacity he also served as referee selector of the Safa Vhembe MMK Administrator stream E and F.

At the time of his death, he was doing duty as the chairperson of the referees for the Makhado Local Foot-ball Association. He was a teacher at the Tshiungulela Secondary school, but resigned in January this year.

A family member, Mr Peter Maliaga, said the family members were

Family members surround the tombstone Ndoda Muvhango after the funeral.

The saying that goes “do good and good will follow you” became a reality for a retiring rural school principal, when communities, learners and teachers bade him farewell.

Mr John Takalani (65), former principal of Nyadzani Secondary School outside Mutale, was recently honoured, when he bade farewell to the teaching profession after teaching for almost 41 years. “When I started teaching in 1974, the profession was characterized by commitment, respect, discipline and loyalty among teachers and their pupils. It is not like some learners of today, who come to school drunk and armed with knives, showing no respect to teachers and unwillingness to learn,” he said.

He added that he wanted to leave a legacy of team work and hard work among scholars and teachers. According to him, the sky is the limit for a pupil who takes education seriously and is prepared to work hard.

“When I was appointed principal of Nyadzani in 1990, there were only 33 pupils in Grade 8, while learning and teaching were conducted un-der trees. I still remember when the communities around Vuvha, Mapate and Muledzhi clubbed together and collected some funds, which enabled us to build three classrooms,” he said.

chapters give advice on how the teachers can in-fluence their learners.

Ramadwa’s professional journey has taken him to four high schools in the Johannesburg North district. He has worked in various capacities, as head of department, deputy principal and principal. He is a former Blue Eagle High School principal.

Ramadwa was born in Musina and raised at Muduluni village in the Kutama area. He qualified as teacher at the former Makhado College of Edu-cation after matriculating at the age of 23.

In 2014, he resigned from his post to be a moti-vational speaker. He is also an entrepreneur who established his own company, called Divhambele Training Solutions (Pty) Ltd. His company fo-cuses on, among other things, teacher and learner motivation, mentoring and coaching of school management teams.

Maano Ramadwa resigned from his post as a school principal to become a motivational speaker.

The acting principal of Nyadzani Secondary, Ms Johanna Neluheni, presents a gift to Mr John Takalani.

He mentioned that he was leaving a school with 328 pupils and last year’s matric pass rate had improved to 86%. “We hope that we can reach a 100% this year,” he said.

The traditional leader of Muledzhi village, Headman Nthambeleni Nethengwe, said the retiring of a dedicated principal like Takalani left the community and pupils without guidance, because he was a hardworking educator who had steered development since being appointed to lead the school.

The love for radio started from a very young age for PhalaPh-ala FM’s DJ Shandu. She loved listening to the radio and liked the beautiful voices of different presenters and their guests.

“It was so fascinating because you feel that you are with a lot of other people around you,” said Shandu. “If you listen to the radio, you surely know that you are not alone – loneliness is a stranger who will not encroach your private space.”

This affectionate radio presenter was born Shandukani Vele Lukh-wareni at Dzimauli in the mid-1980’s. She is currently co-hosting the afternoon drive show, Dzia Orowa, on Phalaphala FM.

She started her schooling at Tshikevha Christian School, where her love for radio began. She was inspired by her then best friend, Phathutshedzo “DJ Spice” Mbodi, who used to work at the local radio station, Univen Radio.

“I vowed to one day follow her dream to be behind the microphone and was patient until I matriculat-ed,” she said.

Her dream was realized when she went for au-ditions in 2005 at

Univen Radio and was selected to present the afternoon drive show, which she did for almost two years.

In 2007, she joined PhalaPhala FM as a weekend graveyard show presenter which, at the time, was between 00:00 to 05:00. “I have been presenting the weekend par-ty-time show, Dikita, which is on Friday and Saturday night between 21:00 -00:00, which is an upbeat music show,” she said.

DJ Shandu is one radio presenter who does not see radio as the end of it all. She is a dedicated student who hardly rests on her laurels. She holds a BA Communication Science degree from the University of South Africa. She also holds a diploma in sales and marketing, certifi cates in public relations, cus-tomer relations management and in strategic management, all from the University of South Africa.

“I am busy with an honours in marketing,” she said.

When she is off radio and not busy with her school work, she reads inspirational books. “I need to confess that I am an addict for

good inspirational books,” she said.

Musina’s religious leaders discuss issues with mayor

“Make a meaningful contribution”

Ideas on how churches can contribute to the implementation of efficient service delivery were at the top of the agenda when the mayor of Musina, Cllr Mihloti Ramoyada, recently met pastors from different denominations at Musina Municipality’s council chambers.

Approximately 50 pastors from church-

Members of the congregation of the Mvudi Reformed Church in Thohoyandou were told that inas-much as they should reflect back the good that the Lord has done for them and to thank Him, they should also continue making a meaningful contribution in their communities.

Speaking during the church’s five-year anniversary celebrations in Thohoyandou recently, renowned ac-ademic Prof Christopher Rabali of the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North West University said what the church had achieved in the five years was not man-made but due to the grace of God. He said that the church still had a big role to play in the community and that this role could be achieved if they worked with other churches and role players.

“The programmes you have initi-ated here should impact positively on the community in our day-to-day politics, education and economy as God expects you to do so. Plan for-ward beyond the next five years; let the church grow and take its rightful

place in the community,” he added.Chief Ratshinyiwaho Themeli, a

member of the congregation, com-mended the church for the role they are playing in communities. “Your presence in communities makes our task easier. When people follow God’s law, there is peace in the land, but we also need prayers as rulers to lead God’s people in a just way,” he said.

On behalf of the church, Rev Simon Muhali said they had reason to celebrate. “We wanted to thank God for the good he has done for us. We could not just move forward as if nothing had happened.” He men-tioned that when the congregation started in 2010, the members set targets and that they had managed to achieve most of them. “...we managed to reach out and started churches and also managed to complete church buildings in those areas. We managed to build a church office which pro-duced a book, among other achieve-ments, and in the five years we have seen God’s grace and glory,” he said.

es around Musina lis-tened attentively when Ramoyada urged them to continue support-ing the municipality to bring a better life to all citizens. The session, which started with a prayer, nearly turned into a marathon sermon as pastor after pastor quoted scripture read-ings which support that government leadership has been delegated by God to lead community members.

Ramoyada said local pastors had always been available in municipal events throughout. “We would like to acknowl-edge your support in all our initiatives. That is

why we decided to have this special day to thank you. Through your prayers, the municipality has achieved a lot, and we have no doubt that you will continue to support us in our future endeavors.”

Pastor Jeremiah Negogogo of the Revelation Apostolic Church of Africa said during the event that as community

servants they always made sure that they were available for the activities of the municipality. “It is our obligation to make sure that we help our municipality to serve people with distinction. The Pastors Fo-rum here in Musina is serving as a good platform for us to discuss service delivery issues with the municipality.”

Good relationship between Musina and Chief

Finalists will be selected to par-ticipate in the showcase event on Saturday, 10 October, where they will perform one last time before the overall winners will be named.

The young new traditional leader of the Ram-buda kingdom, Chief Avhatendi Rambuda, commended Musina Municipality for having a good working relationship with civic structures, including traditional leaders. This was during Mayor Mihloti Ramoyada’s visit to Dzimauli to pay homage to the new chief.

Chief Rambuda stated that when his father, Chief Muthuhathonwi Rambuda, passed away two years ago, the fi rst delegation to offer condolences was from Musina. “The municipality also played a vital role to make sure that my father received a dignifi ed burial. It is only three weeks since I have been installed as chief and the people from Musina Municipality are the fi rst to come here and pay homage to my chieftancy. I’m really impressed by the leadership of this municipality. This is what we call consultative governance.”

The chief, who obtained a Diploma in Civil Engineering at Tshwane University of Technol-ogy and graduated with a BSc in Geology and Environmental Management from the University of Johannesburg, is currently studying towards an LLB degree at the University of Venda.

Rambuda said the time for municipalities to

operate without consultating traditional leaders should be a thing of the past. “Traditional leaders own the land and municipalities bring development. It is very important for these two institutions to complement each other when it comes to service delivery. We are satisfi ed with the way Musina Municipality is accelerating service delivery to our villages, although we acknowledge that much is still to be done.”

Mayor Ramoyada gave a brief service delivery report on the villages under Rambuda Traditional Council that form part of Musina Municipality. The villages are Madimbo, Malale, Tanda, Tshikhudini and Domboni. “It was important for me to come personally and show respect to him, because we need to work together to deliver quality services to our people. The Mu-sina Traditional Lead-ers Forum, which we recently launched, will serve as a good platform to discuss service-deliv-ery-related issues.”

“A healthy mind always performs better”

Young Chiefs win the MTG/PIB League

“As a security cluster, our work is very stressful. You cannot achieve what you want to achieve if you are not fit enough.”

Those were the words of Mr Takalani Masham-ba, the area management commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services in Thohoy-andou. He was speaking during the annual sports day that was held at Makhado Correctional Centre. Mashamba encouraged everyone who participated in the activities of the day.

The event also attracted officials from Kutama Sinthumule Correctional Centre and the South Afri-ca National Defence Force (SANDF) to participate actively. “We believe that a healthy body produces a healthy mind and a healthy mind produces a healthy performance,” said special programmes manager Mr Lloyd Magau.

The officials participated in a fun walk, aerobics, river bank, tug-of-war and soccer. In the soccer competition, the SANDF beat Thohoyandou Cor-rectional Centre 1-0. “It was a tough game, but we managed to win,” said Thomas Kgabo, captain of the SANDF’s team.

The winners in the fun walk were awarded medals, sponsored by Hyundai Louis Trichardt.

“You are a winner even though you did not win a medal,” said Sekopelo Ndou, head of the Makhado Correctional Centre. “Sports help to build relation-ships among DCS officials and the officials from our sister departments. The Department of Correc-tional Services has the responsibility to ensure that the officials’ well-being is taken care of.”

According to the communications intern, Thom-pho Nesane, the sports day had come after a clear consideration of the nature of the work executed by correctional officials on a daily basis. “Though our main mandate as a department is to rehabilitate offenders, it is crucial as a department to encour-age our officials to participate in these types of

activities because a healthy mind performs better,” Nesane said.

The final match of the MTG and PIB compe-tition between Muduluni Young Chiefs and Magau United ended in goalless draw. The winner was determined by penalty shoot-out and Muduluni Young Chiefs won the event 5-4.

The match was played at the Ravele grounds.Chiefs was the superior side from the onset as

far as possession of the ball was concerned. They put a lot of pressure on the defence of United for the better part of the match, and the first half was characterised by dangerous play from United’s players.

In an attempt to calm the situation, the referee flashed several yellow cards in quick succession and booked players for applying dirty tricks and dangerous play.

In the second stan-za, United put more pressure on their op-ponents. The absence of many players in the United defence was felt from the on-set. Rofhiwa Kha-dammbi of Chiefs could not make the grade as the oppo-nents used him as their freeway.

Magau’s central back, Mushe Mpilo and Shonisani Ma-

humela, were reprimanded with cards for rough tackling and wasting time respectively. Chiefs introduced Rolivhuwa Kutama and Zwanga Matumba for Rofhiwa Khadammbi and Benedict Ramokgobedi respectively, but this did not have any influence on the outcome of the match.

The draw was a fair result for the evenly contest-ed match. The winners went home with a trophy, a cash prize of R2 000 and new soccer kit. Magau received R1 000 and new soccer kit.

During the prize giving are, from left to right, Messrs Joseph Maphaha (Makhado LFA president), Shudu Magwabeni (manager of MTG), Fhedzisani Gogo (captain of Young Chiefs), Chippa Mathelemusa and Kwaito Mamafha.

Tshakhuma RO United finished the Amos Shield Soccer Tournament in the third position after beating FC KK 3-2 in their losers’ final match at the Levubu Laerskool sports fields on Saturday. The goals for RO were scored by Rinae Madzhuta (2) and Rendani Mukomafhedzi, while Tshifhiwa “Long Tom” Ndou and Lufuno Ramathuthu scored for KK. Tshakhuma Na Ndilani the Amos Charity champs

Action from the fi nal: Vutomi Mahlaule of Maweja controls the ball while Ndivhuwo Mukwevho of TNN pulls him back.

Nndwamato Miriri of TNN (right) and Khumbudzo Muvhango of Maweja wrestle to win the ball.

The most disciplined player in the tournament, Mashudu Makhari of Maweja, receives his award from Mr Mulalo Thabela.

The captain of TNN, Nndwamato Miriri (second from right), receives his team’s trophy from Ms Mulalo Thabela (left), while Ms Julia Thabela (right) and Ms Rudzani Thabela look on.

The best goalkeeper of the tournament, Fhulufhelo Nemusumani of TNN, receives his award from Ms Rudzani Thabela.

Tshakhuma Na Ndilani FC (TNN) won the Amos Charity Shield, when they beat Maweja Takers 3-2 in the fi nal at the sports fi elds of Levubu Laerskool last Saturday.

TNN made their intentions clear from the onset. Their fast forwards, Ndamulelo Mukwevho, Thabiso Lekgau and Kha-thutshelo Mudau, forced the defence of Maweja to play with their backs against the wall for the better part of the fi rst half. TNN opened their account in the 14th minute when Khathutshelo “Adibayo” Mudau beat the offside trap and scored with a half volley.

Maweja then replaced their centre back, Vutomi Mahlaule, with Walter Netshimb-ulu. TNN responded by introducing Rofhi-wa “Danger” Netshiungani at the expense of Eric Matlou. Netshiungani formed a deadly combination with Rolivhuwa Muk-wevho in the middle of the park.

Takers scored in the 29th minute when Takalani Mashila blasted in a rocket, following a square pass from Khumbudzo Muvhango. Thabiso Lekgau of TNN handled the ball intentionally two minutes later and he was lucky to go away with a yellow card.

TNN effected another change to their starting line-up. They replaced Ndivhuwo Mukwevho with Oscar Ntshauba in the 54th minute and about six minutes later, Gift Nemutandani scored the second goal for TNN with a volley. Maweja lost shape in the middle of the park soon afterwards.

TNN capitalized to score the third in the 69th minute, when Khathutshelo Mudau hit the back of the net after a breakdown in communication between the keeper of Maweja and his defenders.

Maweja replaced Zwivhuya Tshisa-phungo with Takalani Ramagalela later in the game. They pulled one back in the 84th minute via Walter Net-shiumbulu, who scored with a header.

TNN received R10 000, a fl oating trophy, soccer kit and gold med-als during a ceremo-ny held at the stadium shortly after the final. Maweja Takers took home a cash prize of

R6 000 and silver medals. The third prize of R3 500 and bronze medals went to Tshakhuma RO United, while FC KK, who obtained the fourth position, received R1 000. Tshakhuma RO United beat FC KK 3-2 in their losers’ fi nal match earlier that day.

In the fi nal of the U/13 category earlier that day, TNN Academy beat Shooting Stars 1-0 and took home a cash prize of R3 500 and a fl oating trophy.

The U/13 individual awards were presented to Maboho Nevari (player of tournament), Rambu Rambau (top goal scorer), Thabo Munyai (most disciplined player), Smile Mabadzhabadzha (best goalkeeper) and Maboho Nevari (man of

the match). The individual awards for the se-

nior category were presented to Walter Mphigalale (top goal scorer), Zwivhuya Tshisaphungo (player of the tournament), Fhatuwani Nemusumani (best keeper), Mashudu Mukhari (most disciplined player) and Mr Mashudu Ndou (coach of the tournament.

During the ceremony, a representative from the sponsors, Mr Mulalo Thabela, revealed that his family will continue to sponsor the tournament in the coming years and that the sponsorship amount will increase with time. This year’s tournament was sponsored to the tune of R70 000.

Family day withSt Marks Anglicans

Sports and cultureon Heritage Day

The St Mark’s Anglican Church, situated at 128 Munnik Street, will be hosting a family day on Saturday, 31 October. There will be a jumping castle for the children, boerewors rolls, cool drinks, chicken curry and rice, braaivleis and a tea garden for those who wish to relax a bit.

“For the tired mom who wants to take a break from the kitchen, encourage dad to come and sup-port this event,” invite the organisers of the event.

The fun will start at 09:00.

The people of the Sinthumule and Kutama area celebrated the recent Heritage Day through sports, indigenous games and athletics. The events took place at the Mabaleng sports field at Tshiozwi village.

The event was organised and hosted by the com-munity-building organisation Mamu Community Sports Development.

The activities of the day attracted a lot of guests and residents who came in their numbers to either support or participate in the event. “The purpose of hosting an event of this nature is to instil knowledge of heritage and culture in the minds and hearts of all people,” said the general secretary and public relations officer, Mr Jafter Mamugudubi. “We are happy to report that we were able to realise our dream of hosting a successful event which not only benefited the youth, but also the community at large.”

A soccer team from Madombidzha, Western Stars, won a floating trophy in soccer, after beating Makhitha iya Runga FC 5-4 on penalties. The score was 0-0 after regulation time.

The Limpopo mobile manager of Hollywood, Mukhethwa Nyase, said that they were pleased to note that there were community members who still celebrated their heritage through arts and culture. “We witnessed youngsters dancing, reciting poetry and being involved in many sporting activities,” he said. “We feel very happy to support initiatives like this one. We are willing to do our best to plough back into our communities.”

Vho-Tshinakaho Vho-Nwamavhandu Mphaphu-li, a representative of the Tshiozwi Phalamennde Choir malende group, said that she wished the event could be held every year, so that they could continue with it. “We love ourselves, and as we love ourselves, so do we love our culture,” she said. “We enjoyed the day’s activities.”

The event was organised by Mamu, with finan-cial assistance from sponsors Premjee & Son Cash and Carry, PostNET Makhado, KFC, NTK Louis Trichardt, CaterPack, Hyundai Louis Trichardt, In-spectarCar Louis Trichardt, Talisman Hire, Lixton business and Coca-Cola.

As part of community support, KFC handed over some tokens of support and acknowledgement to participants. Pictured are (from left to right) Shonisani Siliga (KFC), Vho-Tshinakaho Vho-Nwamavhandu Mphaphuli, Vho-Maria Tshidada, and Livhuwani Nedzamba (KFC manager).

am busy with, there is no way an opponent can beat me,” he said.

“I work very hard in the gym and my trainers are doing a tremendous job to help me make my dream of becoming the world champion to come true,” said Thagamega.

He has won 11 fights and lost 2 profession-al fights. His trainer, Harold Volbrecht, did not mince his words when he praised his charge. “This boy will go places. He is dedi-cated to his trade, and I see a lot of potential in him. He is the one of young boxer in my stable and I see a bright future ahead for him.”

V o l b r e c h t s a i d there was no doubt that Thagamega would become a world cham-pion one day as he was talented and a hard worker.

A local boxer and former Musangwe star, Nyelisani Thagamega(26) of Luheni, was by far too strong for his opponent in a tourna-ment at Emperor’s Place on Sunday evening. He won his fight by a technical knockout.

Thagamega blasted Collin Tloubatla in the first round of their junior flyweight bout. He approached the fight aggressively, throwing killer punches from all angles. That resulted in Tloubatla’s falling down in the first round. Tlou-batla, however, indicated that he was prepared to continue after the referee had counted to eight.

The fight came to a halt for a few seconds a bit later to allow Tloubatla to recover after his claim that he had been hit below the belt. Although the fight was scheduled over six rounds, the referee

stopped the fight, to save Tloubatla from serious injuries.

The tournament was hosted by Golden Gloves Promotions.

Thagamega, who aims to become the WBC champion, believes that he will still get the opportunity to reach his goal. He started boxing in 2011 and turned professional a year later. He said during those days that turning professional was extremely difficult, considering the testing procedure.

Thagamega said he would use the next fight, which will take place on 6 November, as a spring-board to a South African elimination title fight. “I am ready. I am physically and emotionally fit, and with the support coupled with the training that I

The much-talked-about NFD Limpopo derby between the current log leaders, Baroka FC, and Black Leopards at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium ended in a goalless draw on Saturday.

The game was a balanced affair in the fi rst 15 minutes, but Baroka created more scoring opportunities. Leopards started to demonstrate their rough skills, but the referee, Mr Victor Hlungwani, calmed the situation by reprimanding Thivhavhudzi Ndou with a yellow card. This came after Ndou had brutally tackled Thabiso Kutu-mela from behind.

The keeper of Leopards, Avhashoni Tshinuna, made his presence felt in the

26th minute. Baroka were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Olaleng Shaku unleashed from the set piece and Tshinuna executed a brilliant save.

Leopards’ Marks Munyai was lucky to get away with a yellow card. He handled the ball intentionally, but the referee felt for him as he only fl ashed yellow. Everyone thought he would be taking an early shower.

Both sides effected some changes to their starting line-up in the last half. Leopard brought on Thembisani Nelu-vhada, Meshack Maphangule and Ivan Mahangwahaya, who replaced Ndamulelo Mugadi, Bongani Manana and Katlego Molomo respectively.

Their introduction didn’t change the

fl ow of the match.Baroka called on Donald Mokondelela

and Loyisa Simandla.Baroka enjoyed ball possession

throughout the last half, but they were unfortunate.

Marks Munyai of Leopard brought down Lucky Mothwa inside the penalty area and the referee didn’t hesitate to point to the white spot. Their top goal scorer, Thabiso Kutumela, took the kick from the spot and the keeper of Leopards Avhashoni Tshinuna saved the penalty.

Leopards’ captain, Siphelele Ntshan-gase, and their top goal scorer,Thembisani Neluvhada, didn’t perform well as they were tightly marked by Albert Muthupa and Theriso Maphetho.
